World Ten Ball updates

Hey Jay, I just wanted to tell you about the tapped tables. The referees (no offense intended) do not know how to rack the balls on those tables. If you move all ten balls up at once (or 15) in a triangle form with your hands or a rack up to the spot and release them they will all roll together as a unit and freeze up. Maybe you can try it on one of the tables, you will see what I'm talking about.

They've been using them for nine ball where it is harder to use that technique, so they do it one ball at a time, which is inferior. By letting all the balls rock at the same time the entire rack will settle at once to get a better rack if the table is tapped correctly.

You can always tell how tight the rack was by how much the ten ball moves. I saw one almost shoot in the corner, but all others I've seen stayed in the rack area. When they are perfect it will not move at all.

Too bad you can't get the feed for the filipno TV commentary. Jerry Forsyth is working with two local guys (Bob Guerrero and Biboy Moriano). They are head and shoulders above the two guys commentating from Singapore of all places. Yes, you heard me right, that ESPN commentary is being done by two guys watching the matches on monitors hundreds of miles away in a studio.

Jerry and his second are right here in the arena. They all know their stuff!

Hey Jay, Just want to say thanks for the updates. We really appreciate them. And I love the stories

I DID do this on day one, showing one of the officials how it "could" be done easier. He was "told" not to do it this way. After that I was done making suggestions. The scheduling is also weird, with one round scheduled today and THREE tomorrow. Why, I don't know. Should be two rounds each day. I did mention this inconsistency to a few people. We'll see what happens.

Lots of talk of Shane in this event (for good reason). Just wanted to send out a huge congratulations to one of those other 2 americans, Shaun Wilkie. Not well known but playing well. He gets to match up with Shane in the next round. They last played in Valley Forge earlier this year with a couple of competitive matches. Shaun won the hot seat but Shane came back to take the title in the final. I'm guessing that Shane will remember that and come out firing on all cylinders. We'll see if Shaun can "get some"!

Shaun was the 2007 Tiger Pool Tour player of the year and now he's in the final 32 World 10 ball open! See tour results and lots of pictures here: http://www.planet-pool.com/showplayer.php?451

Andy

Nice plug for the tour, Andy ;-)

Shaun has been playing great lately. I was really impressed with him at Turning Stone. He's always been a great player but I think he's really starting to build some confidence in these bigger events. I love that him and Shane are playing against each other next round (except for the fact that it means one of the Americans has to be eliminated). But I'm a little bias and am going to say Shane will win this one. He is constantly evaluating what he's doing right and what he's doing wrong in his matches. Believe it or not, no matter how well he played, he leaves each match with something to work on before the next match...it's insane what a perfectionist he is. Too bad we can't watch this match-up live :(

Shane plays at 3PM here. That's 6AM PST, 9AM EST.
Isn't it 3pm in Manila is 12 midnight PST?

What's happened? Why did Jeremy Jones, Charlie Bryant, Glen Atwell not go to the WTBC?

Jay... thanks for keeping up. Hope your girl is well.
Mike has been so busy he has not called much. I do know that they had major internet issues the first couple of days. That has been corrected.
The pictures coming in from "all over" are great. Still, I feel like I am witnessing this event in slow-motion. I wish Mike & Jerry were doing video this year but it was not in the cards.
BTW ...Mike's news update on the main homepage.... the story of Shane V. is amazing. I have read a lot of what Mike writes and this story just gave me goose-bumps. It was written with heart.

Check back with you later. Thanks again. Go Shane!

1 a.m. in GA is 1 p.m. in Manilia... :)

All true here. Coming from the USA, you need minimum four days advance time to adjust. We learned this from Rempe years ago. He was the first to say go four days early to Asia, but only two days early to Europe is sufficient.

When I go hunting in Africa its a 36 hour trip from start to finish(air, lay-overs, driving) one time it was over 40 hours. Anyways its 10 hours ahead of California-its not just the time change the whole sense of being is off. When your hunting its dangerous not to be tip top, you can get killed. It takes me 4-7 days to be 100%, I have been there lots of times and its usually a week to be right. When Lewis fought Rockman in Joberg SA a few years ago Rockman the dog went over there 2 weeks earily and won when Lewis who arrived the day before walked into a punch, I have done dumb things myself. It takes a while to get right.

When these guys are going to play for BIG $$$$ they are just irresponsible not to go earily, lie they have better things to do, they have action there, its not like its down time. They desreve to get beat by the guys who are prepaired.

Good grief!

Anybody watching the Jericho Banares/Dodong Alwi game? Jericho can flat out shoot!
First time I've seen him in action, he's shooting lights out and he definitely loves the
draw or shall I say, the screw shot for the others who's on the other side of the pond!

Here's the Last 16 match-ups that will start any minute now...

Shane Van Boening vs. Wu Chia Ching

Mark Gray vs. Mika Immonen

Liu Haitao vs. Ralf Souquet

Demosthenes Pulpul vs. Yang Ching-Shun

Fu Che-Wei vs. Charlie Williams

Marlon Manalo vs. Niels Feijen

Nick Van Den Berg vs. Jericho Banares

Darren Appleton vs. the winner of the Satoshi Kawabata/Hayato Hijikata match

I wonder how would Efren, Busti, Alex, Alcano, Gomez and Dennis Orcullo would have fared in this stage of the tournament?

And you can sense their bias against other players too. How I wish they can show the matches with only the sounds from the crowd and the balls. I would take Bob Guerrero over them anytime.

I noticed that eversince those two started commentating on pool matches. seems there isn't any change as to their pool knowledge.

those two are merely watching and say when the players made or miss a shot. neither one made a real analysis to the pool matches. I dunno, but seems to me that ESPN is just wasting their money on people who can't do the job.

I wonder what will happen to Philippine pool if no filipino in the final 8.

It wouldn't matter or should I say, it won't count. Did you see how sparse the crowd was even though a Filipino was playing?

why is it not on espn?????? anyone watching it?

It WAS on ESPN Asia for 4 hours, 3-7 pm Manila time, 3-7 am Eastern, or 12 midnight to 4 am Pacific...
