World's Worst Pool Room

Here in Metairie, LA, (the suburbs of New Orleans), I have to feign having a good time once more.

Tonight is the weekly handicapped 9 ball tournament which is open to the world. We have many top players who come to Buffalo Billiards and some of them apparently stay for very long periods of time.

As if my burden isn't bad enough, I dropped by today just to see who was swinging a cue in the middle of the day. I only stopped by for a short while and it was painful to see all of the day crowd happily playing pool. One of the day people wailed at me from across the room, just as I was leaving, "Hey Joey, Buff's got the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship PPV on".

Now I've got to watch the best players in the world playing on the television while I keep hitting the balls into the rail. Apparently, the owner isn't satisfied with having some of the largest crowds every Tuesday night with the tournament and so we will continue to suffer watching these champions night after night.

Tonight I will be made to suffer three matches:

7:00pm EDT - Verjil Bedwin vs. Petri Makkonen

9:00pm EDT - Oliver Ortmann vs. Jim Udischas

11:00pm EDT - Phil Burford vs. Nick Malaj

Oh, what's that? Phil Burford at 11:00 pm.....Now, I'll be losing even more sleep. Sheesh! What's a guy supposed to do?

I sure hope they don't delay the games and keep me late tonight. Oh, woe is me.... Now, all I have to do is win the FREE weekly, handicapped 9 ball tournament filled with 64 of the best and not so best players in our area. I knew I should have taken a nap. (I wonder if they will be serving free food tonight). (I feel like I have been gaining weight lately)

If the wife and I decided to move down there to LA I think she would leave me within a week....two tops. I guess the next best thing is reading about the "worst" pool halls on here.

Oh, she doesn't know it yet but our next vacation will be to LA. She's been wanting to go and now I have my reason. She will find out where we are going when I pull up in the parking lot. She can't say no then.

You have it rough my friend. I might journey down there and share the burden with you sometime. It's the least I can do.

It's all good. The big boys were there tonight, Wiseman, Walden, Lunda, Conway Jr, and a few others. No one was betting anything so a few of us started playing Captain 9 ball for $20 a set. Came out one set on top and paid the time and bought a drink for us.

Come pass a good time.

At least your indoors...here's a picture of where I shoot.

Blue Hut on the right's a public toilet, I'm serious.
The only upside is the lights turned on at night no matter if anyone's playing so we get to practice for free with ample lighting.
They're open 24/7, 24hrs a day at a flat rate. Half price when it rains.

Jive,
That is an awesome picture. I didn't know such places existed. I guess you learn how to deal with humidity.

Hey Joey,

I actually just took those pictures last night...I was having dinner out in the city and decided to take a stroll around the lake after dinner. Outdoor pool is pretty common sighting in this part of China but I was more amused with the single spotlight illumination and how its located right next to the public toilet.

Many years ago I played in a hall in town (1 hour south of Chicago) that had no heat in the winter. The owner would run a kerosene torpedo heater before it opened and then again late at night when the place closed and only we regulars stayed with the door locked. Some guys even wore gloves it was so cold. Yeah the heater was illegal but it was all he could afford. I remember staying late playing poker on the back tables. "Last hand" we'd yell as the torpedo began sputtering as it ran out of fuel.

There have been other threads on this topic with some great stories.
Try a search under "worst pool halls".

Now that's a pool room with "real" pool players.

We don't really get much snow in this part of China, I'd say 1-2inches top and it melts in a day or two.

Honestly this is already one of the better outdoor pool area, I've seen worst. I'll snap somemore when I head out to town next time.
