Worst rule I've ever heard of

So I'm playing in this last pocket tournament and both my opponent and I are on the hill. I call a bank shot that is very hard and make it but before the 8ball goes in the pocket I called the cueball hits his last ball in the corner pocket. They tell me I lost the rack and match because my opponents ball went in before the 8ball even though I made the 8ball where I called it and it went clean.

The tournament is at a Caribbean club in the middle of the ghetto and I don't really know anyone there so even though I wanted to get into a yelling match I just packed up my cues and left.

Has anyone ever heard of this retarded rule before? Is it a thing in last pocket?

They most likely knew you wouldn't argue since you were the new guy in a bad area and suckered you

No I trust the guy I was playing I've known him for a while and it was definitely a rule unless the whole bar was in on it.

Well then I'd have to agree that is the worst rule I've heard of and 2nd place isn't even in the same galaxy

well when u make his last ball (say the 8 missed) now you have denied him the opportunity to make his last ball in the pocket he wanted and then make the 8 there. Did you think he would have had to make the 8 in the pocket YOU made his last ball in?.

I hate any kind of 8 ball and never once saw or played LP 8 Ball so im just guessing why the rule might make some sense.

It doesn't matter in which sequence you make the balls in 8 ball.
You can pocket the ball of your opponent first and then your ball to the called pocket. Or the other way round. It was a legal shot and you continue.
I do this regularly to clear obstructing balls.

Why there should be another rule on the 8 - I don't think so.
You opponent can now call the 8 in any pocket he likes.

Check WPA rules, too - and don't go to strange places ;-)

Cheers,
M

Well, how about this one (from an actual league I play in with around 1500 players total):

- If you have ball in hand it is illegal to place the cueball where it is touching a rail.

Or, from the same league, please note this is an 8-ball league where it is legal to play
rail first onto any ball (doesn't have to be from your group) can be the 8 aswell.

- If you play the cueball rail first into an objectball that is touching a rail and that ball is
from your own group (say solids) then it is a legal shot, nothing else has to happen.
But if it's a ball from your opponents group then you have to hit another rail after hitting the objectball.

Both of these make 0 sense to me.

This was a LAST POCKET 8 ball tournament and i can see some sense to the rule.

many worse 8 Ball rules such as not having to hit the 8 Ball as long as you go 3 rails

I'm glad you posted this, NS.
I was ready to make an indignant post about @&$%# bar rules.
Your posts made me stop and think a bit harder.

I assumed that if you missed the 8 and made his last ball, his pocket was established.
...but then I pictured being corner-hooked on the 8 (8 is locked in the jaws) and your opponent's ball locked in a pocket you can see....if I make his ball instead of kicking at the 8, I would become an automatic winner....which is very wrong.

...my conclusion....it's a good rule.

Hey Z,

Pretty bad! How about this one? Your opponent scratches or fouls. You have cue ball in hand. You put it down to study the rack. You pick it up and your opponent calls a foul. You had to shoot your shot from where you put the cue ball down. That is the dumbest ever!!!!

No the rule was if you make your opponents last ball he can call any pocket as his last pocket. The rule I am upset about is the one that says I lost because the 8ball went in AFTER his ball.

house rules, well they rule. now you know. it is one of the worst rule i've ever heard.
the way you handled yourself was impressive though, and because of that you rule!

Had somebody the other day tell me(same thing) you should have to shoot from where you set the ball down. Looked at him like he had three heads, then said, Um........No.
Where does this crap come from?

They also play scratches behind the line and dont spot a ball - so you get punished instead of the scratcher, wtf?

One of the dumbest rules I've ever heard of is if you're on the 8 ball and it's behind the headstring and your opponent scratches then you have to kick up table and back down table to try and hit the 8 ball.

With this rule your opponent gets reward mightily for intentionally scratching.

Actually, this rule also is used in the league I mentioned a few posts back. There are 2 types of fouls there:

- Hitting a ball legally and scratching > Ball-in-hand behind the headstring
- All other fouls like not hitting a rail > Ball-in-hand anywhere

It's a fun league but the rules and their impact on strategy do take some getting used to.

You're playing "last pocket 8 ball" which is a specialty game, and it sounds like you are playing it in a bar of bangers out for drinking, dates, and fun?

Come on man, if you were at an actual "player's" pool room in a tournament I can understand. But in a bar where probably you are the best player by far, just enjoy the night out and go with their rules.

I see....and I agree
