Worst rule I've ever heard of

You're playing "last pocket 8 ball" which is a specialty game, and it sounds like you are playing it in a bar of bangers out for drinking, dates, and fun?

Come on man, if you were at an actual "player's" pool room in a tournament I can understand. But in a bar where probably you are the best player by far, just enjoy the night out and go with their rules.

It was a tournament with guaranteed 500 for first regardless of number of entries. There were 32 players. So no I wasn't just playing for fun

Here's an example of why it should be irrelevant which ball goes in first...

I've never played this rule in 8ball, we don't have that rule in here where I live, or even in big 8ball tournaments that I've seen, this rule is new to me, but here's the thing to focus on when playing pool.

Rules can be changed and redesigned for each tournament, this is usually the case in every tournament and I've seen this happen for many many years in every country. It's not a new thing, it's been in pool for decades now.

Usually tournament director and tournament creator can change few tiny rules here and there in every game, but he should have those set of rules written somewhere.

Lets be honest, in pool there isn't ONE RULE FOR THE WHOLE WORLD, because you can see few tiny changes here and there from country to other, from tournament to other. as I said in previous paragraph, usually TD & the guy who made the tournament will say the rules.

Sometimes you can find 9ball tournament, where TD tells you in the start of tournament, 9ball on spot for breaking, touching balls is foul, or touching balls is not foul, or if you break and made the cueball with balls, all balls spot, or not, then on 10ball you can find so many different rules that can be played, depends on guy who made the tournament.

Anyway the point i'm trying to make here, is i've never personally played that rule, but if the TD says it is the rule of that particular tournament, then yes, you lost the match, but sorry that you didn't know or ask about the rules prior to playing in that tournament.

But if they lied to you and it wasn't a real rule, then sorry that it happened to you and these guys are jerks.

What an assclown-rule! Around her last-pocket 8-ball is only played by bangers, anyway, but I believe the rules are somewhat similar to what the op suggsted. which is one of the reasons why I rarely play it. I've never met a decent player who insisted on playing by these rules.

Paul,

Had this exact setup at a BCAPL National years ago. My opponent was playing the solid. I had the eight. HE called the ref. Unintentionally ran the cue ball directly into the eight ball. The ref called GOOD HIT and walked away. I about pooped in my pants. Told HER my ball was the eight. SHE told the chief ref it was a split hit. I rarely and I mean rarely ever call an amateur ref to my table.

One of the dumbest rules I've ever heard of is if you're on the 8 ball and it's behind the headstring and your opponent scratches then you have to kick up table and back down table to try and hit the 8 ball.

With this rule your opponent gets reward mightily for intentionally scratching.

same here, its agreed, ban all 8 ball from bars immediately

I'm not sure that's the worst rule because there are so many terrible ones, but that's pretty bad. I have heard even otherwise fairly savvy players get lost in the weeds of "which ball goes in first." Is there ever a situation where that matters? I can't think of one.

Dude that is on all levels man!!!

so i'm playing in this last pocket tournament and both my opponent and i are on the hill. I call a bank shot that is very hard and make it but before the 8ball goes in the pocket i called the cueball hits his last ball in the corner pocket. They tell me i lost the rack and match because my opponents ball went in before the 8ball even though i made the 8ball where i called it and it went clean.

The tournament is at a caribbean club in the middle of the ghetto and i don't really know anyone there so even though i wanted to get into a yelling match i just packed up my cues and left.

Has anyone ever heard of this retarded rule before? Is it a thing in last pocket?

that wrong man go get your money back man and don't do that again.

This was the shot BTW. I ended up making the 8ball in the far corner pocket (the one down by the bikes in this picture):

Could you play safe or did you have to shoot to make it?

I could have played safe but I was in the zone and knew I would make it. It was an all Spanish speaking bar and I only speak English so the rules were announced in Spanish and the tournament director explained them to me personally after but never mentioned this rule. Just found out today there was a few grand riding on me to win too so that muddied the waters even more. That being said I still believe it was a real rule for the tournament and they weren't lying to me.

Where was this place?

Unfortunately, I have not just heard of this rule, but had to suffer under it for years. In the Virgin Islands and elsewhere in the Caribbean that I know of, the traditional rules of eight-ball, including last pocket, were that if the opponent's ball fell first it was a loss of inning. Thus, if it occurred when making the eight it was a loss of game. Thankfully, we've led the players here out of the dark ages and anyone who is into the game now plays BCA rules.

BTW, in last pocket, as we play it, if you make the opponent's last ball (without, of course, making the eight), s/he gets to choose a pocket.
