Would Short-Rack Banks Make a Good TV Game?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but what about putting short-rack bank pool on t.v. instead of speed pool or even trick shot competitions? I think it could maintain the integrity of the game while having a similar appeal to the non-playing public... Just a thought

I think it would.

Yeah, it would be the better of 2 crappy viewing experiences.

Remember, you are preaching to the choir here- we are pool fans- but non pool fans do not want to wathc 'real' pool.

You would still have to change the rules a bit, Short stack banks isn't a walk in the park if your good at it (btw I am not). I have seen some strong players duke it out with a lot of safety play. I was thinking though that a Bank pool ring game would be good for TV in the format they use at the DCC.

From the way things seem to be going, it looks like you're right. I just think if a game as great as pool is going to sink, it deserves to go out with some dignity. It's sort of like watching a once-great athlete resort to pro-wrestling or those celebrity boxing matches.

I agree. I was also thinking Honolulu with limited safeties would be interesting on t.v..

Ring Game 9-Ball For TV

Bank pool of any kind would never be successful in television. Non pool player viewers would have no interest in it. In order to appeal to the general public, the game of choice must include the following: it must fast paced, little to no safety play, power breaking, and the more jump shots the better. IMO, ring game 9-ball would be an ideal choice.

I think the general public thinks a sign of a good player is that they bank nearly every ball and it seems to oooohhhhs & ahhhhhhhhs them.

I don't know if you've ever watched 9-ball banks, but from my experience I don't think it would be good on tv. Even watching some of the best players at the DCC the game is still a hard one with a lot of missed shots.

If they can put on speed pool they should at least give 8 ball a try. Its what almost all the nonpoolplayers play and even pool players play it in leagues. Its worth a shot. theyve put eveything else on tv for christ sake.

btw id love to see short rack banks on tv. I dont know if itll work though.

That's exactly what I had in mind when I asked the question.

I don't know. Seeing the pros miss or even miss often may cause non-players to feel less hopeless when they go out and try to play themselves.

Of course, safety play would have to be limited.

8-Ball is too strategic. There are too many options, and it's too hard to explain to the viewer what's going on. They just get confused. Also, it can be very slow at times.

Bank pool is a definite no-go. Unless you have the top players, it's just a mess. The idea is to simplify and speed up the game, not slow it down by trying shots that miss half the time.

As far as I'm concerned, 7-ball is the game for TV. It's fast, obvious, and can be very exciting. I admit, it does lack depth, but it is good for TV. As far as I know it was actually designed specifically for this purpose.

You have a good point, but does 7-ball maintain the integrity of the game?
