If you didn't read these forums (AZ, CCB, etc.), would you still think you would be buying more cues?

Personally, I doubt I would have bought anything other than my Ray Schuler SC250. I had previously bought a handful of production cues, but I really had no reason to buy anything to replace the Schuler.

But, buying cues is like a sickness, and I certainly caught it from someone. And the more people come to these boards and see all the fine cues people seem to be buying up, the more they want to buy. In fact, my cue buying has flowed over to some of my fellow league players, players who represent the typical league players who would have never considered buying something other than there old McDermott or Mali with nylon or no wrap, hidden in their soft case or O'Neill hard case.

I think so Fred. I started buying/trading cues in 1988 long prior to discovering some of these websites. Personally, believe that these forums have enabled some of the lesser known cuemakers to get their work out on the street outside of their own regional areas.

I actually found this forum when I was looking for information on cues...lol. I sold my old Huebler because I was going to take a break from pool. When I came back I wanted to get something nice in the $500-700 range but couldn't find anything that I really liked. This is when I got talked in to buying a $1200 DP cue, which, unfortunately, was then devalued because he ruined his market by flooding eBay. After that I had been bitten by the cue bug and soon thereafter bought a Gilbert player from Cueaddicts.com, which I still kind of regret selling. Then I found this site looking for information on cue makers that I had never heard of before but seen their work on cueaddicts, classiccues, and various other cue sites on the net! :D :D I guess I did it bass ackwards?!

Although AZ could probably be considered an "enabler" to my cue addiction...I been buying and selling cues since 1990. I really didn't settle into a good cue until around 1997...which is when I could afford it as I was able to get a real job.

I believe it has contributed somewhat to my cue trading prowess...but...I bought my Schon from Erik long before I found this board.

I think regardless, I am always going to want to tinker with certain aspects of my game...mainly looking for more power on the break in my case. I just never have felt comfortable not being able to slam the balls like you big guys can.

One day I am just going to have to pay up to Corey and get some breaking lessons...his soft break truly fascinates me.

Great post

Fred,

This is a good post. I used to collect Nike shoes and was on another forum. That forum always had me wanting things that I did not need- just for collecting purposes or fear of missing out on something that would go up in value. I sold most of my shoe collection and made some good money.

So my answer is yes, I would say that this forum contributes to me buying more cues. It provides opportunities and information on cues that I would never have heard of. Prior to coming here, I had one main playing cue and a break cue. I never was an equipment junkie of any sort. I used rough sandpaper to rough up my tip. One of my favorite cues was an joss that cost $105 (at cost). I played with it over my Black.

I bought one of the limited ER cues and that was the start of it. I am not unhappy with the cues, but I know that I can only play with one cue at a time and it takes me a few months to adjust to the cue- esp with inside. I like the collecting part of it but I really want to find a cue that I play with confidently. I am limiting myself to what I have on order and the lists. I am pretty sure the Bender is going to win out.

Fred, my honest answer would have to be, yes.

I have loved the look of custom cues since I first learned how to play the game and that was long before the internet. I have a relatively small number of cues, with only a couple of any value. I don't really consider myself a collector, but if I ever win the lottery, I could become a collector very easily.

My real problem is, I have too many expensive hobbies and not enough money to feed them.

Happy to see you've seen the light.

SORRY

Fred

It's nothing to be ashamed of.

I think you're right. But it's more than just temptation, it's purpose. I would have been bored with just buying cues. These forums give us a chance to network too, making it a lot more fun.

I don't think it is the website, at least not for me...but it doesn't help (or hurt) any. At least you know you are not alone out there.

For me, it was getting back into pool after 20 or so years away, and having some success in league play. I started out with a Meucci SP and was fortunate enough to be on a team that made it to Vegas. My first time there seeing all the cues and vendors, I was hooked. Now I have been to Vegas with teams 4 years in a row (not this year), played in the Super Billiards Expo (senior singles and team events), Glass City Open (amateur side) and some other events that had large cuemaker exhibits. I caught the bug big time at these events. That is where I found that there were lots of people (like all you guys) who were just as bitten (if not more so) than I was.

I just realized I loved the game of pool and wanted to be around other people who felt the same. The cues sort of fit in there somewhere...not exactly sure where......

Not in a million years.
Based on my knowledge before this site was up, I probably wouldn't know a custom cue if someone hit me in the head with it.

Zeeder, what's the name of that club again. I need help :-)

It's OCBA "Obsessive Cue Buyer's Annonymous" where we can discuss our affliction with OCBD...lol.

SC250 is a nice looking cue by ray... How much did you pay for yours?

I don't really think this forum has influenced my cue-buying at all. It is a great place to come and look at photos of people's cues, and I do look at the "For Sale" posts to see if there's anything I'm interested in buying...so far I haven't purchased any cues from those ads, but you never know. I buy most of my cues locally....as a matter of fact, I just made a deal on another Ivory jointed Tim Scruggs last night in a local pool room.

Been buying and selling even before I discovered the forum. The thing is that I was concentrated in mostly low and high end production cues before and a few customs like Southwest and Ray Schuler. Most of the production cues I had is gone now and i'm practically in custom cues right now. Now I enjoy my custom cues more. ;)

Amen............. ;)

I love looking at the gorgeous cues, and AZ has undoubtedly made me want to experience more of them.

Fred mentioned some people around him buying cues. That would work for me. I don't necessarily need to buy every maker's cue, but I do like to experience them. I haven't tried that many. I'm on my second Jacoby and third DZ (the only two cues I currently own), and I've played with a Mottey, Gina, Capone, Coker, Wayne, and Dayton. They were all great, but I liked the feel of the Capone the most. I should've bought it, but I wasn't about to pay Japanese retail. I really should talk to Mr. Capone at the next Valley Forge Expo.

Yep. AZ has definitely made me want to become the best cue afficiano that I can be! :D I found out about custom cue makers when I started going to Valley Forge in '00, but I was only interested in the big names then and I also didn't think I could afford a custom cue either. Now, I'm able to see and hear about the future, up and coming big time cue makers, and I now know that you can get a NICE custom cue for the price you'd pay for a production cue because of AZ as well. :D
