Would you consider Biado beating Ralf an upset?

There's a raging debate in another website about this.

I do not consider this an upset, because I usually base my picks on their current form, especially the way Carlo Biado has been tearing up the pool scene this year, and not on past credentials.

Its not even a big surprise if Carlo wins the championship

7 to 1 now with Biado leading over Shane. Still think that SVB can still pull it off at alternate break format and that Biado's win over Souquet was a fluke?

I would love to find out some more takes about this...

Ralf was arguably the best player in the world some years back. Seems like lately he's not nearly as often a factor, still one of my favorite players though. Biado on the other hand is a fast rising up and comer that I don't think anyone wants to see their name by on the board right now. Upset? Not at all, in my opinion.

Win or lose against SVB, as their match went hill-hill just right now, he's already proven he belongs.

Thanks for the response!

Of course not. Biado at this point is a top professional player who is young and hungry. Beating him is the upset actually.

Well, if Shane is out and it can't be an American who wins, then I'm rooting for the Filipinos.

Go, Carlos, go!

Not an upset based on current form-Ralf has not played at top form in a couple of years. It was his bad back for 15 months or so-Now it just may be age-he is 45.

Upsets?

In my opinion, when any of the world's top 100 players compete there are no upsets.

The difference between them is negligible, but beyond that it's who's hot at the moment. When Appleton ran those 200 in l4-1, he was the best in the world. Several hours later Hohmann beat him in the finals. At that moment, Testy was the best in the world.

Ralf... I don't think he's done as a player or anything.
Looks like he had a killer year in 2011, 150k. Then a huge drop in 2012 to 36.
If it's back problems, what a nasty impact... 100k "lost" from some random physical ailment.
Hope he banked some away and is on the road to a full recovery.

After playing shane in a US Open, Biado should not suffer too badly from "OMG I'm playing a top pro
in a major with lots of people watching".

Carlo Biado has been finishing high in the money lately, so to claim that him beating Ralf is an upset is just flat out wrong.

One of the great things about pool is that the game does not care who you are or where you're from. The game has no memory, is not interested in the past or the future, it is only interested in what you do in the present. I love that about pool.

Ralf is one of the all time great tourney players, a HOF player. The table and balls do not care about reputation.

Carlo Biado will most likely defeat Ralf.

I like Ralf, but Carlo is way too hungry, has put so much work in this past year... There's really little stopping him unless Ralf keeps him in a chair for 9 straight racks.

To win in 9 or 10 ball you have to have three things:

1. Good racked balls (A friend of the racker)
2. Accurate consistent power break
3. Luck. (call it what ever, GOD's power, randomness, your day, in stroke..)

Biado has all 3, Ralf has luck only (in term of ball making and position i give Ralf an edge), therefore, it is not an upset, just like if he plays Efren, we know who is going to win... Take for example Nick the Greek, he plays good but no where near Biado, Lee Van, Dennis O, ..and many other pros, but luck prevailed a bit longer with him, than anyone expected, based on his 1st 9-0 match loss.

Carlo Biado better be wide awake and watch Thorten Homman sharking moves, i am sure his Piony buddies will help him out a bit in that arena.
