Would you ever.........

Depends on the game, depends on the amount, depends on the cue...in that order ;). I have certain cues I would never put up, no matter the amount.

The more I think about it, the more I think the answer to this forum question is "Yes" for every single reader.

Because, admit it: You'd put up one of those "certain cues" against Stephen Hawking's million dollars, right?

So it just boils down to 'what's your number'.

Classic Hustle

Sounds like to me you were not the first player he offered this gem of deal to, its all about the Hustle, Your are in a strange room , with a player of unknown and unshown speed, offering you a deal on some action. All the red lights should be flashing at this point.

You made the right move by not taking it.

Unless you are pretty sure you can out hustle the hustler that is , at that point i would have suddenly remembered , damn i do have some cash on me and matched up.

Hustling the Hustler is always hard to resist

lotsa good answers guys !

I have seen guy do that and lose the cue. If I dont care much about cue I would do it, but if it my favourite and I refused few times already
If it is my favorite player, there's no chance!

No way. Not to a stranger.
Maybe if I knew there was a chance we could match up again so I could win my cue back if on the outside chance I should lose it the first time.
Otherwise, no way.
I thought the same thing

I never bet my cue and never will.My cue feels like part of my arm when I play. Do I wanna chance losing my hand and forearm??

I have won probably five or six cues off of other players. I have also taken players' cues to hold until they paid me when they air barrelled me on a bet.

I would hold the cue for a certain amount of time to give them a chance to pay me back. Normally, I would hold them for a couple of weeks. Not one of them ever came up with the money, so I either sold the cue or kept it.

Included Adams, Palmer, McDermott, Muecci, Helmsetter, Esporita (sp.?) and a beautiful early Joss West with lots of ivory.

I gues the craziest thing I ever beat a guy out of was his car. He went bust and put his car title up against $300. A Honda Civic.

I drove that car for two years until the timing chain blew.

I had quite a collection at one time..

Stones

Sounds like he was hiding his speed. I value most of my cues more than their actual monetary value, so no, I probably wouldn't do that.
Ya think? lol. BTW I agree w/you its MORE than just monetary value in the cue.

Ah the old bring your kid and pretend you're a dad that can't play trick eh? I'm suspicious of 100% of all people I don't know that play near me. I watch for tells that they are pretending to not play well.
:D:D I thought it was pretty good ! I made him though.

The only real question you have to ask yourself is, "Is the risk worth the reward?" If you feel it is, flip it! But as someone else mentioned, establish cue value before you begin.
Ahhhhh, spoken like an investor. ;)

Nope. If I lose money I can just say that's my limit. Doesn't mean I am broke. If I have to put up my cue. Makes it look like I am broke. Tough enough playing for money you don't want to lose. Can't imagine a hill game. Thinking if I miss this shot I may never play with this cue again. If I lose just money. I only have to come up with money to gamble again. If I lose my cue. I have to come up with money for a cue and money to gamble again.
Verrry Wise. This makes total sense.

If Stephen Hawking is betting a million dollars I'm not betting against him, no matter how much of a lock I seem to have.

You are wise beyond your years :)

I think my number is $1000 if I feel it's a coin flip to win.

When I was single and in the Army...yeah I might think about putting my cue up if its the right game...

Now??? Married and living check to check....hell no! I don't think I'll ever have that kind of cash to throw at a cue again! My wife would loose her mind!

I'm certainly no big-time gambler, BUT this is where the $$$ is ! :)

Put up your "player" cue as money for action in a set match??

I was playing in a strange poolroom, did not know the owner or the room. I was travelling thru the night after league, and had left my case in the car. I decided I had a few hrs before I was to meet someone, so I found this room.

The setting:
About 5pm, I am on the 3rd table in from the door on a 9ft. diamond. A 40's(ish) black gentleman with a 10yr old boy get on the table next to me. The Father can't play and the boy is just pushing the CB all over the table. I was just shooting balls, and practicing shape/placement, so when I hadda straight in shot, I'd just fire it in.

This got dad's attention, and he asked me to help him with his son. I did , helping him with his stance so he could hit the OB. I left them alone, and ten mins later the boy sinks a ball. Dad & boy are jubilant ! They keep playing and dad doesn't have a lick of a stroke, yet he pulls some nice position for 3 rails on more than 1 occasion.

Almost an hour after I help the kid, Dad asks me to play him a set. I was getting ready to leave, so i made an excuse........................
"hey, i'd love to, but I don't have any money, I'm broke." I figured he would just shrug it off, and play his kid. Instead, he pulls this "Roll" outta his pocket and says "I just got paid" I made him peel the roll, It was mostly 5-10-20's with a 50 or two dotted in, and a hella lotta singles. He said, "i'll play you for your cue," The roll wasn't big enuff.:p

Would you put up your player as $$$ to get action ???

(assuming you both agree on value of cue)

yes, if I was favored for sure..............

Been there, done that. Lost a great cue and that was it, never again.

Some people have said if the game were a lock, they would bet their cue, but how can the game be a lock if you've ended up out of cash and desperate enough to bet your cue?
All it shows is that you have a gambling problem and don't know when to quit.

Maybe you didn't have the cash on you at that time, when the opportunity presented itself?
