Would you rather?

Never hit with a Searing...but my Bill Schick (crafted in 1990) was a complete custom, for me, exactly how I wanted it...if your gonna lay out a nice chunk of change on a custom cue, might as well be exactly what you want, as opposed to what someone else wanted...

This question really doesn't apply to a specific pool cue maker or design and should be reworded as the following, which could not be more obviously queried:

Do you like playing with a specific design approach cue model or are you flexible / adaptable to playing with any cue?

Given that cue makers do not vary their design approaches that much (yes, they can vary small things like joint pins and joint diameters, butt and shaft diameters, and various minimal functional / visual materials like ferrule, joint and inlays if capable), but usually they are quite set in their ways when it comes to:
  • Their butt and overall weighting approach (forward vs middle vs butt heavy)
  • What type of butts they manufacture (merry widow only vs points and the approaches to put them together vs full splice), wood vs other materials (CF, etc)
  • No wrap only vs linen wraps possible vs all wrap options (leather and others)
  • maple shafts vs LD (CF, kielwood, lamited, etc)
I am very happy that all 5 of my current cues came with factory hard rock maple shafts as it is all that I play with, I also prefer 6 high / low warm wood SW style cues with quite a forward weighting (usually identified by people saying "your cue feels noticeably lighter than what it weighs out in its specs"), black joints and butt caps with nice ringwork around them, black football leather wraps plus 12.5mm long pro taper original maple shafts with a soft G2 tip. One of my 5 is a no wrap cocobolo sneaky.

I've never seen a Searing in person. If it were a possibility and I were going to get a new custom built by Searing, I would want it built to my specs/wood types/etc. I'm having a couple customs built by a different maker at the moment and they will be built exactly the way I want them.

That said, I don't mind buying one that's already built but would definitely want to hit some balls with it. I own several custom cues and have hit with most before purchasing.

Own a Searing built for you or anyone else?
Try being a little more clear about what you're asking. Do you mean would you rather have a Searing built custom for you and have to wait or buy one built for someone else and have it now? I'm not sure what you're asking. I'm sure anyone would rather have something built custom for themselves if there's no downside and it's just a matter of having one that's built exactly how you want it, versus settling for someone else's vision.

Also, with the custom cue market there is always the discussion of price. I'm quite surprised to see noticeable markdowns on new Carmeli cues recently but similar builds from Jim Pierce, Barnhart and others seem to be going up, plus Mike Stacey cues seem to be selling at their "normally low" great prices for what you are getting. I have 2 Carmeli 6 points plus one Pierce 6 point and all of them play great.

Curious what else people have noticed for custom cue price fluctuations???

I know this will invoke the ire and wrath of others, many of whom have never even touched a Searing cue.

IMO, he is overrated for the amount or praise and adoration heaped upon him. There’s other cue makers
that build cues equivalent in design execution and their cues cost a helluva lot less & they have no bad press.

People will come forth and criticize me for saying Dennis Searing can build amazing pool cues but…..his aren’t
any better than the workmanship of some cue makers that’s just as talented but also have no customer gripes.

I am not saying there’s anything inferior about his cue making. Quite the contrary as I think Searing is very talented
but there’s other cue makers equally skilled. But since he garnishes the highest praise, IMO, it really isn’t deserved.

I agree on equal or even better workmanship by some other cue makers. That said he has without a doubt earned his reputation, praise and price point. That didn't happen by accident.
