Would you spend 10 bucks

The one pocket match with Scott Vs Alex was going to charhe 10 dollars @ the door and
due to complaints from regulars, they have decided not to charge.

I found this out on Scott's FB page. What are you guys thoughts on this?

I personally would have happily paid to see this if it were close enough but

evidentally a lot of people would not. Any thoughts from you all? Is this really

good for our beloved sport? I think NOT!!

And people ask why there isn't more money in pool. Won't pay $10 for 2 of the top 1 pocket players in the world. I just don't get it. Johnnyt

"At the door" just to get in the place I can see how they would complain. Most would probably just float around the room half watching and wanting to play pool themselves. Any reason the owner can't have the 1P match off to the side cordoned off with seats surrounding it that people can pay for? And if you don't want to pay, then you get to stand on your toes from the other half of the room and watch from there.

For the Manny and Floyd fight, our room charged $10 at the door....
....but you got to play pool for that charge also.
Everybody was satisfied, including our room...the food and bar did good.

We were filled to legal capacity and had to turn away about fifty people.

I think it depends. I know 10 bucks isn't much but what are you getting if you pay to watch this match?

If you are just paying 10 bucks to enter the room and stand behind an adjacent table all the while hoping to see a few racks then I could see why the cheapskates are complaining.

However, if they are turning this in to a real event with proper seating then I could see how they could charge to watch. They could have even went further. For twenty bucks you get VIP seating with a signed promotional flyer.

There are plenty of bars that charge a cover on certain nights of the week/certain events. Tons of bars around my area charge cover for fight nights. Just the way it is. No chance I would go complain to the owner that I'm not interested in the fight, so I shouldn't have to pay the cover.

It's easy to walk down the street and find another bar. It's not easy to walk down the street and find another pool hall. Being a regular at a pool hall isn't the same as being a regular at a bar.

Anyone that wouldn't spend $10 to see it live is nit.

I don't care if you are "regular" or "out of town"

Ken

So, I'm a nit, because I want to go to the pool hall to play pool and not go watch a pool match?

I frequent places that I play pool at. I don't frequent a pool hall to drink and watch pool.

Any place that charges a mandatory fee for something I don't want, is somewhere that doesn't need my business. Maybe AzB should start charging $10 per month. You'd be a nit if you didn't spend that. Let's see how well that would work out...

I'd happily pay $10 for that, but I would never pay a "cover" charge that didn't cover anything I'm there for.

Ken_4fun, would you pay a $20 cover charge to get into your favorite restaurant, because the latest teen pop star was signing autographs? You'd be a nit if you didn't support your local business...

I've paid $400 for (2) tickets for various shows.

I would go to another restaurant if I didn't want to pay the cover. I wouldn't DEMAND that I could go for free, because I have been there before.

The "teen pop star" has me a little thrown off. If it was Lou Gramm (or Mick Jones), I would pay $100 or more and not blink an eye. These players are the "Lou Gramm's" of pool IMO.

I have been to a number of pool room tournaments where I paid to get in only to find a lot of other people didn't. It is hard to do fairly so it may be best to just charge a cover charge good for a few drinks or something and everybody pays no exceptions or don't charge at all.

I wouldn't spend $10 to see any pool player...ever.

I've given $10 to hundreds of pool players.

I enjoy playing the game, not watching it. I guess I'm a nit.

That said, I would have no problem with my regular place charging everyone. They should, that is the benefit of having a CUSTOMER base. Anyone who feels they should get in for free because they are a regular customer is an idiot. If I were the room owner, I would be looking for someone to sell my business to or I would start nickle-and-diming every regular who complained.

Want to park in my lot? $2
Want chalk? $1
Want me to turn the radio on/off/up/down? $5

I'll never understand why pool players think they should get things for free. Hold a tourney at a bar and expect the bar to match the entry fee. Come to a pool hall five times and expect to play for free. Drink water and don't tip.

Anybody wonder why the places to play are closing?

$400 for tickets? That's fantastic. I'm glad to know that you are capable of spending such money on tickets. I've spent over $600 on two tickets before, then another $100 in drinks, $100 or so in food, and a good bit in gas, when it was high. I don't brag about it, because that was something I wanted to go to. Seeing two pool players at my regular spot is not something I want to pay to see. I go to the pool hall to play pool. You think that's nitty?

I wouldn't demand I get in for free either. I never said I would. I would go somewhere else and they would lose my business for the night.

The teen pop star was my point. I'm sure you don't want to see a teen pop star, just like I don't want to see two pool players play at the pool hall that I frequent.

I can see the complaint IF you're not going to watch. I've been to many places where all I wanted to do was grab a few beers and was willing to leave BEFORE the band started, and it was too difficult for the brain surgeon at the door, so I left.
I'm as far from a nit as you will find, and I can see your point, if it wasn't Scott, Alex, Shane, Dennis, Earl, or a few others, or if I wasn't going to WATCH, I wouldn't want to pay either.

No one wants something for nothing you just want to be treated fair.
Something like a tournament is not really done for the players it is done of the venue. If I put on a tournament in my pool room, trust me it is self serving.

I want my customers to enjoy it, have new people come in, not to mention I enjoy them as well. It is advertising. I would not charge someone to come in the door my pool room.

In most cases I have to spend quite a bit of money to get a new customer in the door. If pool rooms would see this for what it really is advertising, they would not resent it so much.

I think this is a reflection of the entitlement people believe they deserve in society. They are "regulars" at this pool hall so they believe a cover charge should not apply to them. It is $10 to see two of the best one pocket players in the world. I really think it is a joke to think the regulars only want to play pool and have non interest in watching this match. They would not have complained if they only wanted to play pool. They just believe they should be able to watch it for free.

There are lots of other places they can play in Vegas on those days if they don't want to watch the match.

I'd be happy to avoid my regular pool hall and go somewhere else. I don't want to watch anything. If I did want to watch, I'd be happy to pay. Just because I'm a regular doesn't mean I should get special treatment. It just means I frequent the establishment often.

It also boils down to how many people actually are willing to pay to watch pool.
I have never payed to watch pool and I never will.

That is unfortunate and I wish players did not share your view on this but they do.

Do you watch free streams/videos on youtube or just have no interest in watching pros at all?

I watch free live streams when I can and when they are on.
I watch recorded live stream matches on YouTube when I have free time.

I also don't have cable, but I do pay for Hulu+, so I can watch recorded shows when I want. However, I'm not willing to pay to watch pool, as I enjoy playing more than I enjoy watching. I would say the same is true for most pool players.

I enjoy watching college baseball, because I can't play college baseball.
I enjoy watching college football, because I can't play college football.
I don't even play golf, but I enjoy watching the PGA Tour when I have free time.

This can always go back to the same old conversations about why pool isn't enjoyable to watch.

Being one who shares the view...

First, why is this unfortunate? Watching pros play pool has never added a single positive to my life. Reading some instructional material and watching Byrne's and Grady's videos did help.

Why I'm not willing to pay to view pool:

1. The commentary invariably sucks. Maybe if you don't have anything to say, don't say anything...just sayin'.

2. I've never seen a venue where you could actually see the table in an exhibition. So I'd be paying to stand too close to a rank, unwashed dude who, apparently, only eats refried beans.

3. The camera angles generally suck on streams. The lighting is horrible usually and I can't tell the 3 from the 7, etc..

I went to a Jeannette Lee thing a few years ago. A lady I was involved with had VIP passes and took me. I was in the front row and lasted through about ten minutes of the black widow bumbling through stories she has told thousands of times and resetting missed shots. Fun stuff.

What this guy said.

A lot is to be said for locals, they keep the rooms open. In the same sense out of town people need to know where to go when they get in town, and yes if I drove from out of town to watch, I'd expect to pay.

In the end though, I'd still pay the $10, and like someone else mentioned, a few of the kids who might not have enough to come in and spend $10 could get in based off others throwing in a $20 and make some new life long one hole players who would grow to love the game.

Well...

If I'm a regular, I don't want to pay to get into the place I frequent.
If I'm joe blow from out of town and came for the one pocket match, I'd expect to pay.

Just like I'm not paying a cover charge to see a band I don't care for, at a bar that I go to daily.

The room owner can either lose regular business or lose cover charge money. You can't have both.

Ah the water drinking crowd-cant lose their business!

If i owned a room i might charge 10 everyday. The 10 would be a credit to spend on anything including table time. I know a room that was ruined by free loaders spending the whole day not only not spending anything but swiping chips etc also. Eventually good people were afraid to go in there. It's finished and for sale cheap.

Im in business-If you cant afford 10-I dont need you.

This makes a lot of sense! A number of years ago, the local pool room had a couple of hours of free pool. People that you never ever saw showed up and played pool for the duration of the free time. They wouldn't buy anything and when the time was up they were out of there. The owner finally stopped doing it because of these free loaders.

It is common for clubs to charge extra cover charge for special events with celebirties, strippers, coyotes, glamor models etc
So it is fine that pool bars charge $10 to watch 2 pool stars

:D
