It is an ESPN event so you know what that means. Saturday when down to 16 they will redraw and go into single elimination, Sunday will be maybe the semi's and the finals with probably shortened races. Thats how they have been formatting the ESPN events anyhow.

All WPBA events have the same format, which is single elimination once they play down to the last sixteen.

FYI, the BCA "Enjoypool.com" Open, though counted in the WPBA rankings, is not a WPBA event, and that's why the WPBA is not in control of the format in that event.

Expect the usual format at the WPBA US Open.

Generally the format the WPBA follows is modified - they use a double elim format until they reach the final 16 then they redraw. Once the redraw takes place it becomes a single elmination format with the semis and the final being races to 7 because they are being taped for ESPN. However...listen to Allison Fisher's comments and views on the WPBA races to 7 in the first episode of the new online pool and billiards podcast at http://www.runoutradio.com

She expressed her views on the currently used WPBA format and it was very interesting and probably not without a little surpises and controversy.

Those shortened races are almost a crap shoot. I don't think any tournament should be decided on a race to 7 especially for pro players!

I believe there are two days of TV taping and shortened races at the US Open. I think the final 8 players will be televised.

Haven't seen the brackets yet, but let's try to make snense of all this.

Just when the youth movement was starting to have it's way, with Ga Young and Xiaoting the stars of the early portion of the WPBA season, suddenly, Allison and Karen have snapped off the last two, at the BCA pro event and WPBA Florida. In some ways, it's the most intriguing WPBA season ever. Adding Kelly Fisher's win at San Diego , there have been five different winners in five events so far. Add Jasmin Ouschan, who has a second and a third in just two events played, to the mix and it sure looks like a six horse race. Of course, there are others with a shot, but I'm looking for one of these to snap it off, so let's size them up.

Allison Fisher
Her businesslike run to the final of the BCA Pro event halted her early season skid, and she maintained the momentum in winng at WPBA Florida. Looks like Allison is back, though whether she's going to play like the Allison of old is still to be seen.

Karen Corr
After dominating at the BCA pro event, she came up empty at WPBA Florida, losing to Kim Shaw and Gerda Hofstatter to finish tied for 9th. Let's see which Karen shows up in Rhode Island. One thing we know is that she's always very dangerous.

Ga Young Kim
Plays well at the US Open, where she's had a first and a second in her young career. Playing well of late, narrowly missing the TV round at the BCA Open after a tough loss to Ouschan, ad finishing sexcond at WPBA Florida. Convincing wins over Xiaoting Pan at each of the last two WPBA events is another reason to take Ga Young seriously as a title contender.

Xiaoting Pan
Despite a surprisingly poor showing in Vegas, she is consistently excellent, but will likely need to beat nemesis Ga Young Kim to snap this one off. Like Ga Young, she has a powerful game that is still maturing.

Jasmin Ouschan
Her raw talent makes her a contender at every event. By her standards, she was a bit off-form at the BCA pro event, and she didn't have her best stuff at the World Straight Pool Championships. Then again, she came 9th in a killer field of over 200 at the last Eurotour event, so her form is a bit tough to gauge.

Kelly Fisher
Skipped the BCA Pro event for personal reasons and missed the TV round at WPBA Florida. Arguably not in her best form right now, but talented enough to win at any moment.

Conclusion
So who am I rooting for? None of the above. I always root for the underdogs, and would really love to see a new face in the winners circle. Monica Webb and Gerda Hofstatter both have a top 5 in each of the last two events, so they may be logical darkhorses. My pick to win it? I'm torn between Karen Corr and Xiaoting Pan, but I'll go with Xiaoting Pan.

Let the matches begin.

I like A. Fisher's chances of winning the whole thing, with Ga Young Kim, Jasmin, and X Pan in the final four. Johnnyt

I'm with you,

SJM, and that was a good evaluation of the players in the mix. X woman has a terrific break... period, but even better considering how tiny she is. I would be interested in knowing who her coach, mentor, instructor is?

She has very good precision, thought processes. I like Ga Young Kim too, although Ga Young seems given to be a little more emotional when she plays, which may be partly to blame for 'off days'. Jasmin, although Austrian, looks like German engineering when she plays, just waiting for that final precision tuning to her engine.

Last US Open finals saw Allison Fisher VS Kim Shaw and allison won.I like to see kim shaw in the finals again.I am rooting for Kim

I just checked and yes, it is the same crappy format!!!

Good luck, Sarah.............

It looks like there is a good chance Monica will face Jasmin in the 2nd round. I would love to see that match up.

Yes, they'll meet in round two of winner's bracket play.

Jasmin not being a touring pro does create some of these early clashes of top players. It's reminiscent of 1999, when Karen Corr, though already recognized as one of the tour's best, had yet to earn her WPBA touring pro status. Believe it our not, at the 1999 BCA Open, third ranked Gerda Hofstatter drew Karen Corr in the first round.

It should be a good one.

Jasmin is out

If this is still at the "one loss" and your out stage, then Jasmin is history. She just lost to Monica Webb in the 2nd round. All of the other standard contenders are still alive.
