WPBA 9-Ball Open

What was the equipment like for this WPBA U.S. Open? Just curious about the pocket size and if it was played on Brunswicks, Olhausen, Diamonds, Gandys, et cetera.

Though the norm is to change the semi-finals to short races for TV purposes, I like the U.S. Open for men's format much better. Thankfully, they haven't gone to this TV format yet. It sucks for all the players who make it that far and then have to play a short race for all the cheese. Though they know the shortened format going into the event, it really doesn't seem like it is representative for all the players who made it that far in the tournament.

Congratulations to Allison Fisher. She's still got it! :)

I disagree, both were equally great at Snooker. Alison has some years pool play on Kelly but am sure they will be equally great at Pool, only time will tell.

They definitely have some depth building in China from what I can see.

There is no question there is quality depth building in the pool ranks in China.

The picture below is from the quarter finals of that tournament. You can see the ladies in the white shirts on the front tables and the guys in the red shirts on the back tables. The eventual ladies winner, Li Jia is sitting at the second table to the left and behind Pan Xiao Ting.

Why are no payouts posted on the WPBA brackets anymore? Did they cut the prize money? Johnnyt

I agree that on titles they are equally good. I also think that Kelly will pick up in the USA and reign when Allison retires - as she did in Snooker. There is no doubt however that Kelly has her work cut out for her in a much tougher field each tournament than Allison and Karen had when they first came over.

Make no mistake, I love Kelly Fisher's game, I have staked her in action and would do so again. I don't think that she has very many weaknesses to her game and doesn't have to lose to any human in any given set.

Lest we forget in Kelly's very first pro match she drew Allison and quickly ran away to an 8:1 lead. Sadly that match got away from her and Allison showed the heart of a champion to win it. But how many can claim to have had an eight game lead on Allison Fisher - ever?

I used to tease Kelly by telling her I was going to announce her as "same name better game". She's too humble to let me do that but I still believe that Kelly "has" the better game. Allison however has the rock solid consistentcy. So, it's a toss up any time they play.

I am just glad that Kelly finally put Pan away. Pan thought she had Kelly's number, glad Kelly changed it. :-)

the event was played on Gold Crowns. The pockets were relatively tight (especially with the extremely high humidity in the tournament room) but did not seem quite as tight as the tables we played on earlier this year. BTW, hope you're doing well. :)

Ya know, Allison is still very young as far a pool players go, she just turned 39 this year and I think retirement is still a long way off! I do think it is great that so many young players are turning up the heat on the game but there is something to be said for experience. Many great players still played well into the 50's and 60's. Efren, is in his late 50's. IMO Pool is not a game where age has that much of an effect in regards to one's ability to play.

Actually, only once, to my knowledge, has a WPBA title been won by a player aged 40 or older. That would be Robin Dodson at WPBA Minnesota in 1998, She was either 41 or 42 at the time.

Of course, if I don't mention it, one of the purists (perhaps my good buddy Jay Helfert) here on the forum is sure to note that Dorothy Wise won multiple 14.1 titles while she was in her 50's, but they were won prior to the formation of the WPBA in 1976.
 
Allision will be winning her fair share of WPBA titles well into her 40's if she choses to play that long. Is Karen Corr getting near 40? Hell of a thing to ask...a woman's age. Johnnyt

According to her web site she was 15 in 1990 when she entered her first womnen's event, which means she was born in 1975 and would be 32.
