WPBA Fine of $2,000

There's some news circulating on Facebook that Sofia Mast was fined $2,000 by the WPBA for competing in the Ultimate USA Pool event earlier this year. It was stated that her sponsors (Olhausen and Pechauer) paid the fine, but they are currently in negotiations with WPBA to have the funds returned. I guess appealing the fine.

Kind of sad to learn this. Maybe that is what prompted Sofia announce that she wanted to go to culinary school, which I think is a good idea. She can still shoot pool, but culinary school will give her a skill set outside of pool.
 
So let me understand this.. the wpba doesn’t come close to providing enough prize money so players can make a living just playing in that but then you want to dictate what other tournaments they can play in trying to make ends meet.

That’s the shitty thinking and what is keeping pool down in a nut shell.

Interesting - now that I think about it, I don't recall the "top" women's players playing in the Ultimate Pool USA tournaments. Does WPBA have rules that prevent, say, Kristina or Margaret from playing other events like Ultimate Pool USA?

So, the WPBA has a rule that elite members cannot play in unsanctioned -- and presumably lower level -- women's open events. That seems to me like a reasonable restriction. I guess the UP people could have gotten the women's event sanctioned, but it might have cost a lot.

I can partially see it for another competitor "tour", IF they actually had enough of their own well paying events.

But what about stand alone women's only opens? Another post out there...

I guess it depends on how you define reasonable and how you define elite.

To me it is incredibly unreasonable to fine players for playing in alternative events when they are barely breaking even playing in your sanctioned events. How can you be both "elite" and broke?

What is the definition of elite? I don’t think it’s common knowledge.

Edit: Fine. I’ll get my head out of my rear and figure it out. An elite meets 2 criteria:
1. Finished 1 of the last 3 years in the WPBA top 10.
2. Any player ranked on the top 32 WPA rankings on Jan. 1.

That is a wild list. How would Kennedy Meyman be on there. I mean she is fine, but not elite. Maybe I don't pay enough attention until it is down to the quarters.

Also, it has Eylul Kibaroglu listed. The Turk is listed as being signed up for the upcoming TX Ladies Open 9 Ball Event. Seems like given Post #9 above that it would be a violation. Kristina Zlateva is listed in the main Open.

Kennedy Meyman has a Fargo rating of 599.

Shouldn't that qualify her as an elite WPBA professional player? :oops:
 
none of any of this matters. it is their business model and they are putting up money.

so if you dont like their rules, then dont join or dont play.

many businesses tell their customers that they cannot compete on their own or in another's business. especially in sports.
