what format is the WPBA event in Peoria going to be this year? hopefully it will be like the old format, and not that joke we had to tolerate last year where they had single elimination starting late friday night, and then ESPN matches on both saturday and sunday.

anybody know?

Considering the fact that the first two events this year were the double/single elimination format, I expect we will see it again.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. This would be terrible news for spectators that can only attend on weekends. Instead of 11 hours on Saturday on 4 to 8 tables, you get 4 single matches over 10 hours (with correspondingly poorer viewing options/fewer good seats).

Though some spectators are enamored with the television rounds (because of the higher stakes and pressure) - I prefer quantity over quality (hey, I'm an American). Please bring back the old format with super-Saturday viewing (Friday is still great with the new format).

I definitely will consider not attending on the weekend.

well put Willie.
if i cant get the hotel room that i want, and considering they are using this new format, i may just consider not even going at all.

and i agree - BRING BACK THE OLD FORMAT!!!

Let the WPBA know how you feel about the format.
Complaining here won't do any good.

DrCue...The new format for the WPBA is the double elimination to the final 16 and single elimination from there. All of the matches are not televised like they were in Peoria last year. Saturday is taken down to 4 tables rather than 8. It really is not a bad format when you see it like that. There is even an element of excitement when the re-draw is done.

I look forward to seeing everyone again in Peoria.

DCP,
Fortunately for me, my pool addiction is so severe that I've taken off Thursday and Friday to watch the early rounds. If I wasn't so sick, and if I could only attend Saturday and Sunday I wouldn't go (I could just watch it on television).

On the other hand, last year we got to play some pool with Jennifer Barretta and SJM on Saturday (Jennifer is the one with longer hair in case you couldn't differentiate the two), and had a very nice AZB gettogether at the Burger Barge as well (courtesy of Vagabond). Well, maybe I would go for the weekend anyway....nevermind this post.

Hey Vagabond, where are you taking us this year??????

It will be the same format as last year, kind of......

A year ago at Peoria, they played down to the last eight on Friday night. While that Friday night session was nothing short of electrfying, the fact that only seven matches were to be played over the weekend was a downer, although the AZB crowd managed to have a grand old time anyway.

This year, my expecations are: a) playing down to twenty four on Friday night, b) after eight matches on Saturday, all on the losers side, redraw and begin single elimination, c) play down to four on Satuday evening, and d) both semifinals and the final on TV on sunday.

I absolutely hate this new format, but if anybody anywhere likes it, I'm listening. Please explain why you like it. I think it randomizes the results in a fairly silly way.

sjm,

I can understand why changing the format in the last part of a tournament won't sit well with a lot of players. I thought it was a cool thing to do once a year, but I honestly didn't think they would keep the format for all the WPBA tournaments. Yuck! I'm seeing your point of view.

Either make it totally single elim or totally double elim. It's not fair to the players on the right side of the chart to automatcally "lose" a match.

It makes even less sense if they aren't going to use this format to show more matches from each tourney!

Hi:

Am not sure, if I like the new format either....haven't worked out the money..which is better for the players...

The new format should give the fans on Saturday time for a nice dinner break...

Me and my lady are going but she is not a fan..do any of you guys have the same problem....if so, we should get them together so they can do other things...well we enjoy the pool....

Am still trying to find out the start times on Friday and Saturday...we will not be there for Sunday....(way too long)....

BTW, I think willbetmore looks like Gerry (The Ghost) Watson...(laffing)

bye for now...Wayne in Toronto

Probably either a 10:30 AM or 11:00 AM start on Friday, and a 12 noon start on Saturday. Each day, you should exepct the play to be completed around midnight, perhaps even a bit later than that.

Wayne,
Well, its obvious you are on your way to being banned - remember, no personal attacks allowed on this forum. Who is Gerry the Ghost, and why are you insulting him like that?????:) :) :)

SJM - thx.. for the times on Friday and Saturday.

As for Williebetmore - what are you talking about banning me....don't do that, I like this site...

If, you look at the IPT site under players in the last column you will find one Gerry Watson from Canada....

(snip).

That's right, sjm, if there's no play to watch, we'll have a grand old time anyway.

Who needs pool when there's the Burger Barge and Vagabond to treat us?

And if we go to Dave's again, I'm gonna beat ol' Jennifer good. No mercy this year. [insert more trash talk here] ;)

Well I definitely can't be there that many days in a row ):

I'll probably only get to be there late Friday, then Saturday and Sunday this year... my schedule is not as flexible. This is all assuming I can even get a room. Ha.

Sure hope fellow AZB poster Raemondo will be there. Met him for the first time last week, when he and his lovely girlfriend visited NYC. They are students at the University of Illinois at the Champaign-Urbana campus, not much more than a one hour drive from Peoria.

Got to shoot for a couple of hours with Raemondo at Amsterdam Billiard Club after the three of us went out for some classic Italian food, and we had a blast.

so, with this new format for saturday, will there still be matches until almost midnight on saturday night? and if so, will saturday evening just be a couple of matches going at a time - as opposed to several matches going all the time?

Never a good idea to notify your victim of a planned attack, Jeff. Now she'll just practice harder to make sure she's ready for you. And besides.........let's hope Jennifer is too busy playing matches to join us this time.

Interesting poolroom we went to last year at Peoria. Won't ever forget the announcement Saturday at around midnight: "Will the bleep who owns the white bleeping Chevy move your bleeping car?" Classy.
