Pretty much never watch WPBA pool matches with the sound (announcers), but once in awhile I surf back and forth to see the run out/patterns. What caught my attention, here the WPBA has Ewa doing a commercial, and she's gotta be in her late fifties, and then RIGHT after the WPA commercial, Sharapova (20 yr old and hot looking) does a tennis commercial, its huge thing when it comes to marketing/business/demographics of the sport. I'm just REALLY surprised/amazed yet NOT that the WPBA hasn't figured it out and use their younger nice looking players (Kostanian etc.) to sell their programming/sport, its sad, but SAMO SAMO......the old guard still has more POLITICAL power......
Annoyed again.....
Go Bronco's

Sarah not having much fun so far... Kelly getting a lot of good rolls AND playing goood. Sarah's got some heart though... GO SARAH!!!

BTW Not even sure how old this match is....

Some of those 20 year olds would be doing well to come anywhere close to being as hot as Ewa is right now when they reach her age...which I would bet is hardly her "late 50s".

Steve

I googled, found out she'll be 45 this coming Feb (she' not 50 sorry), but my point, when the demographics of the playing landscape are half her age, it makes NO sense to not take advantage of this aspect of BUSINESS. The WPBA is a business.
I'd much rather see Maria Sharapova (20 yr old) selling the sport of tennis looking sharp than Martina Navratalova, does this make any sense?
I'm not into bashing...need to do whats in the best interest of getting this game into the mainstream & out of the trenches, we need to be aware of everything that can help this game too make it better & better.

i agree with the above. Ewa of course looks stunning, but it's about the marketing and image of pool. The fact that we don't have any of our younger beauties promoting the game in the few commercials we do have is not ideal.

I heard where sarah mentioned all of her friends on the internet was why she kept playing pool....I am thinking she was talking about all of us here on AZ....

I'm pretty sure she spends time on the Jimbo site as well. Regardless, its pretty nice of her to give a shout out.

Island Drive, sorry you are disappointed with the way the WPBA does things, but if you did continue to watch you have to say that the production has gotten a lot better. They have added some new things in and made it a bit more interesting.

And yes, Kenny and poolsnark, I was talking about everyone here at AZ and jimboarmy that have cheered me on through the good and bad. That was the main thing I wanted to make sure would make it in to the commentary since they didn't use our player interviews much or at all. Thanks everyone.

Sarah

A few things to think about Sarahrella....

1. My Jap BF plays better than all of these chicks!

2. "If I'm right, can't none of these saps win..."

3. It's time to crack this egg...

4. Much like Tiger Woods mom said to him about his shirt... "Wear your red shoes to show your power!"

I recorded your match and watched it a couple times...U never missed a ball... Well just keep giving yourself a chance and it will happen as it already has... I mean if you hadn't givin yourself the opportunity earlier in the tourney you wouldn't have even gotten to the TV table right? Merry Christmas to you and yours...=)

So what your saying, you'd much rather have a 45 year old representing your sport in commercials than the the 20-30 yr old group, WHY? I always look at the big picture and what can be done to make it just that much better "FOR THE SPORT". I think by NOT adressing this matter your slowing the success of your tour. Advertising nowadays uses mostly the younger gals. I'd much rather see you dressed to the 10's representing the WPBA, you need fresh faces, with constant change too make it in todays business world. The production of the tour has gotten better, I just want to see 4,000 people attending each and every venue as I'm sure you would too.

Just wondering...are you talking from experience or just voicing your opinion... Cause if you got the experience to back it up then maybe you should call the wpba and get this talk into action=)

You do understand that companies choose who they want to represent them, don't you? That is not the WPBA.

Besides, there is no one more classy on the WPBA Tour than Ewa. She is beautiful and articulate and has done as much or more for this sport than anyone out there, man or woman. She has also won every major and I can't imagine why you would have a problem with her?

Jeanette is in her late thirties. Does that mean she's washed up too? Johnny Archer I think is his forties. Too old?

Madonna is 50 and still selling out stadiums, age and beauty are not mutually exclusive. However, I do think the WPBA could take better advantage of some of their younger, up and coming talent. There are some very exciting new players on the tour and why not use that to promote the tour? Still, to discount the draw of an attractive and very classy player like Ewa, because of her age (which your obviously a poor judge of) is just short sighted.

One of the great things about pool is that almost any age and fitness level can play. Unlike tennis, which at that pro level is completely youth driven and most are retired by their mid thirties. Believe it or not, just like I would prefer to look at a George Clooney (47) over a Zach Efron (21)... I know many out there prefer a mature woman to what some mistake for their daughters.

Judging from your use of the word "gals" and other terminology in your posts, I am guessing your no spring chicken yourself, Island Drive. What's your demographic?

I am by no means short sighted as too whats best "FOR THE SPORT" (I'm just the opposite, I view the game as a whole). Here is a missed OPPORTUNITY to utilize the new gals, look at how tennis embraced Sharpova and road that horse after the last beautiful blonde young player (Anna Kournikova) started falling off her game, is this a bad thing, I think not. I've known Ewa personally for over 20+ years is change not good, I'm sure the younger players could also use the $$$. Her beauty has never been in question. Clooney and Madonna, not sure where to go with these non-sports figures, tho I'd much rather look at Aguilera than Cher or Madonna:grin-square:

I think Island Drive has a point. We should all stand back and take a look at what's going on. If we as observers can put in our 2 cents long enough to not get offended, we will actually get somewhere. Eva is a true legend of the game, and she's apparently cultivated a large fan base verified by posters on this thread. We should take a deeper look into what the point of this thread was and that was to help grow the sport. Look at what Michael Phelps has done for the sport of swimming. I know many, many children who want to be just like him and these are kids who would've never thought about going near water! If we want to attract growth, we should focus on youth and youthful marketing strategies. In my experience, the viewer must appeal to what he/she is watching on multiple levels. In some areas, experience is good, but for TV and advertising, pop culture dominates. This is a fact in America. It's not a very honorable one, but it is a fact worth recognizing.

Island Drive, I didn't say I agree or disagree. Of course I think the younger players should get a chance to promote the tour. The commercial you saw had nothing to do with the WPBA, it had to do with Pool and Billiard. Ewa has worked for and with Pool and Billiard for many years and she is a very recognizable face in the industry. I have to agree that she looks better than many of us 20-somethings that play on tour. Not to say that there aren't other representatives that could do something.

In order for others to get commercials their sponsors need to help sponsor the WPBA in order to get a commercial during matches. Keep in mind, Canon, who Sherapova endorses has a bit more money to put a commercial like that together.

Maybe you should send an e-mail to the WPBA with your suggestions. I'm glad you liked the changes that have been made so far though.

Thanks for your above post, expressing my point thoroughly on a key board has never my strong point (I wish I could write as good as JAM).
Years ago when I first ran a couple BCA Jr. National events (and the BCA All American Tour and oversaw the Instructor program) I first met Sarah and her dad (stand up people) at Magoo's OK, & Chelsea and Allison Hardwick (probably 8 & 10yrs. old at the tiem). It was because of seeing kids in the ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTE enviornment that I personally wanted and helped implement along with John Lewis to get them "out of the bars" and into the colleges for their coveted Jr. Nationals event. Shortly thereafter the BCA decided to not support the player/program side of the office. I saw where they were going and shortly thereafter quit, also, John Lewis moved on along with player programs, and started American Cue Sports (ACS)
