WPBA to organize Women's World 8-Ball Championships

Has the WPBA ever produced an 8 ball event before? Or has there ever been a major women's 8 ball event? I don't recall the women playing in one.

Only in Brit 8ball/blackball afaik. No major US-style 8b championships for women afaik(which isn't much).

The resurgent Womenโ€™s Professional Billiards Association has taken its boldest step in years, signing a two-year deal with the World Pool Association to produce the WPA Womenโ€™s World 8-Ball Championship.

In a post on social media, the WPBA revealed that the 2025 Womenโ€™s World 8-Ball Championship would take place July 2-6 at the Oneida Casino in Green Bay, Wis. The event was announced as a 64-player, โ€œinvitation onlyโ€ field.

According to WPBA President Dean Roessler, the association has guaranteed โ€œa minimumโ€ of $125,000 in added money.

โ€œWe didnโ€™t list the added money because weโ€™re in the process of working with additional sponsors that would increase that number. Thatโ€™s also why we have not listed a top prize or prize money breakdown.โ€

Roessler added that the prize money breakdown, when determined, would likely not feature an eye-popping top prize.

โ€œI think weโ€™d prefer to pay good money to more players than have a top-heavy distribution like weโ€™ve seen in the past.โ€

For all its world title events over the years, the WPA has never crowned a womenโ€™s world 8-ball champion.

โ€œWe wanted to do a big event,โ€ Roessler added. โ€œAnd the World 8-Ball is what was available."

Roessler also said the WPBA is negotiating with several streaming companies and plans to construct two TV arenas.
A nice change for any WPA womenโ€™s world championship event to actually be held in the states as opposed to historically always being held in an Asian country. This should provide the opportunity for more US players to compete without spending a fortune in travel expenses, if they qualify.

Sadly just the opposite for the Asian women players, who currently make up 25 of the top 33 world female Fargo ranks.

Its an 'invite only' event so just how many US players will be in it? Not many to say the least. It would make more sense, and draw WAY more fans, if it was held in an area where most of the players are from.

Agreed, and I assume that is why these events have usually been hosted by an Asian country. It will be interesting to see how many of these top ranked Asian players will travel to compete in this event.

If they get invited they'll play. Too much prestige/$$ to turn down. As much as i loathe the WPA and their bullshit tactics being a 'World Champion' has its place.

The top Europeans and Asians will travel to play in this, like they always do. The Americans might not even show up in their own back yard (when it's the men) That's why Hunter is often one of 2-3 USA players in international competition. Since it's the women, it will probably have a high USA representation.

How many US women would get an 'invite' to a WC event?

I think you actually are going to see very few US players in this event. Odds are, with a 64 player field, there is going to be very few spots available for US players. This won't be a tournament where a woman player can just say as it's close to home, I think I'll play.
I think one of the reasons it is here for at least the first year is because of Dean. He runs a very good ship for the women, and with the amount of added money already talked about, that doesn't happen on it's own. To get that amount of buy in from sponsors, this has been worked on for awhile.
The women seem to be doing things right, while with the men, all that's talked about is infighting. If I were a sponsor, this would be something I would be thinking about.
I'm looking forward to it, and it's close to home for me.

I think the economy is the largest factor. In the 80's and 90's both men's and women's pro pool was doing well. Mid 2000's to about 2015 range both were doing poorly. The past 5-10 years both have picked up a ton. The men actually seemed to pick up sooner than the women.

They are completely different models. WPBA is non-profit. Everything on the men's side is for-profit. Yet both followed the general economic trends.

Possibly true for the women, but 8ball on the nine-footer is way too easy for the most elite men and the World 8ball is no more than a breaking contest that is in the conversation for the most boring event of the year to watch.

With the women, the runout rate will be quite a bit lower and the World 8ball might be far more compelling.
True that. But the breaking rules where you have an open table after making a ball on the break makes the game far too easy. "Take What You Make" is the only way to go for elite players! That would add a degree of difficulty to the game that they so obviously need.

Last time i chek'd the way D'monds play/don't play is not a roadblock for people trying to earn a living. I would think that distinction would be obvious. guess not.
So what do you want, any woman in the USA that has a whim to play in this World Championship? Can the local banger woman play?

The WPA may be blocking MR right now with MR's recent push. But make no mistake, without the WPA we would have had stupid back pocket 9 ball world championships in everyone's back yard filled with locals. Or more CW's regional events being a World Championship. And without the WPA, we would never have heard of most of the fantastic Asian and European champions that can give the USA players the 6 out.

There won't be anyone that wants to play getting in this tournament. With a 64 player invite only, not hard to figure out the direction they are going. If you actually look at past WPBA tournaments where some of the foreign shooters that occasionally play, and have fargos in the 700's, they have to play the 1st couple day of pre lim tournaments where, some of the players with fargos just above 600 are exempted from those first days because they tend to play all the tournaments. With the WPA involved I would assume that will all go away and you will see a fairly even distribution of top world players. There could be some very highly ranked US players left out in the cold on this. Doesn't matter really what anyone on here thinks, it's their tournament to run as the see fit. I just like that it is 8 ball, and agree with Jay in that it should be take what you make on break for pros, it would make it much more interesting.

i think allison fisher is a US citizen now (and presumably still in the top 10, top 20). sofia mast may also get invited because of her junior WC win. after that, not many north american players.

either way, i hope WPBA up their production game, as some of them have been crap. camera often far from table, and too low.

USA players will probably be the top 8 American's on the WPBA ranking is my guess.

Here is the current list. Top 8 Americans would end at Monica Webb.

I realize you just went down the WPBA list till you got to their top 8 US players, but if this is billed the best in the world, if they did include 8 US players, and I'm not so sure thats going to happen, why pick the US players based on the WPBA ranking which is a ranking system based on how much and how well you play their tournaments. Why would Ashley Rice with a fargo in the 580's be included When you could pick Karen Corr with a fargo over 700? I think you are going to see the foreign players that you normally never see here show up for this. There is so few spots, I would be really surprised to see 8 go to US players.
Who knows, maybe there is more to this invited process than just being good.

That's one of the reason FargoRate was invented I believe. Every other ranking system has an emphasis on participation. We all know the true speed of a player goes by FargoRate, and everything else can be way out of wack. Regardless, no federation is going by FargoRate for invites as far as I recall. I only recall one year maybe the men's US Open used it for the final few spots (might have been another tournament), and I think it was a "promoter option".

8 USA entries is purely a guess by me. I do think usually the host federation has a few more entries than otherwise, so I think 8 might be a fair guess.

I believe the WPBA is linked with the BCA and is the Women's representative of the BCA, which is the America's Continental Federation. If I have that right, then the invites would go down the WPBA list, I believe.

There is no question that with the exception of Allison, most all of the other American women players will get smoked by the top 20+ Asian women players,
