WPBA Trying Round Robin Format

I see the WPBA is trying the round robin format for the last event of the year. I would asume the matches are races to 5. Sounds like it's worth trying. IMO it's better than that final 16 single format. Johnnyt

While I definitely like this format in general (it seems the same as the IPT format); there is one HUGE flaw in my view.

It seems they will again use "games won percentage" as a tie breaker if 2 players in the same group have the same number of victories. In my opinion the first tie-breaker should be "head-to-head" results. If 2 players are tied, then the one that was victorious in their head-to-head match should advance.

The IPT was filled with examples where one player failed to advance, despite beating the advancing player with whom he was tied. In one case a player tied with 2 other players, and still failed to advance despite beating both of them decisively head-to-head.

If that's the case, I think it would be great. I know on a practical level, there are a number of women that routinely attend these events only to find themselves getting knocked out early on a routine basis. However, a lot of these women are very dedicated AND talented. The added experience by playing round robin might help them get over the hump.

Beyond that, I think such a format with a field as diverse as the WPBA will only yield extremely predictable results. Expect (as usual) the top women to do very well with few (if any) upsets in the standings.

A very good observation, I agree!

I also think with the Round Robin format, the cream really does rise to the top.

I like this format a lot. Good luck to all the ladies.

I think it's a good thing, too. The Ladies will be able to play more than 2 rounds than they would normally play. And then they will be playing against more players than they would see in the usual WPBA format.

I am finding this very interesting. I like seeing how many break & runs and other details. The win percentage, really makes every game critical!

Also check out Liz Ford's blog, she is reporting on the event and it is pretty entertaining. She is also playing injured, but has manage to win two matches so far.

I actually thought the players at this level would have more break and runs .. True is depends on the break, table conditions etc.. but I am still shocked to see a lot of 0's and 1's. Is that average?

Well, it is an alternating break format, so they are not breaking as much, as in a winner's break format... and I think it also has to do with the power of the women's break.

Right now Jasmin has the most with 4 and Sarah has 3, both are known to have strong breaks...
