WPC 2006 will be held here in the Phils

Wow....now I'll be making my schedule fit this. I won't miss this.

TheOne will surely not miss this too. :D

Possible venues would be CCP Area (Roxas Boulevard) or Araneta Coliseum (Araneta Center in Quezon City)? News is now on AZBs main page. Possible locations mentioned are all Roxas Boulevard Area.

Keep us posted on firm dates and venue. Need to make bookings ASAP. :)

And here I thought from this thread's title that the WPC was going to be held in Philadelphia. Oh well, time for more coffee.

I guess we must assume, then, that either 1) APBU is no longer running the WPC, or 2) APBU and WPA have fully and retroactively sanctioned the IPT events. Otherwise, all who have participated on the IPT are ineligible to play in the 2006 WPC, as made clear by the following letter:

Dear WPA Board Members,

For your information, after the WPA meeting, APBU has the following new policy in place effective October 12th, 2005.

Best regards,
Spencer Shiau
APBU General Secretary
APBU - Asian Pocket Billiard Union

Impose/put a ban on a player for a specific period of time:

1. The followings apply to all players in Asia.

2. Player who participates in the tournament/event that is not sanctioned by both APBU and WPA, the player will be banned by the APBU for one year.

3. In the above situation, the ban will be effective from the first day of that tournament and will be for 365 days.

4. During the ban period, the player can not play in the APBU or WPA sanctioned tournament/event.

5. During the ban period, any nomination for this banned player by the national association is not valid. If the banned player is nominated, this nation will be treated as forefeit this quota spot.

6. The banned player's name and country will be made public in the annoucements, including APBU internet info site and notices.

7. Ban by APBU will be also notified to WPA World Pool-billiard Association. WPA and its other continental federations will support and follow through the same ban notice sent from APBU.

If WPA/APBU has now embraced the IPT, it is a great day indeed for pool.

I don't think the WPC would ever get the same support in North America that it gets in Taiwan and will see in the Phillipines this November. Keep in mind pool is amongst the most popular sports in those countries, here in North America pool isn't event top 10, 20, etc:( It is better for the good of the tournament that it remains in Asia, hopefully the IPT will change this in the future.

The WPC has been in the US at least twice, near Chicago.

I doubt that the US will get it until the local TV situation changes. When it was in Cardiff, there was something like 60 hours of live broadcast, and I think it was about the same in Taiwan.

From AZB's front page. Looks like first prize money is $100k. Isn't Efren 3 for 3 (at least) in tournaments/matches whose first prize is six figures? However, don't count out Manalo, who won the recent $100k Texas Holdem Event.

Filipinos Favored in World Pool Championships

The hometown advantage is expected to favor Filipino pool players in the 2006 World Pool Championships scheduled to be staged in Manila this November.

Since they don't have to bear the cost of travel to Cardiff of Chinese-Taipei where the previous championships were held and bother about the necessary visas, scores of Filipinos led by legends Efren 'Bata' Reyes, Francisco 'Django' Bustamante, Alex 'The Lion' Pagulayan and rising star 'Marvelous' Marlon Manalo are expected to make it to the knockout round of 64, surpassing the number of Taiwanese who qualified in Kaohsiung last year.

Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today which broke the story on Manila's hosting of the prestigious tournament for the first time has learned that Matchroom Sport has decided to double the qualifying groups from the usual 16 with 8 players in each group to 32 but with only four players in each group.

In the past four of the top players in each group qualified for the tournament proper but this time only two from each group will qualify. It will also be a race to eight rather than a race to five which often resulted in skilled pool players being ousted by less talented players who got lucky.

The top prize in the $400,000 tournament will be $100,000. When Reyes won the title in 1999 in Cardiff and Pagulayan won in Taipei in 2004, the top prize was $65,000. ESPN Star Sports, regarded as the worldwide leader in sports will once again provide extensive coverage of the tournament. There will also be a Philippine coverage component.

Details of the agreement between the Manila hosts and Matchroom Sport and ESPN Star Sports are being finalized and a press conference to formally announce Manila's hosting of the World Pool Champinship is expected to be held sometime before Holy Week.

Reyes said the staging of the World Pool Championships in Manila was welcome news both for Filipino pool players and fans in the country which is considered the hotbed of pool. The tournament site has not been decided upon as yet but among the venues being considered are the PICC, the World Trade Center and the Mall of Asia. A decision will be made after the sites are inspected by Matchroom chairman, British millionaire Barry Hearn, his media director Luke Riches and officials from ESPN Star Sports.
