Wrap Bleed Through

Six Shooter

One of my cues is an Adams Balabushka GB 3.

Within a few months of purchasing it, I started noticing a gummy residue on the Irish Linen wrap.

After a while, I took it to a repair shop to see if they could clean it up a little but they weren't able to clean it up much.

I decided to have it re-wrapped rather than fight the glue.

Now I'm back to the point where it seems like the glue is oozing out of the wrap again.

I don't really want to have it re-wrapped again since it was re-wrapped about six months ago.

What can be used to clean the wrap without totally destroying the look of the wrap or disintegrating the glue that does hold the wrap on?

Secondly, is this a common problem?

Many thanks in advance for any and all responses.

I'll try to help on this. I think you need to find out what glue they are using to install the wrap. Most use Elmer's cut with water, and that is pressed and wiped off as the wrap is installed. Elmer's dries fast and I have not seen or heard of an issue of it staying wet or bleeding thru. Even if your hands get super sweaty during play the wrap glue should stay totally dry, it may get a bit rough though. That being said if you (wet) the wrap too much you could loosen the glue as Elmers is water based. Hope this helps.

It maybe aa pressure sensitive glue. A local repair guy gave me a sample awhile back to try, and I didn't like the fact that it doesn't dry, it stays tacky/gummy. I did a wrap, then stripped it off(wrong color) about a day later and had to use acetone to remove the very gummy residue. I then talked to my buddy and he had the same issues and dont use it any more. I can see this type of glue seeping thru like what you describe. I would have it stripped and rewrapped with elmers, making sure they remove all traces of the old glue
Hope this helps,
Dave.

Thanks to you both for your responses.

Just out of curiosity, why would a pressure sensitive glue be used? I might could understand if I were choking the cue to death but holding a cue lightly shouldn't cause the glue to seep through or am I wrong?

I know that before I had it re-wrapped that the repair shop used Goof Off to try and remove the residue from the original wrap and that didn't work. That was when I decided to have it re-wrapped.

Thanks again for your responses. Any information is helpful.

I use glue stick on my linen wraps an have never had what you describe.

I was thinking about that too Darcy as I know that is what you use from watching your wrap video. I also bought a stick and that is what I use for short wraps. I still use Elmer's All Purpose for regular.

I wouldn't think that the Stick would cause a problem. After I apply it, I use my finger to spread it out more evenly along the handle. So its not like there is an over abundance of glue in big clumps or anything. Its spread pretty thin.

The reason my buddy tried it was it doesn't really dry so you have a long work time, unlike elmers that will start to dry quickly and may need to be re-wetted once or twice. To me, the advantage of that wasn't worth the crap you have to deal with if you need to change the wrap. I didn't have it on a cue more than a day before removing it, so I don't know for sure if it will soak thru after time...I may try it on a burnpile blank and see what it does after a month.
Dave
