Wrap channel issues

Hello,

I have a cue I'm replacing the leather wrap on. I took the existing leather off, and the wrap channel measures .034. The problem is that all the leather wraps I have, or I can find are .024ish thick. Is there anyone out there that can help me with this? Is there a way to build the channel up .010? If you don't want your secrets published please PM me with any help....

Hi,

You need to take the cue to someone who has experience. If you have never done something like this you will be in for nightmares with all things considered.

If you are into cue repair or building cues and have the necessary equipment, the wrap groove needs to be build up with a quick curing epoxy and wait a day for total hardness. The problem is it is very hard to do this without effecting the finish on the cue unless you re cut the entire groove slightly into the existing clear coat after build up of the material.

The best thing is to fill the groove, sand the whole cue flat and cut the groove to the desired dimension before refinishing the entire cue for the best result.

ive used medium thinkness super glue and built up a wrap groove fairly fast. mask off the sides and be patient. ive only used it for very small build ups buts im sure you could go bigger.
 
I have a black wrap that may fit your groove. Give me a min. to go mesure!

Actually, the wrap groove measures right around .034, so I'm guessing a few thousandths under is what I need.
 
Seeing as you already do leather, I would use the same system and do a wrap out of veneer stock, then re-cut the channel. If you wet the out side of the veneer with a sponge it will bend very easy into place.

I recently did one where I used strips of muslin bed linen wrapped around the wrap groove as I was applying epoxy. The effect was kind of like a fiber-glass cloth & resin system. It worked well but a little time consuming as I had to do it twice to get the 'build' I needed.

Your method with the veneer sounds like one I should try.
Maybe I'll use epoxy or Tite-bond instead of contact cement, holding the veneer in place with surgical tubing until cured.
