Wrap or Not

If you ever try cork, you may insist that everything you have gets wrapped in cork.

I poo-poed cork for the most part, for years.

My buddy Guido Orlandi put a cork wrap on a cue, without telling me. Wouldn't have it any other way.. I'm a corker...

Here are a couple of Guido's cues. One is wrapped with cork, one is a no wrap.

Guido said he couldn't make himself cover up that beautiful cocobolo with a wrap material. They are both Guido's new joint cues.

I prefer a wrapless cue.
All my Mezz and Exceed cues are wrapless, even the break cue.
The feedback in a wrapless cue is different, than a wrapped cue.
I like the clean look too.

For whatever reason nothing feels as comfortable as a wrapless cue for me, with leather being the next best. Probably just growing up on house cues did that. I've played cues with leather, cork, and linen wraps, but my favorite is wrapless. Cork was interesting but didn't knock my socks off. I've hated certain linen wraps and loved others depending on the slickness and whether there was a finish on them. I play with a leather wrap at the moment but if I ever get a custom made I'd like it to be a wrapless full splice.

I am 6' 5". The wrap feel doesn't make a difference to me because my hand is right at the end of the cue.

I don't like the way the irish linen picked up the smoke smell, and am glad the SD banned smoking in bars.

I'm a fan of wrapless with a solid shaft. I have a loose grip and the linen can shoot out like a spear. But it can keep the sharks away.

CeeBee, That is some real nice wood.

Wrapless for me.

The first time I bought a cue, I bought one with an Irish linen wrap on the notion that "with must be better than without, right?"

Wrong. The linen wrap always felt slippery in my hand. One day I was at a table without my cue, so I used a house cue. Wow! It was just a cheap house cue but it felt 100-times better than my cue because my grip hand wasn't sliding all over the butt of the cue.

Immediately went home and ordered an OB121 (wrapless sneaky) and haven't looked back since.

YMMV.

One more thing to add, I've always hated how cue makers don't make the linen wrap go all the way back as far as possible through the butt sleeve and all the way to the butt cap.

I know it's silly but it always interrupted my playing when half of my hand would be on the linen and half would be off it.

I prefer just one consistent feel, regardless of hand position.

Lot of people could care less but it made me more conscientious of the cue than the shot.

With the wrapless I don't have to worry about that sorta thing.

Wish cue makers would go all the way back with the linen.
I think Predator does though but I see all these custom cues that don't.

Which one is warped?

I really liked my rubber wrap by mcdermott/predator, it extended all the way to the butt of my cue and my grip hand felt consistent all the time. I have really sweaty hands so the rubber was great at absorbing moisture. Now I'm going to transition to wrapless in a week, wonder how that's going to be.

I've played with sneaky pete style cues for a number of years. What I like, and obviously they are wrapless. What I've noticed last two times I've played is my hand placement isn't consistent this year. Haven't played very much, due to a bad back, and right now a wrapped cue would help my game.

I actually ordered a cue with a wrap couple weeks ago. One with linen, because I've never liked leather or cork. Not sure why I don't like them, just never liked how they feel. Really prefer a wrapless cue from a feedback to my hand point of view, and how they look.

Really comes down to personal preference, how much your hands sweat, and what you like from a feel stand point.

I'm all about a wrap.
My hands start sweating pretty easily. I'm one of those annoying opponents who washes his hands several times during a long match.

I like Pressed Irish Linen, so long that it's done right, you know, that it doesn't feel like raw Pastry Bakery Box wrap string.

I was surprised that I liked the (no-frills) rubber wrap on my Cue Tech.

I was even more surprised that I really like the rubber-esque type wrap on the Lucasi Hybrids. The type of wrap they had (never having felt it before) came real close to preventing me from ordering one. I'm glad I took a chance.

My next cue will likely be the OB-136. I believe it comes standard with a Leather Wrap. I'm hesitant to get a leather wrap. I may go with the option of getting a Pressed Irish Linen wrap. -Z-

Do many use a cue with no wrap? It seems like most come with a linen wrap and some have a leather wrap.

I like a wrap mainly to place my hand in the same position every time. I place it where the wrap meets the the wood. That's on my player.

Preferred Wrapless, now I dont know

I was a linen fan, than I got a wrapless Schon that I got used to. Played wrapless for a couple years, took a lesson with Scott Lee and determined I should be holding my cue right at the edge of the wrap. Now I play with a STL3 we took in on trade with a Runde shaft I had Bob build. I don't care to play with my Runde wrapless with a rubber band on it so I don't have to look at the butt. Maybe once I naturally hold the cue where I should I'll go back to my Runde wrapless. Not sure though, we are a Schon dealer and Bob Runde doesn't make the number of cues to justify having us become a dealer. I will tell you if you want a custom cue that plays great, pick up a Runde.

Exactly. The wrap is an indicator. I do have some wrap-less with designs that I can use for hand placement.
I bought a Schon H4...had leather wrap put on it.
