Question for the cue makers:

Has anyone ever wrapped a cue all the way back with inlays or windows in the butt sleeve? Maybe by notching out around the inlays and gluing pieces of linen in the void. Or maybe using cork or something else that would hold together and glue in nicely. Actually linen prolly wouldn't work. But what ever would be used would be totally flush.

Before you ask, no, I am not on drugs......serious question.


Reason I ask is when I play I'm always gripping the back of the cue. But I like to feel the linen. But I also like inlays, boxes, windows, rings and such..

I'd like to hear your opinions.

If you are always gripping the back of the cue, it sounds like you need a cue that is better built to your dimensions, i.e. a longer cue. But to answer you question, a linen wrap could be taken further back on a cue. As far as the butt cap. I would think that would prohibit any inlays though.

I have never see what your describing but check out Cory Barnhart, he has done some cues with the butt sleeve shorter and the linen pretty far down.

I'm talking about having the feel of the wrap al lthe way back but still having inlays and fancy work on the butt sleeve. I think it would require patches or inserts of the wrap material around the inlays. Maybe you could have the inlay, with a thin border of the wood to frame the inlay in and have wrap material filled into pockets cut in between.

It's a serious question.

Dude, I like the feel of the wrap but too often my grip is beyond where my wrap ends. Seriously. I don't want to switch to a 75 inch cue.

No big deal...

To The OP. This is an interesting question to me because I find my hand halfway off the wrap most of the time. I grew up playing with sneaky petes back in the 60's so what I am trying is a new wrapless cue. I understand you wish to stay with a wrapped cue but thought I'd toss in my 2 cents with my solution.. My new cue should be here in about a week and is 59" long..

That's exactly what I'm talking about except leaving every other patch of wrap material out and putting an inlay or a box. And maybe even a ring or two to break it all up.

Ring work would definitely be a tad easier to work around with linen than
inlays. Altho, when you see what some of the guys can do with CnC or by hand, anything is possible. I've been amazed here more than once and will no doubt continue to be.

If you were to extend the wrap channel further onto the butt sleeve, you could change linen color, or colors.

1/4" ring, 3/4 to 1" linen, then another ring. Tedious but very possible.

Personally, I don't care for the look of an extended wrap but thats just me.
