Hey everyone... had my beloved Josey ebony SP stolen from my car a couple of weeks ago so have been shopping around for different sneaky pete options.

Here is the spectrum I have found so far... the cheap ones would be temporary until I saved up for a nicer one but please still comment if you have played with them.

The prices are approximations of what I have found so far... please give any pros or cons you can think of... thanks!

Low---
5280 $100
Fury $120

Medium---
Joss $200
Mezz $260
Brianna $200

High---
Frey $300-$500
Josey $300-$500

grab the Frey

Get the Frey with the 5/16x14 joint. You will not be disappointed. Next best thing besides an old Scruggs.

i also 2nd that love my bob frey.

if u want a nice cue for a nice deal i got a cc custom sneaky pete i will let go cheap. only test hit. selling cuz i got my frey like 2 days after.

yeah you could do that. i hear a lot of good things about Bob Frey's work but i think i'd go with the mezz.

they can be had for a pretty good price used

I use the double spliced purple heart cue as my road "hustler" cue. I did pull the pin and put in a beefy 5280 radial and cored and taped the shaft. But thats just my pickiness.

you did it yourself? how'd you change the taper? what'd you core the shaft with? just curious. maybe you could pm me so it doesn't take up too much thread space

frey, fo sho.

Mezz is good if you like a stiff hit, but for overall bad-to-the-bone sneaky, go with the Frey.

Joss is boring, and so is Fury.

Josey makes a great cue too. If you liked your Josey, y don't u get another? I assume you're wanting to explore other options. Right?

Yea I do plan on getting another Josey, but there is a wait time so I think I'll save up and get a higher-end one from him in a few months. I guess I'm trying to decide on something cheapish to get in the interim... leaning toward the 5280, Mezz or a Sneakiestpete at the moment.

Are the 5280 total trash as the price would suggest?

Sp

5280 is not worth it in my opinion. If I was really trying to save some $$ I'd pick a simple Rosewood Players SP over the 5280. Schmelke was a good suggestion for a low cost SP.

Also just my opinion, but if you liked the hit of the Josey then you probably won't like the Frey. To me, they have a very different type of hit.

ok frey butt is skinnier than josey and so does mess cue.to me get a 4oz shaft and 14oz butt and you'll have a great sneaky pete.shaft and butt weigh are very important to a cue!!!

the but and shaft taper have a lot to do with how it plays too. it's not all about weight

I'd recommend Rick (poolfool1957), he makes some really nice SP called sneakiest petes. Great guy to deal with, great looking cues. I'm saving up for him to make me a custom sneakiest pete with an LD shaft. Hope this helps, and sorry to hear about your lost.

Leon Sly

JMO, But I second the opinion of getting a Leon Sly.
They play lights out!!!

If you're looking for a cheapy to fill the void, I too agree with the Players.
You may want to get your shaft tapered to your liking and get your own preference of tip, but once you do that, they play o.k. for a $65 cue.

Go with the SLY, you won't be disappointed.
