Why not get a stabilized piece?
There is a gentleman in Johnstown, PA that has an operation making impregnated wood for knife makers, cuemakers, gunstocks, etc. He has some really beautiful wood and a large selection to choose from. His work is breathtaking. His name is Nick Forosisky and his phone number is:

It is not cheap, but extremely strong and stable once impregnated. He has natural shade resins as well a some wild color tints. I can vouch for the quality. He has also been in many Valley Forge shows. There are dealers for his wood, but this is the actual man that does the work, and would have the most selection to show you. He can also impregnate your own wood if you choose. But not many can boast the inventory of burls and spalted woods that Nick keeps on hand.

Ohio's state tree is a Buckeye tree, not a chestnut tree. The Buckeye yields a nut similar looking to a chestnut, but it is not suitable for consumption. Deer and other critters may eat them when they are hungry enough. The buckeye nut cannot be roasted and eaten by humans. I wish they were the same though, as I could harvest tons of buckeye nuts, there are many of those trees near my home. And I love roasted chestnuts! WHen my father was a boy I understand that a blight hit the midwest and destroyed most of the chestnut tree population. Some new trees have been developed by crossing the American Chestnut with a European variety, which has given some hope of a return of that great tree to the USA.

Buckeyes are related to Chestnuts, but are not the same. Buckeyes ARE native to Ohio. I don't know about California.
Stabilized burl
I've bought quite a few pieces of stabilized box elder burl from this eBay seller. He will do special orders if you email him.
The gun stock guy sounds like a lead but it doesn't hurt to have multiple leads.

Buckeye is native to Ohio, and is also native to Cali. The really good burls are harvested in Cali, Oregon & Washington. I suspect there's good stuff in Ohio, too, but with the abundance of hardwoods, nobody even gives buckeye a second glance. It's pulp wood at best.
