Hi,
Ring work defines the cue maker IMO. There is nothing wrong with buying them if you please because there is a lot to learn about their application
and usage. Believe me you can buy rings, install them on your cue and still screw it up before the build is up. Experience is your best teacher.
When I first started making cues I bought 3 billets from Prather and used them on several of my beta cues. After that experience I started building my own rings that were more complex.
Today I build my billets and using my CNC for slotting the stitch groove geometry.
It is all a natural progression and there are learning curves and pitfall traps doing rings concerning geometry tolerances. With every new cue you build you will put another notch on your belt to the level you aspire to achieve overall and rings is a big part of that.
I would suggest getting 3 (Joint, A and Butt size) simple billets from Prather and get to work.
BTW, if anyone is interested in a benchtop Atlas Clausing Lathe dedicated for ring work I have one sitting idol in my shop since moving ring work jobs to my CNC. I modified it with a 5c collet indexing head welded to the head stock spindle and Rigid Router fixture for cutting ring billets. It works perfect.
If there is any interest I will post pics and examples of rings I made on it.
Rick
