Yang edges Reyes in classic

Yeah, but Yang must be mighty frustrated to be defeated in the Finals by another Filipino, Ronnie Alcano. Where do these Filipino players come from?! We're talking about the "Son of Pool" here, he of the impeccable jump shot, but this Alcano beat him. Of course, Yang scratched a couple of breaks, but still....
Just where do these Filipino players come from???!!!! I mean, are they genetically breeding them back there? Maybe we can get some gene lab to take a few chromosomes from Johnny Archer and mix it up with some DNA from Earl Strickland, Sigel, and Mizerak for good measure.

Congrats to Ronnie Calamba Alcano.
Renegade pool is huge in the Philippines. There are three huge sports in the Philippines. Cockfighting ( yes, it is considered sport there ), basketball and pool.

Ahh hell. I had something funny all typed out (at least I thought it was), but then had a sudden case of political correctness that made me delete it. Public forums. Pffft! :D

Ronnie not new.

Yang was Hill-Hill with Efren Reyes on the Quarter Finals and was Hill-Hill again on the Semi-finals with Gandy Valle. Perharps he just lost steam or as they say run out of gas from the onslaught of filipino players.

Ronnie Calamba Alcano is not new to pool. He's been around a long time. Just not that popular abroad, but is well known locally. If I remember it right, Efren Reyes mentioned that Ronnie was the best Rotation Player he has ever seen. Efren and Ronnie played even on Rotation and Ronnie would win.

Ronnie was based in the US for awhile and was on the Joss NE Tour for a couple of years. I think I mentioned this before on another thread that many filipinos based out of the country are now coming back under the wings of Puyat Sports. Alex Pagulayan and Ronnie Alcano are now under Puyat Sport. Who will be next, Santos Sambajon? :)

As mentioned by JoeyInCali, the 3 gambling sport in Philippines are Cockfighting, Basketball and Pool. They are available everywhere in the country, illegal cockpits (tupada) abound, basketball rings on the streets are setup and pool tables/halls in almost every corner.

Well, your analysis isn't really true. In Yang vs. Reyes, it was Yang who had the break in the hill-hill and he just ran out the rack for the win. There was nothing Efren could've done there...

IMHO in alternative break format, the breaker in hill-hill match should be lagged. With these caliber of players, the opening lag has too much significance because the winner has the break in the possible hill-hill situation. Also, they could continue breaking as normal, but a difference of 2 games should be needed. I don't like the idea, that by losing the opening lag, your chances of winning diminish quite a lot if the match goes all the way. It should be like in tennis, if the set goes to 6-6, the first one to serve doesn't have an advantage because they have the tie-break then. And if the match goes to the 5th set, they don't play the tie-break, but require 2 game difference to win.

What analysis?

I just mentioned that Yang went Hill-Hill twice to two filipinos before the match with Alcano and maybe that was why Yang lost steam or run out of gas when the match was with Alcano.

I don't see anything wrong with my statement and there is no analysis of any game with Yang against Efren or Valle that I made. My analysis was between Yang and Alcano.

I misread your original post... sorry for that :)

hi joeyincali, i think another big sport that you missed is boxing.

in the finals, if i remember it right, there should be at least two game margin for a player to win, but not exceeding a total of 13 won games for the champion. (this was the case last year between efren & jeong young hwa.) i think they should implement the 2 game margin even with the lesser significant matches. also, maybe they have set ceiling too low.

yeah, you forgot boxing....

isn't manny pacquiao as big as efren back there?

I agree, lead by two should be interesting....they do it for the championship but not for the semis

i don't know if it is still true today but for a time, from the airport you'll be greeted by the huge portraits of our president and efren. however, i still believe manny is more popular and more admired here. as in other countries, billiard is relatively a young sport. pinoys must have been crazy over boxing even before the thrilla in manila (an ali & frazer match).
