Your GO TO cues when money is on the light

Some of you have nice to extensive collections of cues,
some cues in the 5 figure range. What I am curious to see
is what your go to cue is when you have your
own money on the light.

Please understand I'm not directing this inquiry to nits with
10K+ cues that play twenty dollar one hole.

I go straight to either one of these, and ironically they are
the two least dollar value cues I own:

1989 Ernie Martinez (Showcase) tru-sneaky:

2014 Wes Hunter wrapless:

Wes made the joint protectors for his
and I asked Jim Baxter to make a
butt ugly set of JP's for the tru-sneaky.

I think Jim did a fantastic job

Does Not Matter.......

This likely sounds implausible to some readers but my answer to the question is any cue in my case.
It really doesn't matter, probably because all my cues have the same specs, joints, ferrules and tips.

I do have a favorite cue to play with, however, when the money is on the line, it does not matter which
cue I am using at the moment. I can and will play with any cue in my case, regardless of the bet amount.

I know all your cues have similar specs, but what about the different shaft tapers? Do you have a preference out of the builders in your collection? Also being that the cues have such similar specs if you were blindfolded would you be able to tell which is which if they have the same wrap? Just curious. Thx Tom

Tom......Great Observations & Questions

The tapers on the cues are the same on 5 of the 6 cues.......the EP cue is different. Yes, one could, or should be able, to discern a difference blindfolded, not saying you
could name the cue-maker. The balance and feel is slightly different for a couple.......obviously, the age/density of the wood can and would vary for the shafts, there's also
some minor variations in diameter, and let's keep in mind different cue-maker inventories were used for the cues.

The feel...the sensation....of the cue stroke in my gripping finger pads....is so similar, with my cues, save for one cue (EP), my performance doesn't improve nor
worsen with any of the other cues in my case. I play just about the same regardless of the cue. The feel can vary a little between the cues due to the intrinsic variables such
as the quality of ivory used, variations in wood, weight bolt type, balance point, etc. But as far as preferring to play with one cue versus another if my money is on the line,
which happens, whatever cue I took out of my case to play with, that's the cue I'll use for a wager......if 2 hrs later someone wants to play a set for money, I'll use the cue that's
already out of my case or play with the cue I did earlier that night. If I haven't played with a cue yet, when I open my case I make a choice.....sometimes it's a cue I haven't used recently.

My point is I do not have a go to cue for the tough, important match. I do have a cue that I'd rate as my best feeling cue but I don't think of it as a "superior" cue as my play is elevated
from using that cue over any of the others. Maybe my game just sucks or it's flat-lined......I dunno? What I do know is when everything is so closely matched, the differences seem to
become pretty minimal and having a favorite is more attuned towards which cue do I want to look at tonight. I guess that's because I typically lay my cue on the pool table, in between
racks, regardless whether I will be breaking or racking for my opponent. It pretty much comes down to I don't truly have a "go to" pool cue aside for perhaps sentimental attachment.

Cues

Good question but a tough question. For me it would depend on what game I'm playing and what size table. Let's just say if I was playing 8ball on a bar box that would be a different cue then if I was playing 10 ball on a 9 ft. Table. More of a low deflection shaft on the big tables and something with more finesse and spin on the bar box. But now you have me wanting to gamble, Heads !!!!

Thanks for the responses so far.

Part of the reason for my choices I believe is psychological in that
should something negative happen, I'm not at risk of damaging
one of the higher dollar value cues.

Or, if I get foolish enough to get my nose open in a bad game,
I cannot possibly lose too much (cue).

Lol, another excuse for Nick to post his 3 cues.

Here's my hitter. A little flashy, but the joint machining is the best in the world. I'm having him finish off a John David blank for me soon.

As others have stated, this one is tough. At this point I have whittled my cues down to ones that I enjoy playing with. Likewise, all of my cues now have a matching Predator shaft with the same tip. I really am comfortable playing with all of them. That being said, when I take a trip, it is my Dave Jones/Hager 1x2 combo that end up in my luggage.

I don't gamble much anymore because my back sucks and I'd might have to quit in the middle of a rack, let alone a set. With that being said, I really only take out a plaher, break & jumper with me at a time. So whichever player I leave the house with that particular night that's what I'd be using.

Go To Cue

Great topic Danny. My go to cue is my Lambros. It is the first custom cue I ever bought. Regardless of any other custom cue that I have in my collection or have held in my hands, if I have to win a game, I'm going down swinging with my Lambros.

I use old predator sneaky when the money is on the light lol

What do I know

I am rated 67. But whenever I say that I hear whatever how about at least 140.
Well what I think am 67 rated and what I hear I am to be rated if I ever show up over 140 is a bit of a strain on my brain but for the cash a broom handle might do.
And yes.
These.
Huckleberry anyone?
Nick :)

Along those lines, I have found that anything more expensive than my $1000 Schon has an effect on me, and not in a good way. Not the way that I play with the cue, but I have damaged 3 cues that are worth more than $1000.

I have a fireplace in my pool room that I literally never hit with anything buy my bumper with my Schon. But with the more expensive ones, I have put a big gouge in the butt of my Gilbert, a gash in the wrap area of my Kikel, and even put a huge gash in one of the shafts for my Ginacue. I was luckily able to sand out the gash without adversely impacting the play of the shaft. :help:

So yeah, for some reason....put a more expensive cue in my hands, and I am sure to damage it is some way. So I don't play much with the more expensive ones.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to send a few cues to get refinished soon. LOL

EDIT: I should point out that the Schon plays every bit as good as any of my more expensive cues.
