Your man in Manila

Jay, you got 40 minutes to chat before the Reyes/Orcolo match starts.
Are you doing the commentating? Who's with you?

Nick Halling from Great Britain, one of the top Brit announcers. We worked the Engert-Bustamante match earlier today. Francisco was sick and didn't have his A game.

They took me off with Jerry, because they said we sounded too much alike.

Well, if they wanted a distinct voice, they can get Pat Holtz to do the
commentating again!
:D

The action is at One Side, Rack 'n Roll and LA Club. People have invited me for later tonite, but after I get done I have to get some rest. It is a long day here. I also got an invite to play in Steve Davis poker game tonite after the matches. Probably a good game for me, all Brits playing Pot Limit.

And one of the local girls asked me to go for a drink with her later (with her friends). This may be my first choice. Ok, ok, I'm a dog. Í need to clone myself this week.

He just did the last match with Jerry. Good call.

Be sure it's a girl Jay! Have you been to the "Library"? You know what I mean! :D

Hopefully, those girls are FILIPINA lovelies. ;)

Hope to see you tomorrow Jay.

Got to work the best match of the night, Orcollo vs. Efren. Dennis got off to a slow start, scratching on the break and playing bad position a couple of times. That was all Effie needed. The crowd for this match was huge, overflowing the bleachers and the balcony. All of the Philipines stayed up late to watch it live on TV. The ratings were thru the roof here. Something like half the homes that have television were watching. This country is Pool crazy right now.

I walk out of the Convention Center and people say "Hello Mr. Announcer". Heck, that sounds better than Helfert. Maybe I'll change my name. Jay Announcer,,,,has a nice ring to it.

More to come

As you know the Americans stubbed their toes big time. They are not even a factor here. Earl is completely off the air, not even trying in his match with the Chinese guy. He just banged the balls around, and flew out of the arena. His days of free invites may be coming to an end. Looks to me as if his pool career is winding down. It was obvious he didn't want to be here.

The Americans are completely outclassed by the filipino and the Chinese players. Efren is looking good, but has Alcano today. And Marlon to follow. What a draw. The fans adore him and follow his every move. He remains gracious and humble, stopping to chat with all.

Made it to One Side last night. Alex and Alcano are playing on the first table, cheap $100 sets. Tyler Edey is taking on the "the Russian". This is not Stalev, but a young filipino who is half Russian. Rob the Russian. Bob Hunter is playing "Disoy", which means half breed. He is a mix of Spanish and filipino. Seems everyone likes these filipino women, not just me.

Alex and Ronnie give up the table for the big match of the night. Warren Kiamco will take on Kuo, the diminutive Chinaman, who plays lights out. This is a real game, for 50,000 pesos a man (that's $1,000). Warren takes the first set and I leave before set two gets underway. It's been a long day for me, and now nearly 3AM.

The filipinos only play Races. No Ahead sets or by the game. All matches are a Race To Nine or Eleven. I look around the room in One Side. More pool talent here than any poolroom in America. Edwin Montal and Bessio, the old timer, are forced to play on an outer table. The walls are lined with young (and not so young) filipino champions, just waiting to jump on someone. If I wasn't with Gene, they would be all over me.

Somehow I don't think my Bank Pool game would save me here. I have NO outs with this crowd. So I sit and watch and keep my hands in my pockets. Gene tells me that if Corey and Archer walked in here, they would be all over them too. I believe him. Tang comes in with Marcus. They survey the room, and I see "two finger" Jarry walk over and challenge Tang. He only smiles. Gene informs me this scrawny kid has beaten Tang twice already. UGH!

Alcano is inquiring of Marcus (Ronnie loves to stay in action). I only see the discussion. Nothing happens, and shortly after Tang and Marcus leave. No easy pickings here.

Heading for home.

Jay, excellent reports from behind the scenes & around the town there. I'm thoroughly enjoying reading this thread, must be a great thing to behold.

Kudos to you, sir (& rep points of course.)

Jay,
I've been following the tournament every day on ESPN. It is very popular here in Thailand (although our guy Tepawin is out.) I was looking for you in the crowd when I finally realized you were commentating. You are doing a great job.

I was hoping to make it over for the weekend, but I'm stuck here in Bangkok (not a bad place to be.)

Keep up the good work, & try to check out BKK on one of your Asia trips. I'd be happy to show you around the rooms.

I love to see a filipino Vs Chinese in the final.

It could happen. Of the 32 remaining players, eight are filipino and eight are Chinese.

Manila is a town that never sleeps, ala Las Vegas. Any time of night, the streets are full, and the little streetside shops are open. Food, drink and friendship 24 hours a day. Traffic laws here do not exist. A red light means slow down, do not stop. Every car fights for position all down the street. The larger vehicles have the edge here, but the cab drivers are particularly aggressive.

Every cab ride is an adventure. The most popular businesses are the money changers, four or five on every block. Slightly better rates than you can get in a hotel or restaurant. Poolrooms are everywhere! Large ones, small ones, good ones, scary ones. I like them all naturally. I have stopped to play already in the little alleyside rooms with two or three tables. Believe it or not, there are C and D players here.

I found someone I can beat here. We play for 20 pesos (about 50 cents) and I win six games. My big score of the week probably.

gotta go to work.

Thank you so much.:)

hi Jay! it's nice to hear you are enjoying Manila! =) i'm one of the many Filipino AzB members (more of a lurker actually :D ) who are delighted to have the pool greats and pool fans as visitors here in our homeland :D if you have time go and visit other parts of the metro (like Makati, the busines district) or the islands (home to the best beaches like Boracay), i'm sure you'll have a blast wherever you go... ;)

nice work on the commentating by the way... =) i just have to maybe apologize in behalf of all the Pinoy audiences whose actions/reactions are sometimes misinterpreted by some... we are just naturally very supportive of our local heroes and are very expressive as you may have personally seen! the gasps that the audience lets out whenever efren or django misses or the thundering applause whenever they do great is really 'involuntary' and not premeditated... definitely in no way an act against their opponents... believe me we do love them foreign great players as well (yes, even Earl!)...

anyway, nuff said... i hope you have a great time and thanks for bringing great news to the forum members around the world!

I love the filipino audiences. I think they are great fans. These are true lovers of the sport. My kind of people.

On the tourney front, I am most impressed with Wu, the defending champ. 17 years old and plays like a veteran. He is just mowing 'em down so far. If I had to pick one guy right now, Wu is it. Of course he has a long way to go and many great players remain.

Kuo came back to beat Kiamco last night. Finished one set ahead. There will definitely be action tonite. Players getting knocked out and being paid!

That's sooo un-IPT like Jay! :D
I'll reserve my comments about Wu later. His opponents have been missing
easy shots, and they're handing Wu easy outs so far.

Just worked an amazing match between Steve Davis and Jerome Pena, the young filipino ace. Davis had the match well in hand and almost gifted it back when he overlooked the two ball and shot the three instead. I've never seen that before.

It allowed Pena to tie it up at 8-8. Davis won the next game to reach the hill. Then we saw a comedy of errors in the next game before Steve was able to close it out. Pena made far too many unforced errors.

Ralf Souquet played brilliantly to oust the very dangerous Yang.

Efren and Alcano up next.
