Your Take On Sandbagging!

And what if everyone just stopped sandbagging? Would the handicap system work? would work much better

Do players that sandbag really influence the league win-loss results to the degree that teams lose positions on the final weeks of play? absolutely make a difference in the annual "cities" events (winners go to Vegas)
How does any team win any matches if the leagues are full of sandbaggers?
only need 1 well placed bagger per team to make a difference

Some leagues take more into consideration than wins and losses. It's not uncommon to see two APA 5s in 8ball have each game go 6-8 innings before a win, and after the match (on the practice table) not have a single game go over 2 innings......hmmm, must just be because of the pressure of league play. lol

Anyone who feels they need to cheat to win should find something else to do. Anyone who is caught cheating (sandbagging) should be banned...for life.

BCA has a point handicap system. You give or take points according to how strong the team handicap is. To sandbag will only hurt your team. There is no incentive to cheat.

And we wonder what's wrong with our nation. We got people who pretty much gloat about cheating in order to win at a game. Things have gotten so far off course, deception is "OK".

Unreal.

I sandbag at every opportunity.

Even doing that, it is sometimes hard to win. I am constantly running into better sandbaggers and that REALLY pi$$es me off.

The only thing better is beating a APA 7 who is so proud of reaching the 7 level. They really dont get the big picture.....

haha...............

It would, in a perfect world :) The apa system encourages sandbagging. Some are saying that bca system doesnt. Unfortunately, there is no bca league in my area.

Yes

Some sandbaggers sandbag better than other sandbaggers.

...... sss

Sandbagging

NO EXCUSE to sandbag. I've played in competitions for a long time and have always played to the best of my abilities at all times. Had a bagger on my team once and he wound up hurting us. I didn't play on that team again the next season.

Flawed handicap system...... I'll go with that, but if your good..... you need a handicap why? Play in a different division where you will be more evenly matched and play scratch. No reason to sandbag.... EVER!

Coke.... LOL!!

Sandbagging definition: a player deliberately plays worse than his or her true potential to lower his or her competitive rating, typically in order to play in a future event with a lower rating and consequently have a better chance to win a monetary prize.

I play bar box 8 ball every week in a VNEA league. Our team is currently in first place. What once was a good lead over second place has now diminished due to handicaps. We played the second place team last night and we were spotting them 7 balls a round and 28 overall total. Needless to say we only took 1 out of 6 points :(. I have never in my life considerered sandbagging but our team may have to too remain at the top. I am disgruntled. I wish the handicap system was more fine tuned.

For years I have heard that you need to keep your handicap low if you wanted to win. I did not want to believe it. Unfortunately it is a reality.
I feel dirty about it. If and when we start sandbagging I am going to let my opponents know what we are doing so maybe they will understand the steps you have to take in a flawed handicap system. This is probably going to be my last year with my current team because I will probably be moving away next year. We have never won the regular season (gets you a trip to Vegas for the VNEA International Pool Championships) and we are hungry for it.

My fellow AZers.
Have you ever been in a similar predicament due to the handicap?
What course of action did you take?
Do you look down upon sandbagging?
Coke or Pepsi lol?

AMEN!!! I couldn't agree with you more buddy!

The SL5 I shot two weeks ago ran the table (after my dry break), then broke and ran the next rack. He beat me 4 games to 3. I am a SL6. The previous week I shot another SL5 that beat me 4 straight games in 8 innings (and one of those innings he was kicking out of a safety).

This is the kind of luck (?) I've been having with my draws lately.

He musta needed the win, position week? I've seen an APA 4 run 3 straight racks of 8ball in a local Sat. tourney (on a Diamond bar box)....race to 3. And the very next Thurs. night (in league), I saw two way shots galore "missed" (but not a safety, mind you) by him, and even a couple of games lost to a weaker opponent on the very same table! please....most "know", and most figure that's whatcha hafta do!

You guys should read that Canadian forum. Someone posted something about watching their back for robbing a handicapped tournament as a 3 when he should have been a 5 LMFAAAAAAO. "Don't accidentally fall down a flight of stairs..."

I was just perusing the other forums and caught that gem.

I know that was a tournament and not a league...but still... I almost gasped for air laughing at that. For real people... some of these pool players take this sandbagging / crying-about-the-sandbagging thing WAY too far. Get rid of the handicaps...best player wins. Can't cry about that.

NOTE TO SELF: If I ever make it to Canada and play in a handicapped event... tell the TD to make me whatever the very highest is so there's no crying if an outsider like me plays well and wins (and so I don't get pushed down stairs while counting my cash).

I played in APA league for 2 seasons. The whole team was so fed up with all the sandbagging that's all we could take.

Spider - one league in particular is most likely to be the target of folks whining about sandbagging. You know which one, and most know why - a VERY low CAP on total handicap that can play on a team. Lose the cap, buddies can stay on teams together (instead of splitting teams and grabbing NEW players every other session), and there is MUCH less reason to sandbag. Problem is, the league WANTS teams to split, and new players added.....

that's why I said enough with that league a couple of years ago

Dave:

You know the old joke, right? Sandbaggers and Slinkies(tm) serve no useful purpose, but they both sure are fun to push down stairs! :D

I just started reading the Canadian forum.....those guys are nuts!! Really funny stuff...they take their pool serious....don't piss em off. Good stuff. I played on an APA team a few years back, coach say's "don't beat that guy" I say, "why". Coach say's, "because you'll go from a 4 to a 5". I say, "that's what I'm trying to do, improve". He tells me how they have to make their number each week ect.......doesn't make sense. How can you get enjoyment if your not trying to win? Actually tried to show me how to miss the eightball....come on..........it's league play!! Not the Color of Money!

I didn't read the whole thing so maybe someone said this but . . .

Huh ?

Isn't pool hustling what the legends of pool are legends for ?

So , sandbagging during league = Death.

Sandbagging 5 minutes after league to bump yer action = Legend ?

What if you sandbag in league so you get better action later ?

Ok, the conclusion I've come to is this:

Half of you are whiners, losers and poor sports. I wouldn't want to be caught dead playing just a single game with you by choice if I ever had to listen to this kind of nonsense around the table.

Want to know what all of those excuses get you? Confidence in the idea that whatever you are doing is right, even though you don't win. Maybe your shot didn't go because of the table, even though your opponent's shot did. Maybe the heavier cueball caused the spin to wear off, even though your opponent seems to be doing fine. Maybe it's the guy that walk in front of your shot 20 feet away. Maybe it is because you're playing a sandbagger!

How about just sucking it up and accepting that you lost? Or can your egos handle that? I know, I know.. most of you complainers are just too damn good at this game to lose. But, maybe, just maybe, it can actually happen once in a while.

Ok, children, have back at your crying.

I, too, find it quite funny that "sandbagging" is such an epidemic. Of course I realize that since I live out in the woods that I'm not sophisticated enough to recognize sandbagging, or the rest of my fellow hicks aren't clever enough to do it successfully.... Cuz I sure don't see any evidence of it in our APA league.

I've seen plenty of good players (for us, natch... I realize our players wouldn't hold a candle to you guys, heh) lose on a given night, with absolutely nothing to gain by losing. (Once you get to a 7 in our league, there isn't much chance of you ever going down again, so I've been told.) I've seen players that aren't as good as the 7's have a good night and be genuinely surprised and pleased by it. I may not know pool like the rest of you experts, but I do know people reasonably well, and I don't believe that I'm that naive.

I think that the sandbagging epidemic is much like our swine flu epidemic. Just a bit over-stated, perhaps... the few real cases creating mass hysteria. Oh, and it's APA, which makes it that much worse. Quite comical, this. I guess I'm happy I live out in the woods, protected from all this intrigue.

Exactly. It's like going to the driving range for fun and hitting balls out of bounds on purpose.
