Consider this fictional future conversation.....

Dear Mark:

Just in case you have not seen, I would like to invite you to check out this link.

http://pl.cuetable.com/showthread.php?t=620

Please note that the event was a joint labor of love from many great people from our sport. From what I know ESPN has been very helpful and cooperative in making this happen. While it is true that Eric and Mr. Massey are not world class 1.2 players at the moment, they have both displayed great courage to compete against the best of best, Semih. Because of this event, they have both decided to take up the game even more seriously and will make effort in making it known in America.

I have just read a few of your post and learned that you must be a purist who believes in good traditions. Look at the bright side, the show will be shown at 7 pm on a week night on prime time television, which already makes it a first for any billiard games. Furthermore, it will greatly educate more people in US about this great game we all love.

The longer I live the more I see that some people absolutely have no grip on reality. MBVL being one.

Eric you are doing a great job and pool needs more like you.

they just have limits on how much you can click rep buttons in a day... first one just means you can still rep people but you can't rep the same guy that you just repped recently, you gotta rep some other people and then you can come back to him. The second error just means you've reached your limit for the day but you can do some more repping tomorrow.

Can't wait to seeeeeee the tricksssssssss

This part of the conversation won't happen, because you seem to be the only jackass on the planet who can't figure out how to deal with the term 3-cushion being used to describe trick shots that are also 3-cushion billards. Your argument hinges on the unreasonable assumption that people can't tell these are trick shots, or don't know that trick shots are different from competition play.

When arguments are based on unreasonable assumptions, they are unreasonable arguments. When unreasonable arguments are brought up over and over again in threads where an up-and-coming player is just trying to bring attention to his work, then that's just being belligerent.

So take your belligerence elsewhere, instead of badgering an artistic billiards professional who chooses to be part of our community, and go look someone else's gift horse in the mouth.

-Andrew

Perhaps not the ONLY jackass -- Mr. Jewett seems to have had some heartburn about calling this three-cushion. Maybe you would like to call Mr. Jewett some names.

Since satire seems to be lost on you, let me ask some direct questions.

Why is it so important to the promoters to use the term "three-cushion"?

Would it be appropriate to change the name of that other trick shot show to "Straight Pool Magic" or "One Pocket Magic"?

If the sequel to this program includes Frederic Caudron, should it be entitled "Balkline Grandmaster"?

(Never mind the last one -- satire again.)

With respect to belligerence, you are the one doing the name-calling (look up "ad hominem") and telling people to leave the forum.

M,
Very entertaining scenario.

I think, though, that it has been clearly conveyed that ESPN has been involved at all stages during the development of the program. I can assure you that the people that I met from ESPN were quite knowledgeable on the differences between pool and 3 cushion; and have no misconceptions about the difference between competitive 3-cushion and the trick shots we witnessed.

It is popular to criticize ESPN for their coverage of the cuesports; but the people involved are NOT dumb. The conversation you suggest is quite entertaining, but is not in any way an accurate prediction of ESPN's level of understanding. They would be quite insulted if they cared enough about cuesports to read your "conversation" (but they don't:) ).

Some things to consider

We should b glad to get TV coverage of any billiard's sport.
We should b glad it is in prime time so more people can c it.
Any coverage is better that no coverage.
If is it exciting, more people might want to try it.

I'm sure pureist 3C can b a little boring to those who are not truely involved. This may not b pure 3C, but it is 3C shots. Why do u think it has never been showcased on TV before? I think most will agree that the average pool shooter in the local leagues is either playing 8 ball or 9 ball. These games are quick and keep the attention of the audience. No question, most have never even seen a pool table with no pockets. We could go out to the local APA/BCA/APL matches and interview 100 people and it is doubtful that any have even heard of 3C. I did just that last nite with 4 local teams (32 players). One player had heard of it, but had no idea what it was. This is showcasing some fantastic 3 cushion shots that will help bring all billiard sports into national attention. TV only wants to show something that will attract an audience and keep it's attention. This is fast moving and exciting. We don't c straight pool any more because of the length of some runs such as 100 balls or more. It's just one player shooting and shooting, again and again. It takes a long time and the average TV watcher looses interest as there is no "back and forth" competition.

" you seem to be the only jackass on the planet who can't figure out how to deal with the term 3-cushion being used to describe trick shots that are also 3-cushion billards"

You can add Bob Jewett to that list

Ok, this is getting out of hand. Bob Jewett is not only the USBA president, he is a wonderful ambassador for the sport. I don't think it beyond me to assume that he recognizes how good this could possibly be for 3c. I see the future of 3c being a bright one as it's popularity will surely grow and grow. You guys can disagree all you want about what Ira decided to call the show, but I hold him, Bob, Semih, and so many others in such high regards for their hard work to promote the sport.

I think he did what I did:eek: :o I was so excited to watch this show I missed the fact that it was August 7th......and thought it was on Yesterday....June 7th!!! Sooooooooooo I turned on the TV and what did I see? The 2006 WSOP:(

Hehe - that's funny. I posted an event in Facebook and invited all 300+ of my facebook friends, the other day. The event clearly says that the show as already been filmed and all I want people to do is WATCH the show when it comes on ESPN2. But, the event thing has a required field where you must put a location (as in, the city where the event will be held). People still keep sending me messages saying they can't make it TO the event because it's too far away, but wish they could BE THERE. lol It's funny how we misread things sometimes (or fail to!). ;)

Nah, he's not a jackass.

Because that's the difference between this show and the other trick shot shows they show. But it doesn't matter why it's important to them to use the term "three-cushion". What matters to me is why it's important to YOU to try to drive any talk of the event off this forum by thread-jacking every time it's mentioned to go on your tired tirade about how this is no more 3C than trick shots on a pool table are 1pocket.

Would it be appropriate to do your damnedest to alienate Mike Massey and Stefano Pelinga from our forum if they did?

I guess it would be just as appropriate, but I'm not watching. Balkline might as well be rohypnol for me.

Yes, I get satire, but I still argue against it when its purpose is to make a point that is simultaneously fallacious, irrelevant, and belligerent.

You're right, that was just me. But the fact that your repetition of your, well, fallacious-irrelevant-and-belligerent postings in the threads on this subject made me angry and I called you a dirty name does not change the fact that said repetition is harassment and is belligerent.

If you were single (I have no idea if you are), and I followed you around at a bar, and every time you walked up to a woman to start a conversation, I butted my head in and said "he's sucking it in, he's actually quite chubby; I just don't think it's right he's trying to deceive you that way", I bet you'd have some names for me by the time the night was through. If there were a bystander there at the bar who saw what I was doing and how unreasonable it was, he'd probably have some names for me too.

Well, I'm the bystander, you're harassing, and we all know that the trick shot show is actually a little chubby. I'm just trying to get you to leave it alone.

Andrew,

I asked: If the sequel to this program includes Frederic Caudron, should it be entitled "Balkline Grandmaster"?

And you replied: I guess it would be just as appropriate, but I'm not watching. Balkline might as well be rohypnol for me.

Now you're finally getting to the point of my objection. The trick shot fans won't watch the first show because they either never heard of three-cushion or they think it "might as well be rohypnol". Many three-cushion fans will watch and be disappointed that they didn't get classical three-cushion. You like trick shots, but you will not watch the sequel because the show's title is misleading.

Now suppose ESPN decides that the follow-up program will be classical three-cushion. The three-cushion fans who were disappointed in the first show won't watch the second; and the trick shot fans who do watch the second show will be disappointed because it didn't have enough "fancy" shots.

Now, you can call me paranoid (I am a bit), or you can say I'm not giving the viewing public enough credit, but I am sincerely expressing a concern.

Mark

Damn dude...are you butt hurt because you aren't on the show or something? It is what it is and is going to be fun to watch.
