The what did you get pool related for christmas 2025 thread

Wife and I bought dog toys for our pups, and an ashtray cupholder and seat covers for our Honda ACTY Kei truck.

Pool-related I gave myself the gift of taking something away: removing control of my shots. I have worked on relinquishing control of my stroke to my subconscious. Finished third, $, in Scotch Doubles 8-ball tournament/Christmas party Tuesday night (35 teams).

Got my @$$ kicked last league night (was beat rackless in 9-ball then got beat rackless in 8-ball.) Brutal. Embarrassing. Wanted to quit.

That was a gift in that it was a wakeup call to GTFO of my head and to finally learn how, once down on the shot, to think about anything other than how to make the OB. Not how my elbow feels, or my shoulder, or my grip, or my feet, or…..

Remarkable how well that works when I let it happen: no verbal thoughts, just imaging the shot picture and letting it happen.

Hopefully this is the beginning towards getting off my crap performance plateau and moving up…

How Often Can You Run This?

The way to do these drills is practice each transition on its own. And put the cb in a lot of different places for each transition. Otherwise, you’ll only get practice on the last half if you successfully complete the first half. And you’ll only get practice on the last ball if you successfully complete all the prior balls.

That is why it isn't a drill. It's a game or a challenge that has little value in practicing pool. A drill is shooting the transition from the 5 to the six a bunch of times from a bunch of angles.

James "Youngblood" Brown

well im going to throw a monkey wrench into this.

there were two james youngbloods that were near top players speed.
one was james javellina washington, youngblood brown. as least he used the brown part. to maybe keep people confused with the other.
he was the really good banker,
he hit me up to borrow money and it was just for change as i was stupid enough to give him a ride downtown.
didnt give him shit.
i think he was the one in the movie.

the other was james youngblood brown who i never met or dont think i did but played very well.
and what i heard he was a stand up guy.

seems many get them confused. i do.

Bergman will play WNT events in 2026

But in terms of Mosconi Cup prospects I do hope people realize he’s just a lifeline. He’s not the team’s future. He’s approaching 40 years old and isn’t going to return as a Fedor-level talent with continued upward promise. He idled away his prime years. We need some up-and-comers to really blossom to secure our future.
No offence to you, but we didn't loose the Mosconi Cup because we had old worn out players. We lost Mosconi Cups many times due to inexcusable mistakes.

Proficient Billiards Cue Repair - Great Service

He doesn’t let you in. I dropped off a 4 point black boar in person maybe 20 years ago and asked if I could see the shop. He said no, he doesn’t let anyone inside. Idk if he’s changed that policy since then.

I got the cue back about a week later with a flawless refinish and wrap.

I think it was a one man operation then. Probably still is is my guess.
He let's you in now but asks that you have an appointment. They have a little retail shop there with good prices.

James "Youngblood" Brown

I don't think I ever saw the movie, but i do remember Youngblood bragging about being in it. The poolroom is Charley Neal's on Crenshaw Blvd. in L.A. I was in there many times. It was one of the main black poolrooms in the 60's and 70's, along with the Krooked Kue and Tournament Billiards. There were a lot of very good black players playing out of them. Black Nate, Rags Woods, The Iceman, California Shorty, Cecil the Serpant, Texas (or Crippled) Shorty, Peter Gunn, Rush Out Red, Big Lips Donald, Tall Aaron and Youngblood. Redd Fox used to come in there from time to time to hang out and gamble.

I liked to go there because they were always laughing and joking around, telling stories about each other. I could play all the Bank Pool I wanted in there and I even won a couple of times :D. The original Fatburger was right across the street (you can see it when they walk out of the poolroom to the car). Most of the time I was the only white guy in there and they protected me when I left at night, walking with me to my car.

Years later, when I opened my poolroom at Hollywood Park some of the old time players came in to see me and that helped me to be accepted into the black community in Inglewood. I did great in that room up until Churchill Downs bought out the racetrack and everything else that was there. I had a new landlord and they wanted me out. That was my last year (2004) and my last poolroom! I'm a little too old now for a seven day a week job, so I guess you could say I'm retired. I'm living off my Social Security ($400 a month, lol) and a few small investments in real estate. 😉

Yep, i grew up in a "black" pool room playing full rack banks, good times.

What is a Shortstop?

A pool jargon list is available in the "misc files" page on the website below. Additions are welcome. There are also some other jargon sites you can find through google.

The best reference for pool and billiard terms is Shamos' "New Illustrated Encyclopedia of Billiards" which is a book every serious student of the game needs. You can get it for under $10 delivered from Amazon.
Dangit, I screwed the pooch again I reckon.
Here's what came up for me on Amazon. (I do bass fish though).

Custom and High End Cues on the Decline?

I would say custom and high end cues are not on the decline. There are numerous cuemakers both domestic and foreign but a much smaller number that have demonstrated that they make cues that play consistently well. Many of the cuemakers I know or sell have building waitlists that go several years. The market is dynamic and pool has been growing world wide. There are also tons of production cues of various qualities and prices.

People (and collectors) who value and can afford the cues from higher esteemed cuemakers keep the new and used custom and high end business going.

There’s also a certain amount of hype in the marketplace. I can’t understand how some new cuemakers somehow skip demonstrating they can make excellent playing cues but can adorn the cues with all sorts of fancy inlays and rings and suddenly ask (and get) crazy high prices for such cues. I’m not naming anybody in particular. It’s always let the buyer beware.
