Was the choice of gray just arbitrary, or do they actually think this adds value to their product.

probably because grey doesn't have a ball color that blends into it. but i'm guessing

I think shark gray is the easiest to see the balls on, but blue and green are fine too.

I doubt people would watch more or less based on table cloth color, however.
