I may be wrong but it looks like your 1st setup calls for something like 1/8 ball cut to make the pocket.

My 3C game is mostly about clocking and this semi-thin cut is one I'm working on developing more control/understanding. Work in progress but is now 1 of 3 standard hits or strategies. The other 2 are 1/2 ball and a hit that sends my CB perpendicular to a rail.

Once you do the work/study on Exact tip placement that gives you 1, 2, 3 diamonds spread when shooting diamond to diamond across the short table (perpendicular to a long rails) you'll have something to work with regarding the described hits.

I just discovered the 1/8 ball hit and the control I can get from it. It's re-ignited my interest. Getting old. Wish I knew more about clocking 40 years ago.

Simplified Clues:
1/2 ball hit determines CB 3rd rail contact point. 2 o'clock or 2 tips brings CB to 2nd diamond on the 3rd rail.

With a thin hit that sends CB perpendicular 90degs into a rail gives you your study results on tip placement. Kinda. There's work/study needed here since depending on needing inside or outside English, spin is added or subtracted from the CB.

Hard to describe the 1/8 ball hit since its work in progress but with the thin hit the math is whatever gives you 1 diamond spread across the short long rails will give you 2 diamonds spread down the length of the table.

With the 1/8? ball hit some of that calculation goes out the window. Sorry I can't explain this better. I'll just say I have better confidence where my CB is going, if I make the hits and my cue is straight.

Fortunately I don't have to worry about pocketing balls, just having fun with the CB is enough for me.

Re: model assumes...no change of shape at contact.

You science folks have a different set of know-hows, but I don't see how rail(cushion/rubber) compression could be built into a sim model with a realistic outcome

We have no billiard schools, no coaches for the professional level players and the Euro’s include 14.1 in their arsenal.
Johan Ruijsink specifically had JJ as Vice Captain to learn, implement and continue the things Team USA learned during the 3 years he coached them, winning 2 out of 3 Mosconi Cups.
I’d like to know why all those lessons have fallen by the wayside.

If I'm Team USA you have to be thinking, "Oh no, not more Filler!" And here he is, the USA killer. Teamed with Shaw, another one just like him. All I can say is, good luck to Shane and Sky. They will need a lot of it here.
