That table they are playing on. It sure seems like the balls roll a great deal. It looks so fast. Most shots they are stroking so easy. It appears to play so much better and faster than my Gold Crown IV. Of course we have been all through that many times.

I just noticed it's Andy cloth. I played a WNT satellite tournament where Andy had donated a batch to the TD and he had it installed on half the tables. The other half were 760, which was the normal cloth for this room. Tables were GC3's. Both cloths were installed by the same mechanic a few days before the tournament. The Andy cloth was faster than the 760.

You need 760 at least in your wet basement, not the 860 you've always had. Plus, a dehumidifier or AC unit to run all the time, not only when you play. A heater under the table will will also help.

tip technology - hardness at center different from hardness at edges

ive always did my own tips by hand. cutting down to size is the least fun and time wasted part of it.

if it fit my shaft perfectly then i would change more often and have it just the way i want it right from the start.

but overall i dont agonize over what equipment i am using as long as its usable. as i adapt quickly to whatever i use and that brings home the bacon.

Breaking - 1990s vs 2026

I have been thinking a lot about this lately and find it funny that this thread popped up.

As a fan and player, I detest the “modern” break. Do you have any ideas about how to bring the old power break back in 9 ball?
I think the only way it would come back is if it was ref rack, triangle rack, and players cannot inspect the rack. Then, gaps would be guaranteed, and where they were would be unknown. An Archer/Busty break would be the best chance for the player.

That is all extremely unlikely to ever happen.

Breaking - 1990s vs 2026

Tricky topic. Still, this is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison.

Thirty years ago, there was no break box, the one ball was on the spot, and the wing ball was dead, so players had a better chance to control the cue ball off of the break. As you note, they liked to squat the cue ball near the center of the table. They would love to do the same today, but ....

Today, in WNT play, which is currently the highest level of 9ball competition in the game, there is a narrow break box, the nine is on the spot, and the wing ball is no longer dead. To their credit, today's pro players have devised a cut break that enables them to make the one in the side with relative consistency, but the cut break comes with far less cue ball control. Today, the break that is in vogue in WNT play brings the cue ball to the rail and back through the rack area, so it is much harder to end up with a shot on the two ball after a successful break.

Hence, you are correct. Yesterday's players liked to squat the cue ball, but chiefly because they could under the old break rules. Today's pros, with few exceptions, have determined that they must cut break to ensure that they don't break dry, and in doing so, have ended up with far less cue ball control than their counterparts of yesteryear.

I'm super bummed too that I pay the regular subscription and they wanted more money for this. I didn't buy it. I would have definitely watched if it was part of the subscription.

Does anyone know the total standings? I went on wntlivescores and can't make heads or tails of it. It seems they have 5 or 6 events for this tournament, rather than one event page.

“ which in turn can make the game easier by gaining cue ball control”
Yes, consistency is key!

Easier? That is subjective. As always I think it is a semantic distinction.

If I was a 650+ it would make sense that I look to squeeze every advantage out of my equipment. If I was a 750+ I would look to what “feels” good and maximize my performance by removing any distractions. In other words, at that point I would think what feels good trumps tech.

But what do I know…

Fedor Gorst - looking for action in Louisville, KY tomorrow. If you could - would you?

I understand everyone's perspective - was just sharing mine. Granted Sky and Fedor are different people but I'm basing my expectation on what happened with one and I'd articulate that with the other if the opportunity came up. If I lost a a $100.00 set to Fedor and got nothing from it, no guidance/advice/thoughts post set and didn't think it was worth it, then I'd pull up and pay him $100.00 and walk away - so be it. Let's face it, $100.00 doesn't have the buying power it used to so losing it isn't going to break me or piss me off - it's just what it cost me to play. Now if I took as much away from that set as I did from Sky, then I'd play another on the same terms. It's all personal preference and depends on the situation and how it plays out, but I understand and appreciate everyone's perspective as no one's wrong in what they said.
For me the Gorsts, Kos and Fillers are an immediate attraction. Seriously, the current top 5 have visible skills that take them thru the tape time and time again. Woodward - who? Oi - who? On and on.

I know how pool goes. I have no clue how Champion goes.

Could it be said that with a shaft that has more deflection, probably the maple shaft, you can apply more torque to the cue ball with more action than a stiff carbon fiber shaft? A lot of people are so used to Wood, and the deflection it offers, that wood is there go to shaft. I have been playing with wood for a few weeks to a month now and I just like what it offers. Now I can play well with carbon fiber, but something about wood seems to make me more confident.
