Iowa Player had posted Earl Strickland vs Keith McCready the other day and I really enjoyed it. It made me think of this match between Earl Strickland & Jack Hines. Youtube will automatically give you the other parts.

Earl does a full cue jump shot in the second rack that is really nice!!

I have the Strickland-Hines match on tape. I won't spoil it for anyone who wants to watch, but the last few racks (part 7) are incredible.

thanks for the great match ray...just watched the whole thing....all i can say is wow! jack hines has a lot of heart.

I notice that he used a shorter bridge length back then. From what I can see, he didn't seem to have any limit with it. I wonder why did he change to a longer bridge length if things were working perfectly? It's great to see him play without all those gimmicks too.

Bump up for a great match.

The was before the eccentric Jack Hines appeared. No lizards on the light in this one. :D

Awesome, I haven't seen this before. Thanks.

Whatever happened to Hines? Does he still play?

Awesome match! I've had that on my iPod for a couple of years, now. I like how they shoot at (and nail) shots that no one tries in competition anymore...they just cut loose! The good ol' Meucci Earl.......

They could "cut loose" on the Gold Crown tables—not any more. :(

What I love most about this match is the place it was played in.

Starcher's on Arlington ran for over 20 years before the locks on the door were even tried to be used,at times all 24 tables would be going at 5am.

I grew up in Akron, but moved to Tennessee when my dad relocated with Goodyear in '84. This match was played when I was a junior in high school, and I played on that table during various family visits. They make it look easy, but that wasn't the easiest GC I've ever played on. At it's peak, every table in the place was recovered in Simonis about every 8 months, and was the purest environment I've ever encountered because the weather outside NEVER factored into how the tables played.

You had to walk thru 2 heavy steel doors to walk in,and these doors were about 10 feet apart,so they were only opened at the same time if someone held them open,so heat, cold, and humidity never seemed to change the feel at the tables.

Once I got to playing seriously,I went back as often as I could during the yearly family visits, and I swear this is the truth there were literally 40 guys around on a regular basis that were around Hennessee's speed, all in the same building at times. There were probably 200 people in the surrounding area that all played VERY strong. At Starcher's,gambling was plentiful,at all levels up to and including the very best on Earth.

They also sold cues, had repair service and a cuemaker that hung out there, good people behind the counter,1.50 an hour table time and I've never set foot in a place that had better tasting mega-hot WINGS.

Don't get me wrong,as far as visual effect a place like JOB's wins hands down,or my other favorite poolroom in the world,High Pockets in Memphis.

But the vibe quality in this place has only revealed itself to me a few other times in my pool life, the early Derby years, the original Q-Master in Norfolk that Barry started the U.S. Open from, and my early days at The Rack down in Memphis once again. You could just FEEL the place when you walked in,so thick it took a GOOD knife to cut it .

They also told their own story, with an incomprehensible collection of live-action pics on the walls from various tournaments, and later photos from The National Billiard News,BD,and P+B.

You could call at midnight and ask who won the Wed night tournament, the Thurs tournament, whatever, and they knew off the top of their heads.

Accu-Stats matches played constantly on a GOOD TV for the times. The only thing that could have been better about this place would have been modern-standard broadband internet,LOL.

Of all the pool rooms I've ever set foot in,that's the one I'd spare no expense to duplicate if I hit the lottery or something like that ever sets an unlimited bankroll in front of me.

I truly miss the place,Tommy D.

This was the greatest 9ball match of all times, that was recorded on tape,Jack Hines gave Earl all he wanted n then some,Hines was one of the greatest pool players that ever lived, under the radar,i still cant beleive that Jack loses this set, even after watching it 10 times!Hines probably is the best 9ball player ever, that wasnt well knowed!

Ray,
I had a buddy of mine put this match on a CD or DVD, all I know is it plays on my computer without any interruptions for me, I play it from time to time.

I seen that match when it happened they used to remove one row of tables (starcher's had two rows of tables running the length of the building)and set up bleacher's in 88 Earl was by far the fan favorite in that match. Jack made a return to Akron around 1994 playing better then he did in 88 I would have loved to seen a 94 version of earl vs jack but the only tournaments he played in 1993-94 at Starcher's was depicipted in the book "playing off the rail" and a shamrock shootout where he dumped the final since the local money line favored him so much. The person he played in that final posts here and in no way am I saying he was part of the dump. When Jack dumped it was usually a solo endeavor

Speaks a lot to the character of a man when the overwhelming majority of comments are about him being a piece of shit... and the person he's playing is Earl.
Good pool being played though.
