A regretful situation

I have some bad news regarding a recent cue transaction with Bob Frey. My awesome girlfriend for Christmas decided to get me a custom Bob Frey Sneaky.

This sneaky was supposed to come with

1. Ebony Butt
2. Piloted Stainless Steel Joint
3. Silver joint rings
4. Moori Med. Tip
5. Ivory Rambo Ring
6. 1 shaft 12.75 mm
7. Lizard Wrap
8. Shipping

This was to cost 725.00 total with shipping. Now I would normally not balk at that price for a custom especially one of this nature however Bob himself told my gf that it would be cheaper to buy through him than cuesnthings.com his current retailer.

Now here is what happened. When we received the cue in the mail after paying in full (before completion) it not only came with two minor scratches on it, it also came with a linen wrap. Now the scratches i could deal with because they were minor however the wrap is unacceptable however mistakes happen and I simply called bob and asked him to refund me 80 dollars. He than proceeded to deny that my gf ever told him that she wanted a lizard wrap and she specifically asked for a linen speck wrap.

Let me just tell you folks this did not sit well with me for two primary reasons.
Reason A : My gf calls linen speck wraps string and wouldnt know a joint pin from a ferrule.
Reason B : The math on the price simply didnt add up at that point.

So now after arguing back and forth it was agreed upon that Bob Frey would send us an itemized bill and a check for 80 dollars. The check never came. I waited two weeks than called him and let him know that i had not received it.

He said he would send another one and yet again another never came.

Now my gf called very angry and expressed this sentiment to him that she felt as though she had been taken advantage of and after seeing this itemized bill and looking at cuesnthings.com i am beginning to question as well. The math simply doesnt add up.

Here is my problem if you go on said website the cost of a stainless steel joint 5/16" 14 thread piloted is 65.00 he charged my gf 100.00 and the original price of the 3/8 10 pin joint without taking off the price of the 3/8 10 pin.

Now i know there will be some guys that will say im crazy and that im being horrible for this and there will be some who will agre with me however I am standing my ground firm on this one.

Here is the last kicker Bob Frey was very nasty with my gf and demanded that she pay for the stop payment fee on a check he clearly didnt send. TWICE!!!!!!!!!!

BAD FORM BOB

I am sorry for the length of this post however I wanted to warn future buyers.

BAD FORM BOB

Now after reading the itemized bill i am seeing he charged an extra 40 dollars for it being an ebony butt meanwhile again if you go on cuesnthings.com an ebony butt is 360.00 minus the 3/8 10 pin is 340.00. WHERE IS THIS EXTRA 40 DOLLAR CHARGE COMING FROM?????

I am sorry guys for the length I truly am I just hate to think that someone whom I once respected so well has consciously taken advantage of my Girlfriend whom I love a hell of a lot more than Bob.

Bummer.....:(

I am guessing you were getting a lizaed embossed leather wrap. A real lizard wrap would be way more than $150.

At any rate...sound like a bad situation. For future reference, it is always best to follow-up a conversation about a cue design with an email detailing the order, then both parties have a record of the order.

While I feel for you I think the problem was letting your GF order it. As you stated she had no clue about pins, wrap, or anything else on a cue. I don't know Bob, but he's been around for awhile and I have not heard a bad word about him. Johnnyt

I'm trying hard not to sound harsh. Really. You are an incredible....I dont' we can define what you are, but you are absolutely earnest. And honest. And in this world, that aint all that bad. So, after the molasses, its time for the sulphur.

Did I miss the fact that you didn't list lizard wrap in your post ? Point numba one....anyone can make a mistake.

Point numba two. Obviously, no one wants you to not get what you want, but we have an old Portuguese saying around here....."you buy cheap, you buy twice!"

That's exactly why you should have gone through Nusbaum. Because he's a stand up guy and he'd make sure you got what you ordered. That's his job. As well as his responsibility. Oh, btw, he happens to live right down the freakin road from Bob, so he's got better eyes on this deal that you. But you just had to save a few bucks. So, what is the conclusion here ? So sorry to say, this one is on you Charlie. For a $700 sneaky pete, you were saving a few bucks ???

Goodness knows that you lost about $400 as soon as you took possession anyway, because nobody buying this cue second hand would pay a premium for the ss joint, lizard wrap or the rest of the accutriments you put on this cue. Its a sneaky pete. Like a piece of $hit, you can wrap it in velvet and put perfume on it and it is still what it is.

OH, one more! Your girlfriend paid a lot of cash for this cue. I learned long ago from the classiest lady I know( my wife) that when you get a gift, you take it and shut up! If you want a long and illustrious marriage someday, when she gives you a gift and its "wrong", you say thank you and hope it works out after time.

There, I've vented. At the end of the day, guys like me (old fogies) have been through a bit more life than you, so humor me and consider some of these points. Despite the fact you are a nut, at least you are earnest, honest pool nut. But you need to learn from this one.

Its all about Karma. Fix this puppy and get yourself some.

With all due respect first things first.

Yes i forgot to mention the lizard wrap that it was supposed to come with you are correct. Now here is where you are not correct.

Point numba two and with all due respect you missed the mark completely on this one. It had and has nothing to do with price. We ordered the cue directly from Bob if you ordered a sandwich from a deli would you want to go through an intermidiary or right through the deli? Wouldnt it stand to reason that it would be smarter to order the cue right from the maker rather than one of his retailers?

Oh and one more I never said a word about the cue when it came my gf was extremely upset when she realized what happened. I was very very grateful for it and she felt she had been jipped so I decided to follow up. Plain and simple.

While I agree with you unfortunately my gf asked him to email her a work order or invoice or receipt with no such luck. He told her he doesnt have email and than she said to mail it and it simply never came.

Yea, 725 for a sneaky ( he like most probably dont even make his own blanks ) not in my llifetime... And when did sneaky petes start coming with a wrap. whats so sneaky about joint rings and lizard wraps ??? Just saying..

All the threads about cuemakers Ive scene on here sure make me happy JACK MADDEN is my cue maker. Not only does he make as good a cue as anybody :D, . If you order a Sneaky He makes the splice himself it is a true custom...Heressome JACK MADDEN service for ya. The first cue I bought from him was a 6 pointer (up and down) wrapless 1200$... He put a ring on it I did not order ( A bit on the large side we'll say ) I opened the box with him on the phone ( I was home waiting for the UPS truck ) looked at the cue was not happy ( neither was he I might ad ) with out hitting a ball with it I took it back to the UPS store sent it back ( like Bev said to do, She really runs the operation :D) 6 months later got my new cue just the way I ordered it. JACK MADDEN is one of my BESTEST BUDS :D:D:D to this day...

Sorry about your deal, I would just say she should have called JACK MADDEN :D

In truth I would really like to hear JP Nusbaum's take on all of this. Whether its good or bad.

I know that he has known bob for a while now and basically would value his opinion. If we did something wrong on our end i would love to hear it or vice versa.

I am not looking for REVENGE !!!!!!!!!! I just want an answer guys. I dont think thats too much to ask when your family is involved and you think they were taken advantage of for even 1 dollar.

Charlie

$700+ for a sneaky with a wrap, steel joint, and ONE shaft?? Does it even have an ivory ferrule?

Wow...... sorry to hear about this.....

It plays beautifully just like I would like it to but unfortunately that is not the point.

To answer Roscoe no it does not have an ivory ferrule.

Regrettable

Whats regrettable is when folks besmirch the good name of a well respected cuemaker over such a petty thing.

I'm thinking there just might be another side to this tragic saga.
