Just curious what all you guys think is better to aim to make on the break.
The 1 ball or the wing ball in 9 ball. If you had to choose. And why.

Depends on the game....9ball

wing ball....or 1 in the side.

10ball

there are 4 balls I try to make!

Ideally, you want to focus your concerns on the fullness of the hit on the head ball, and stopping whitey in the middle of the table. I break from 2 diamonds up, and 1 diamond over and tend to make the wing balls more often than not depending on the rack (reading the rack is an entirely different discussion). This tends to move the 1 ball towards the kitchen and puts the cueball in the center for a shot on the one.
You can look at moving the cueball across the head string if you are in a dead area, and arent pocketing balls. But to me, putting effort into breaking from the side rail, and pulling the one towards the side creates issues with the 2 ball. You have to look at where the 2 is in the rack and think about where you are wanting to move the cue ball to. This adds an extra element to the break that takes away concentrating on a good solid hit and popping whitey to the middle of the table.
Then if all else fails and you arent pocketing a ball on the break..... hitem hard and hope.....

It really depends on the table. I would say the wing ball is definitely the most consistent. That said, if it's not going don't be stubborn.

I remember watching a pro tournament and being amazed at all the pros insisting on breaking from the side rail and coming up dry on almost every break.

In 10 ball, I've seen Shane, Corey and Alex consistently make the second ball in the side pocket.

8 ball, same as above.

Rotation, Ditto

Straight Pool, the break ball

One Pocket, the corner ball, but not worth playing.

Seems like we're talking about 9-ball here, and if you don't own Joe Tucker's racking secrets, I don't think you can call yourself a real 9-ball player. It's not just luck, there is a method. ;)

The perfect 9-ball break for me is parking whitey and making both the near-side wing ball in the corner and the 1-ball in the side.

How do you "aim for" the wing ball?

Not neccasarely "aim" but which one should I concentrate on trying to make. I have to make slight adjustments depending on which one i want to make, occasionally theyll both go but if i had to choose I was curious which one would be the better option.

Yeah i was gonna put an option that took into account the 2 ball, but I just wanted to know which one most people focus on making. Placement of the 2 is a whole other topic. On my table at home i can make either the wing ball or the 1 but usaually not both. So I was just curious as to what most people are trying to make when they break. But of course this is all a moot point if I cant make either

Buy Joe Tuckers Racking Secrets. He will show you the gaps to look for that increase your odds of pocketing the wing balls among other things. He goes in depth about what gaps affect what, and where on the head sting you should break from to maximize your chances.
Buy it, it is money VERY well spent.

I am a little confused about this question. In 9 Ball the one ball has to hit on the break. There are no other options.

I like going for the wing ball in 9B

I like to try and play the wing ball. I think it is easier to play position for a shot on the 1B that is usually up table.

Ive got joe tuckers vid. The problem isnt making a ball. The problem is that I can make either one depending on where I break from. Every once in a while ill make both wing balls AND the 1. The other wing ball goes 3 rails under the stack and into the side after the 1.

I was breaking the other day and only adjusting to make the wing ball. Then I started thinkin about a match I saw with allison fisher and she was cutting the 1 in every time and squatting the cb. Made me wonder if I should be adjusting for that then. I was just curious thats all.

i try to hit the one ball full and try to stop the CB in the middle of the table whatever happens after that is up to the pool gods
