What makes one person play pool better than another?

Lets say both players practice about the same, read about the same, discuss pool about the same, go on the road together.........

But one guy plays 2 balls above the other consistently!!

Is it genetic? Is a propensity towards math and geometry?

Is it a carefree style vs a rigid discipline?

What is it?????

Help!!!!!

I'd have to say it may go back to previous sports and games that were played growing up. I'd love to say that the hours of PONG helped me with angles, but I think my abilities come from when I was with the NPPA (National Paintball Players Association). I learned a lot about angles and how to maintain my own mental fortitude when faced with a stressful decision. Before that, I was a goalie in Hockey. This is another sport and position that deals a lot with different angles of play. My daughter plays soccer and I helped coach her team a few times...another "angles" game...See where I'm going with this? I think once you find ways to associate pool with other sports you are familiar with, the better you play.

yes it is genetic in most cases.

one person probably has one or more of the following.

1)better eyesight
2)better hand eye coordination
3)better visual spatial acuity
4)better focus
5)better grasp of the concepts (you can read all day long and even have people who know show you and you just aren't capable of grasping the concepts)

It basically comes to down to several factors, most of which are going to be genetic.

If you learn from the same sources it could just be that you don't learn in the same way.

There are multiple types of Intelligences and modern IQ tests are segregated because of this.

Your potential in billiards basically comes down to

1)ability to learn and grasp concepts
2)hand eye coordination
3)visual spatial acuity (the ability to recognise objects positions in three d space)
4) and last but not least, in fact when it comes to consistency probably THE most important, FOCUS!!!!!!

It's the size of the other guys....

mental fortitude!!!! (Did you think I was going to say something else?)

Playing the right shots they way they should be played and knowing how to play better safeties and kicking better is just a start of why one player is better than the other. They probably posses a much better break than you and make better decisions, on the first play of the rack, than you do.

If equally skilled players compete against each other, it must be the GODS that determine the outcome.

Luck, good rolls, Happier thought and the always ever POSITIVE approach, can contribute to a 2 ball advantage especially if you keep jawing the 8 ball.

You just answered your own question.

It is it.

It can not always be quantified or qualified but it exists.

He has more of it, than you do. what pieces or parts of it he has is hard to say, but it is the answer to your question.

I have to agree there's alot to be said for the positive approach. Anytime I've ever felt positive or enthusiastic about playing i never seem to get bad rolls, or maybe I do get bad rolls but don't see them as bad because of the positive attitude.

I think it is perception, I have given this a great deal of thought over the years. I have also wondered why sometimes player with equal experience and abilities as another can never seem to pull off a win. In addition over the years I have seen individual with little experience and who have never had any training just seem to understand what to do and how to do it.

I suspect that the major difference on a level playing field with seasoned players the individuals who will rise to the top will be the players who can look at the table and see and understand how to get out. Many simple things that are easily over looked can spell the difference between winning and losing. I think when players hit a point in their game where they just can't get over the hill they need to look within their own mind and find a new way to look at the table and the shots available.

The truth is if you can't see the shot or the out, you can't make it and get out.

Then there is talent. That could matter.

Naaaaaaah, that doesn't mean anything!! :shocked:LOL

I know it was a funny, but someone said bigger.........(insert assumption here).

Let's say one guy would play for $1,000's and the other guy only $50 or $100? (before anyone draws conclusion, I'm not talking about me and Bobby)

Ok, yes I am on this one! LOL

Smarts

Assuming equal talent, I would not underrate the mental aspect of the game at all.

In fact, I have recently observed guys that I know play practically every day -- but they just don't know the correct shot, english, or safety to play consistently. I'm starting to realize that when you get to a certain level, the mental aspect and the ability to play smart is about 50% of the game.

Of course you need the talent to execute the shot...but if you don't even know what shot is best to shoot and "how" to shoot the shot -- you have no chance to be a great player.

Ray,

It's not the size or amount a Truck can carry, rather, the ability to consistently get the product delivered to the correct address!
