Here are some pics of my new Cuttlefish tip system.
The advantages are,
the convenience of changing tips.
You can try the same tip on different cues, assuming they also have the system on their cue.
See how your cue reacts to a particular tip.
You can compare similar tips with a different radius or profile.
Shaft is no longer required for a tip instalation after system is installed.
A playing shaft can be used as a break shaft.

Can this be added to any cue? i just bought a BlackBoar and i was wondering how much it would cost to change the shafts so this could work on them?

No offense to the system....but you would do this to a BlackBoar?! For sake of value of the cue and the shaft...its in my humble opinion that I would not touch the work of a master.
 
Cuttlefish Weight

What kind of weight does this system add to the ferrule?
 
I talked with Neil, at length, about this system. I was very impressed with the precision machining and the fit. The secret is in the cone. He let Corey Deuel hit some balls and then I spoke with him, at length. I don't want to put words in his mouth but he was also impressed with the way it hit. So, I bought a set, along with the installation mandrel and plan on building a cue for my own testing.
 
Isn't this just a different way of say SCREW ON TIP. I like the thinking outside the box thing but what is really the advantage to this besides screwing up some already perfect shafts. It's not enough that there are so many different materials for ferrules out there and some many different tips out there and blah blah blah.

The only true advantage to this I see is for dealers to allow customers to feel each tip before they buy into it. But even then every tip plays different for everyone and it will play different on every shaft.

Not only can dealers use it to sell a similar shaft type with a tip, but allows you the customer to find the tip that you like for that shaft.
As you say, every shaft and tip is different.
This is the only way that you can try several tips on 1 shaft and find the right tip for you at the time you are playing.

Doesn't that metal conical joint add a lot of mass at the tip and therefore a lot of deflection/squirt?

I think they would be great for house cues though... much better than slip on ferrules they use around here.

I am not sure why Neil chose the name Cuttlefish for his cues, but my guess is it is because his cues look a lot like a fishing rod. I might have went with Shark Catcher Cues if it had been me.

I choose cuttlefish , because they are the quickest changeing creature ,and my tip system is quick to change.
It is just coincidince that my cues resemble fishing rods.
But I have called the tip system cuttlefish and put cuttlefish on my cues with my tip system on it.


As for weight on the front end, the system weighs 3 grams, about the same as a conventional ferrule.

But lets look at this for a second. Lets say I want to try out a new tip you just happen to have this setup on the type of shaft I am using. I try it, I feel the hit. But nothing is going to be the same as my shaft. I see this and it reminds me of going to walmart and just picking up a sportcraft stick, just a little different. But in the end this is just my opinion I really hope this thing takes off for both our sakes then I will have more business putting a regular ferrule and tip back on someone stick that is even if it a reversible idea.
 
I too took a close look at the system that Ryan (Ratcues) picked up.
It is certainly well thought out, and well made. I agree with Rat that it seems to be a viable tool to directly compare tip properties using a test shaft. But as a player, I am not sure how well I would like the hit and sound of those little aluminum pieces, versus my linen or ivory ferrules.
Rest assured, Rat is going to fashion up a shaft with this system, and I am going to hit it. I will give it a fair shake, and post my thoughts here.

I too would like to know more about this system. I probably changed my main player's tip 10 times already, and I'm tired of doing it.

I'd love to buy screw-on tips and replace my tips in 2 minutes. But I'm extremely skeptical about the hit and deflection after adding that much metal at the end of the shaft.

Also, I can see how this system would be installed on a new shaft, so the diameter is standardized, but how is it supposed to be installed on existing shafts? ferrule diameters are never exactly the same, so unless several diameter tips are sold (by 0.002" increments for instance), I expect that the shaft will need to be turned down somewhat so the tip base sits flush. Or is it possible to order tips with custom diameters?

I'm curious about this tip system. If someone has installed it and/or uses it, please post your experience with it, especially if you've installed it on a shaft that you knew well beforehand, for comparison.

The metal parts would be fitted to each shaft just like a ferrule is fitted.
Each end piece would need to also be turned to the exact diameter.
However, once fitted only the tip part would need to be given to a cue repair person for installation of a new tip.

Like cheap cues there are cheap screw in tip systems out there.
This one looks like a quality product and for someone wanting the advantages it offers, should work nicely.
I doubt if tip mass is much different from a standard ferrule and couldn't be heavier than an Ivory Ferrule.
I like the one mounted into a shaft that has no ferrule.
It should have less deflection than the same shaft with a standard ferrule.

Neil, Please post a price as I too would like to offer this option to my customers.
