Non Gamblers?

I have to admit I've never been a big gambler, even back in the day I rarely played a set for more than a $100.00

I've always been more comfortable playing in tourneys where I can win a lot for a small investment, at one point in my life I always carried a lot of money on me but I was just never a big heads up gambler.

Any one else a non gambler?

I'm far from a big gambler. I always liked the saying "The best way to double your money is to fold it up and put it back in your wallet." I can't afford to gamble, but if I could...I still wouldn't. Of course, if I have a 75% chance of winning, then I might do it, but then it's not really much of a gamble. I've also played for drinks, but that's far from gambling.

i don't bet big either but tournaments don't seem worth the time. the few tournaments i've played in and won i feel like i played above my head and it would have paid off more if i would have just been gambling

Like, $100 a game? A set? What game? I can't judge you without more info.

I'm not a gambler in the literal sense. I don't care about winning money against anyone is what I mean. But, if the only way I can find a good game (competition) is to wager something, I will. Problem with me, I think, is I end up enjoying winning a little less by taking someone's money. I still try to win regardless if I'm playing for money or not, and NO, I don't let up because of winning and feeling a little guilty. I figure, if they are willing to wager money on a game, then they are willing to lose it....

I like said, I'm not much of a GAMBLER, but I'm so competitive, that if that's the only way I can get a matchup where someone will try their best to win....I'll post up. BTW, I forgot to mention losing....I HATE LOSING, and that has NOTHING to do with the money. I don't chase my money either; I figure out an amount I'm willing to lose, and once I get there....I'm done (at least for that night; I don't go to the poolhall all that much).

If everyone were as competitive as I am without having money on the line....I dunno, would pool be better or worse off? I know the gamblers wouldn't like it (the guys that'll bet on absolutley anything); since they believe the whole, "money won..." quote. Some care more about the money than the winning, I think. Enough rambling from me....

I dont gamble at all anymore. The guys at the pool room I go to are always trying to get in my wallet, and I tell em "Ill race you to 100 for $1.00". then when they say no, ill say, well, scared another one away! lol! I just love to play, and when I was younger, gambling seemed to take a lot of the fun out of it for me.

I'll gamble for the "5 dimes" or even the 3 quarters it may take to pay for the table.:confused::o:(

I dont gamble much myself due to the state of my game lol. I dont feel I have to gamble but I will if so inclined. I never go off for more than 200 bucks and that is only with people I know and usually end up getting it back. I do enjoy being in action wether it be backing, sweating, or whatever. I have a lil gamble in me but then other times I dont lol. I pulled fatboys famous one the other night when a guy came barking, he wanted to play race to 11 for a couple bills and I just looked at him and said, "I got a better idea, Flip you for it!!!" We both started laughing so hard we almost dropped the ball on the whole night.
Anyway in short, I like action but have nothing against people who just want to play. I will play anyone in the world for fun and give them my best game doing so.

"Ill race you to 100 for $1.00".

That's about the speed I like!

I don't gamble for more than a candy bar or a drink. And I do that because it's fun. I don't have much money to lose, and people tend to lose their minds when money gets involved anyway. So, I've always stayed away from gambling. Plus, I'm not sure I have the stomach for it.

I've heard the argument that money games help you practice under pressure. And, I get that. But for me, I'd much rather let the pressure come in a tournament where it's more about what I could win, rather than what I could lose.

i started gambling when i play to try to help pay my table time. i was playing 4-5 days a week 3-4 hours a day so it got expensive.

now it doesn't really feel right playing if you're not betting a little something. what goods winning if you don't win anything

I don't gamble at all really, just don't have the desire to. I play because I love playing and I don't need to put money on the line to make it more interesting for me.

Then again I suck too so maybe if I was a better player and stood a chance at actually winning something I would feel different.

It is all perspective, the amount of money and the amount of pressure is directly proportional to each individual and his bank roll. If I have 10K in the bank then a $100 set doesn't carry as much stress as a $1000 dollars set a guy with 10 Million in the bank can play for 10K a set and it is minimal stress. I think it is about finding the set up that one believes brings out their strengths when I played and looked for gamblers I was most comfortable in my mind at either $20 a game or race to 3 for $100 and freeze $500. By no means are these big numbers but if applied correctly in accordance with the environment and the opponent they were profitable. The speed of play wasn't determined as much by the amounts as it was by my belief that these scenarios were my zone, therefore I played with more confidence. It really is a way that I found to play confidently in my own mind. I believe that I play strong in big tournaments and not so good in local tournaments and subsequently that is true I am the same player I just don't trigger my best game in local tournaments. So it comes down to your beliefs of where you play strong. I have never met a real good pool player that did not believe that he was a real good pool player.

What goods hitting a 3 or dunking in basketball, or hitting a homerun in baseball if you're not getting paid for it?? How about a great round of golf, or beating a competitor in tennis, bowling, ping pong, whatever without "something" on it? Some folks don't need monetary gratification to feel good about a win....(but admittedly, more folks in the poolrooms feel the way that you do, than not).

this is kind of funny to me because i don't do any of the other things on your list.

making the 9 on the break feels great when you're playing for fun. but if you're playing for 100 it feels even better

I believe that, but not sure if not playing anything else competitively has anything to do with liking to gamble. I have friends that played sports at a very high level (college, and professionally) that HAVE to bet on anything to hold their interest in it. I've just never been that way. Like I've said, I don't mind wagering really, just never felt it was a necessity like some do.

I play golf with a weekend group (16 of us) that everyone throws in $20 and after it's over divvy it for for skins, greenies, etc. If I had to guess, I'd say 4 or 5 of them wouldn't play in our group if there weren't money on it (they'd look elsewhere). I GET it, just don't need it for me to want to win.

I started gambling at a very early age. My Dad had an ice and coal business and booked bets at all the bars, fish markets, ant meat stores he served. He also ran a card game out of the house a few nights a week. We had one of the first TV's on the block and every Friday night there would be a dozen people betting on the fights and shooting crap.

My first big hustle was when I was ten. Kids use to bet their baseball cards by scaling them against a wall. Closest to wall took all the cards scaled. A leaner was double pay. I would wet to tips of my card so it hit the wall and the corner buckled making it drop straight down the wall. I had cigar boxes full of cards. If I still had them I'd be rich. Johnnyt

I don't gamble much at all. Heck, I hardly ever leave the house to play pool anymore. Having a table here at home has saved me more than I could ever win gambling.

When I was college age my best friend and I raced to 11 every day for one dollar, it was a major rivalry and that dollar was a huge bragging point for the winner.
