Need help with Earl's phrase interpretation

After the last match of first day during Mosconi Cup 2008 held at Malta, Johnny Archer and Earl Strickland were interviewed. And Earl said something I need to understand in order to put it right for my local audience. He was talking about how bad jump sticks are and mentioned the pockets were too big, saying he is playing on a home table with 3,5" pockets. I'll tell you what, what the greatest players in the world should do is go to a fight by ten. Do you want to see real pool?

What does he mean to say here? Playing on a 10ft table? 10-Ball? Or did I mishear something at all? If you remember this interview or even have it handy please clarify this to me.

He practices on a 5 x 10 table with 3.5" pockets. He thinks that this will make the game harder and that only the best would be able to run out. I hope that helps
 
Here's one. A snooker table is usually 5-by-10. :wink:

However, there are also 6-by-12 snooker tables too! :grin-square:

Talk about a lot of green! :)

Poor Earl. His emotions always seem to get the best of him. If he can't win on a 4 1/2 x 9 does he really think playing on a 5 x 10 is going to help him? Yes he is an amazing shot maker. Yes he has dominated the sport for a long period of time. He needs to realize that he is not the same Earl that he was in the 80's and 90's. Lose with some pride. Don't get me wrong he is an amazing player to watch when he is in gear. The way he just approaches the shots nonschalant and puts them in with relative ease is beautiful. I don't like how he keeps bashing jump cues either. Jump cues add another aspect to the game. You dont hear Efren cry about jump cues. Why you may ask? Well because he can kick off 3-5 rails, pot a ball and get out. I do love the passion he has for the game though. I think his time has come and gone in the pool world. Maybe someone else should take his place at the Mosconi Cup if they want a solid chance at beating the Europeans again. Maybe Stevie Moore? Just my 2 or 3 cents.

Didn't Earl win over Drago and lose to Mika ? I think Earl can still play with
any of em. Just imagine if you had won the titles Earl has as many times as
he has . People would tend to have higher & higher expectations and you
would also of yourself . Then you realize as much talent as anyone can have
we all hit a slump and of course its magnified by your expectations as well
as those of others .Man it would be tough to turn that around but I believe
Earl can and will one of these days.

I also think he has it in him to win big again. I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I really think that if Earl can get his head on straight again he could win a couple more U.S. opens and World Championships each.

Guess i'm real ole school. I dont think jumping should be allowed, especially in tournements. But i'm not so bull-headed i dont use one if they are allowed.
 
I think he said 'the greatest players in the world should go pay my rent'
or it might have been 'pitch my tent' I'm not sure.

I believe this is where he said "you want to see some players sh$t themselves?" Of course the crowd didnt care much for that.

And I think he hates jump cues so much because he could jump VERY well with a full cue, this gave him an edge over most players. The jump cue took something that a few could do well and made it so easy that beginners can now jump with ease.

yes, I just didn't continue the quote as it is irrelevant here ;) Well, provided there are not so many pros in the world who practise on a 10-footer I believe Earl was not far from reality about beating the $h!t out of the opponents... On 3,5" 10-footer.

Yeah he did win over Drago but Earl really brings the team down, intentional or not. All the other Americans were in the arena watching teammates when they completed their matches but Earl never did. He hardly did anything with the team while in Malta and frankly, exhausted the other players, some seemed to stay out of the practice room with him just to keep their heads in a good mental place.

And when he would say offensive things on TV he would be reprimanded by the tournament promoters and his mood would only get worse. After the "everyone would sh$t themselves" comment, he refused to speak to anyone the next day, teammates included.

But I will say that I believe these antics are why he is invited back every year and I think he knows that, there is a method to his madness.
