OMFG!!!!

Worst thing ever happened.

I've been playing fulltime with my Predator BK2 shaft w/ Phenolic tip... I'm not sure how many of you read any of my posts but I won't rehash how I can to end up playing with this even though I have a Z shaft, OB1, and several other cues I could play with... But, I had been playing very well with this shaft giving the 9ball ghost a run for his money many times and generally playing pretty strong. (for me)

IT BLEW UP!!!!!!!!!! Literally.

I'm playing a set Saturday night with a friend, He's in stroke, I'm in stroke just running racks... which as any of you know when 2 players are both "on" and totally zoned in, it's a great feeling... anyway...

I go to break and I lay into one... BOOOOOOM!!!!!! The joint exploded. not cracked, exploded. as if you put a tiny bomb inside the pin joint. BOOOOOOOM. I'm not sure how this could possibly happen... The guy playing with me (and I) have been playing for a very longtime... and neither of us has ever seen anything like it.

I am beside myself. My playing cue & break cue both dead. I had a long post written out, then my CPU crashed (but unlike my cue, it came back up :crying: ).

I'm screwed.

Someone on this site lambasted me just last week for suggesting that breaking with your playing cue is not a good idea.

Sorry about your cue but if this is the worst thing to ever happen then your doing ok. I'm sure you'll find a replacement and get right back at it.

Actually, he's playing with his break cue shaft, and players cue butt. It's like double dip damage that must have Dawg wanting to roll up in a ball and cry for a week. I mean, that seriously has to suck for the man.
 
Sorry for your loss

Had it happen to me once. Breaking with my playing cue, 314 shaft on a Meucci butt. Broke a rack of 9 ball and the butt exploded near the joint. Made such a loud noise that people were looking around for the gun!! I don't break with my playing cue any longer.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this happen? All I can think is maybe because I play so much and break pretty hard (20+ hours week) that maybe inside the joint the laminated pie pieces that predator shafts are made with started losing their structural integrity (tiny fractures inside the shaft?) or the glue started separating inside the joint and then that one break was the straw the broke the camel's (or predator's) back ???

I break with a BK2 and have been known to go ahead and lazily shoot a shot or two before walking back to get my other cue. I don't have a problem making balls with it, but HTH can you put up with the **CLANK** **CLANK** **CLANK** from the phenolic tip?!?!?

Hope you can find another BK2 shaft...they do pop up for sale every once in a while. Good luck!!!

Bottom line - You should be able to break with a well made cue. I'm from an era when we didn't have break cues. We broke (hard) with our playing cues. I never had one break on me. The worst that happened was the tip mushroomed out and I had to reshape it.

I break with my playing cue playing 8 ball and 9 ball and 10 ball. No problems here.

Bothered me for a bit. The trade off of hearing that noise (and going through a full cube of chalk every session)vs. the multiple balls I picked up was a small price to pay.

re; buying a new one... Dawg iz teh broke. Dawg jr. at home needs to eat. I'm already looking at selling a few pool related things to make ends meet this month.

Sorry if I didn't explain clearly, it shattered violently at the joint. It had a stainless steel, uni-loc joint... It blew up right above the joint on the shaft side. By "blew up" I not only meant the amazingly loud noise it made when it happened... but the fact that it mushroomed out on all sides.
