I spent nearly ten days all told in Vegas this trip, with a quick jaunt to Monterey, CA to deliver six pool tables. Max Eberle accompanied me on this overnight adventure and we hopped a plane from San Jose the next day to get back home.

Once again the Tar Pit was the place to be if you wanted to see some great players getting it on big time. Most of the time Chris Bartram was the man in the middle, betting with both hands at every opportunity. Chris really stands out among the money players in America today. He is ready to go anytime, anywhere. When he woofs, he ain't kidding.

Darren Appleton won back the 20K he lost to Dennis Hatch in record time. Within a week he had won the World Pool Masters and the 20K first prize. A very tough one to win, with the ultra short 'Races To Eight' 9-Ball matches.

In contrast the Predator 10 Ball had very competitive 'Races to Ten' 10-Ball matches. The other big difference was the shot clock. In the Masters players got 40 seconds with one extension per game for an additional 40 seconds. In the Predator the players got 30 seconds with a 30 second extension. That extra ten seconds is HUGE! It allowed the players a margin of comfort. I think this may be the best number for a major event. I liked the 40 second clock. I thought it worked quite well. And it would be even more important in a game such as 10-Ball. That extra ball changes everything! Longer racks, more strategy.

The only disconcerting thing was the switch to short races in the televised matches. The Semis were a Race To Seven and the Finals a Race To Eight. All good matches but they seemed so brief after playing Races To Eleven in the previous two rounds.

Allison, Jasmin and Yu Ram reaching the final 32 was very noteworthy. 112 players started this event and it took three wins to get to the final 32. You had to beat good players to make it. Once again these three ladies proved that they are competitive with anyone.

Pool is alive and well with thousands of players playing this past week. Attendance overall was only down 200 players, not bad considering the Swine Flu scare. And I didn't hear about anyone getting sick either.

Thanks to Mark Griffin and his vision, the BCA tourney is looking more like a "must attend" event. It's fun, exciting and not so expensive with lots of prize money to be won. I used to not relish the idea of playing Singles, Doubles and Team events, but this year I wish I had played in at least one tourney. Maybe next year. In truth I was busy with my book every day.

It was a blast to walk down the hallway and have someone stop me and ask if I had a book with me. Of course I always did. And so many people told me how much they enjoyed reading it. Every time someone told me that it made my day. That is the purpose of writing anything, to please your audience. Best of all the players seem to like it too. Jeanette gave me a big boost at Robin's booth, plugging my book. Of course, everyone that was there wanted to have their photo taken with The Black Widow herself. She is triple cool with her fans, and they love her.

I wish I could have spent more time in the Tar Pit and got on the mic, but it just wasn't possible this trip. I did get to do one match with Don Akerlow and his OnTheBreak News. He was very cool to work with, a pretty sharp pool guy. Don knows his stuff. And puts out a great newspaper too.

Alex is the class clown, cracking everyone up wherever he goes. He has more energy than the average eight year old, always jumping and leaping rather than walking like a normal adult. Alex is the Peter Pan of pool. And he plays okay too!

The most impressive player I saw all week. Yu Ram Cha! No telling how good she is going to be. No one since SVB is improving as fast as her. She has certain intangible qualities that could make her the best women player ever. That is, if she continues to develop them. She has a great mind for pool, a terrific stroke and Zen like focus. Not quite on a par with Mr. Wu yet, but getting there.

Ralf is simply Ralf, the greatest tournament player of the last 10-15 years. After his astonishing upset loss, some people were writing him off. Being the champion that he is, he dug down deep and pulled off win after win against tough competition to reach the Finals. Only a great champion like Dennis O. could finally sideline him. I love watching both these guys play. It is pool at its best, played by MASTERS! The accurate shot making, the pinpoint control, the superlative strategy. All this and more flow from the cues of these two brilliant players. After all these years, I still love to watch great pool and I saw quite a bit this past week.

The match between Alex Pagulayan and Karl Boyes, with a TV round berth riding on it, was a crackup. When Alex chuckled after his own mistakes, he would look Boyes in the eye, and Karl, seemingly prompted to do so, would laugh with him. It happened twice. On each occasion, Alex next remarked to Karl "so you think that's funny?", momentarily making Karl uncomfortable, but, in each case, moments later, Alex laughed and smiled again at Karl to break the tension. It was a great hookup, as Karl, more than willing to be on the receiving end of Alex's humor, also has a ton of personality.

Okay, a little more. I do get tired every afternoon since I rarely sleep more than few hours at night. I was staying miles away from the tourney at Fatboy's pad, so I needed someplace to get some rest. SJM to the rescue. He gave me his room key and said go up there and relax. Thanks Stuey!

After the Predator ended Cindy Lee took the whole crew to the Wynn buffet for dinner. Man, all that good food. Naturally I overate. Scotty got on my case for something I said on here about beating him years ago. He had forgotten when he first came out to L.A. I gave him the eight and won a few games. That was many years ago and he said I had been woofing at him online. He asked me if I wanted to play some One Hole or Banks.

At that moment I really didn't want to play since I was so full. I think Scotty knew that too. But I finally told him if I said that I meant it. We could go right now to Eric's pad and plays some on his Gold Crown V. I called Eric up and he said come on over and bring the whole crew. So off we went, two cars with about ten people. We only stopped at the Riv for Scotty to pick up his cue.

Into the poolroom immediately on arrival, Scotty got his cue together in record time and was ready to play after a couple of warm up racks. I hadn't hit a ball in ten days, but no matter. He asked me if I wanted to play One Pocket or Banks. I told him either one was okay with me. Now he racks up nine balls. What's up with that I ask him? Short Rack Banks is his answer. I like it even more now. He's playing to my strength.

He asks me what I want to bet and naturally I turn it around and ask him to name the bet. He says how about thirty a game. Fine with me and we flip for the first break. I win the first two games but they're close. He then wins game three and tells me, "You got me for life at this game." Cool with me. So we're in it for the long haul. I like that. I can get down on my belly and plays some real pool. In the next game Scott comes up empty on his break and I hit him with a neat little four pack. All good banks by the way, no short cross sides or cross corners. One more inning and the game is over 5-0. Scotty unscrews, two games loser. What happened to, "You got me for life" I ask him?

His response is "Let's play some Ring 9-Ball now." I shouldn't have let him off the hook so easy but I did. So now, Scotty, me and Justin play ten a man. And Scotty wins his money back. I don't think Justin won a game. I know I won the last game and came out ahead for the night, maybe $40 or $50. I asked Scotty when he wanted to play some more heads up. I only got a smirk in reply. Well, I guess I just have to come on here and woof a little more.

I did tell Charlie and Yu Ram they were barred. Although I offered to play Yu Ram some One Pocket or Banks. With a little coaching she would probably kick my ass at One Pocket. But Banks is another animal. You just have to feel it and I do most of the time.

Great post, Jay. I can personally attest to how hard you worked all week. It's great to relive some of the experience through your post.

I have to ask, in reference to the 30 second shot clock at the Predator, I assume you are referring to the semis and the final only. I personally watched a few matches prior to then that no way could have been subject to a clock.

The Tar Bar was action packed for sure. i4pool and myself were playing on the table right next to the Oscar D. vs. J. Morra sets. I'd say we had pretty good seats for that one.

Have a safe trip and great time in the Philippines. I'm cleaning out the garage so let's definitely continue our Vegas conversation when you get back ;).

We could put any match on the clock that we felt was running too slow. As it turned out, only a few matches required the shot clock. In the TV matches, the shot clock was an integral part of the show. The WPBA does much the same thing in their events.

Yu Ram Cha in her match with Shane had one shot where she was shooting downward over another ball with the crutch bridge turned vertical and still needed to draw back 4 inches for shape; you were called over to watch it. I thought that particular shot showed remarkable composure given the pressure of the moment and the precarious bridge position especially given her diminutive stature. I think she had to position her body to look at it sideway too ?!

We were playing fouls on all balls, so if she touches anything with the bridge it's a foul. I'm convinced this is the best way to play. It eliminates all the fuss over moved balls. You move any ball it's a foul. Pretty simple.

Thanks Jay for the thread Dennis O is amazing having said this most of here know that the roles could have been reversed and Ralf could have kept Dennis in his chair like he did to his earlier opponents. I could not help but think how physically and mentally draining a tourney like that must be. To me it seemed like doubt might have crept into the bullet proof mind of Ralf right after his first mistake. Hats off to both these guys for being as tough as they are. And hats off to everyone that worked to make this event free to just about everyone who had a PC and the time to watch it.

I'm going to get qa basket ball hoop set up, that could be fun. my $$$ is on JA for free throws. Personally I cant hit the back board with a basketball.

We took some great pics that nite too, when I get some I will send you a few Jay to post here. I was having a bad hair day so i'm not in them.
