Don't know what got into me -- maybe a tiff with Mrs. 9BP -- but I headed out the door this morning with a cue under my arm and skip in my step.
After a good breakfast, I headed to the old Family Fun Center in west Denver, or, more properly, Wheat Ridge. It's Denver's most legendary hall, and although it's hit hard times recently, I'm still drawn there like a moth to a fly.
The guys who've darkend the doors are legend -- from Buddy Hall on down. Among the local greats who cut their teeth here were Andy Hudson and Bill Stroud.
Most of their old Gold Crowns have disappeared, but eight remain. I rented one in the corner for the astounding price of $5 for all I could play from 10a to 4p. Whadda deal.
Also got to clock some of the local hot sticks playing there today, a couple of names that I recognized. But I got not offers for a game, made no offers, and left happy after about four hours.
Later I found myself at happy hour at the corner tavern. Held the table for five games, lost in the sixth. A decent showing.
And now I'm hanging in my basement banging balls while watching the Rockies battle the Astros. And Mrs. 9BP sheepishly brought down some dinner, some I guess I'm happy.
For anyone wondering, retirement is by far the best gig of my life! Tomorrow I go fishing.
