Went on a pool orgy today

Don't know what got into me -- maybe a tiff with Mrs. 9BP -- but I headed out the door this morning with a cue under my arm and skip in my step.

After a good breakfast, I headed to the old Family Fun Center in west Denver, or, more properly, Wheat Ridge. It's Denver's most legendary hall, and although it's hit hard times recently, I'm still drawn there like a moth to a fly.

The guys who've darkend the doors are legend -- from Buddy Hall on down. Among the local greats who cut their teeth here were Andy Hudson and Bill Stroud.

Most of their old Gold Crowns have disappeared, but eight remain. I rented one in the corner for the astounding price of $5 for all I could play from 10a to 4p. Whadda deal.

Also got to clock some of the local hot sticks playing there today, a couple of names that I recognized. But I got not offers for a game, made no offers, and left happy after about four hours.

Later I found myself at happy hour at the corner tavern. Held the table for five games, lost in the sixth. A decent showing.

And now I'm hanging in my basement banging balls while watching the Rockies battle the Astros. And Mrs. 9BP sheepishly brought down some dinner, some I guess I'm happy.

For anyone wondering, retirement is by far the best gig of my life! Tomorrow I go fishing.

sounds like a great day!

Sounds like a great day! There are only a handful of people that have had "jobs" that were so much fun that I couldn't see them retiring. UJ Puckett comes to mind. Fish all morning on the lake, fish all evening on the pool tables. :D :D :D

No water boarding for you today??? :D

Wanna play some?

Couldn't fish today, so the pool orgy continued. Played in Downtown Denver at an upstairs joint called Wynkoop Billiards, where, incredibly, you can play for free from noon until 4p. Wynkoop is a terrific pool hall, open for about the last 20 years, and Melissa Little is the house pro here. I don't get the impression that's it's a players' room, more of a date place, but the equipment is beautiful and well worth checking out.

Played in the corner on an ancient Brunswick Ventura table, surely made before I was born, which would be pre-World War II. Terrific table, made me think that I'd like to hunt one down for my basement game room, rather than buying something new or sinking dough into improving my present table.

Wynkoop also is interesting because it was opened by Denver's mayor, John Hickenlooper, after he got bored with the geology business and discovered lower downtown Denver. Then he discovered politics, and the rest is history.

The pool was free, the house porter was delicious, and I was feeling mellow when I hit my car and found a goddarn parking ticket. I'm gonna challenge the mayor to a game of 9-ball, double or nothing, on the ticket. He knows I don't deserve it.

Did that, drank a couple of nice house porters (one on the house from the cool bartender, Louie) and hung out for a couple hours. Once again, no offers of a game, and none tendered. So for two days in a row, I've played on 9-footers, 8-footers and bar boxes. Truth be told, they're all the same. At least that's what I'm thinking tonight.

Played laterduring happy hour at my home tavern, where I broke even. And now I'm banging again in the basement, watching the Rox hammering their heads against the Astros wall.

I'd love to play some pool with you!!

How far are you from Colorado Springs??

I have family there that my wife and I visit once in a while.

May be a little down the road as we are off to Florida for a week end of June into July and then off to Missouri for a week to drop my daughter off for the start of her college career! We're heading from MO to new York to travel around for a few days then flying home.

Sounds like you had a nice relaxing day!!

Take care,

Russ......
