Alittle help needed

Hi guys a really good friend of mine just picked-up this cue.On the chance it may be something,he bought it based on the joint.I have my own idea of what it maybe but I really need some help to make sure.So I figured I'd ask the pros!:smile:I've never seen one like this.I know the pictures aren't the best.Any information at all would be a huge help.I do not have the cue but I will try to get more pictures if they'd help.Again thanks -JR

More information: It does not have a weight bolt.It's not the original bumper it's a flat face joint 14 thread implex joint I believe and its a full wrap less.

The joint does looks like an S series Schon to me, but I've seen other brands of older cues that have a similar look. I also wonder if this is an S1 with the buttcap missing.

Have you tried sending pictures to Evan Clarke? His e-mail is info@schoncues.com . That's what I would do. I would take some clear close up pics of the joint and include them. If it's an S series Schon, he might be willing to repair the butt, but ask nicely!

I'm going to have him send the pictures to Evan and hopefully get some info back.I do know that S1's didn't come with butt caps this is what has me guessing some on this cue.Thanks for all your help Chris!-JR

Several years ago, I had a Schon that reminded me of this cue in the fact that it just seemed to have several parts off of different Schon models. After a little research, I learned that sometimes prototypes would have several different features that might have simply never made it to a production model sometimes due to costs or the fact that certain features might not have been popular with their customers.

It looks like this cue has the body of an S1 without the usual rings in front of and behind the wrap area. The butt seems to be S1. The rings on the butt are typical S1 rings that all the rest of the series ended up having except for the S1.

The first thing I would key in on, would be the fact that the usual S1 rings for the rest of the series had a veneer on the side away from the joint, but no veneer next to the joint. The butt rings are spot on. The ring in the shaft doesn't seem to be the same at all. No veneer away from the joint, the dashes are completely different in size, looks and placement (almost directly centered in the shaft ring and off to the side on the butt ring). The joint looks to be S1.

My guess would be that it was an S1 prototype where they decided to change the rings to a simpler and more inexpensive style (probably because it was the low end of the S Line). Schon might have added the thin rings before and after the wrap area to add an inexpensive touch to make up for doing away with the "standard" rings. I think the shaft was probably a replacement shaft that was chosen later because it had rings that were close to the S1's (but not a real match).

All this is pure speculation, but I've talked with one of the employees at Schon during that time period quite a bit about the early happenings at Schon, and it would make sense for an educated guess.

I have seen this cue in person before. I think it came out of Doc's shop. I believe it to be a S1 with the wrong bumper on it. The S1 cues did not have a traditional butt cap like todays cues.
