so i was replying to JCIN's post over in one of the galveston threads where he advised me not to underestimate the ability of AZB to get things done for pool here in the US. i know they support tourneys, provide free streaming etc, but how else has AZ helped pool here in the US? i love AZ and am not trying to rip the community or be negative. i'm hoping that this will be a positive thread citing ways AZ has promoted the game here in the US, maybe ways that most may not even be aware of.

Off the top of my head:

The 2006 US Open Champion got staked to play the event on this forum after making a post looking for a backer.

The Derby City Classic founder Greg Sullivan looks here for opinions and suggestions about what people want to see in that event.

Fatboy put up $4000 for a 10 ball side event at this years Derby. Without this forum he probably would not have done that or numerous other things he has done to support the game and players for the simple fact of not having the means of communication to arrange them.

TAR and every match we have done (a few of which I feel will be talked about for a very long time) are a direct result of this forum.

I believe more high end cues are sold and traded here than anywhere else on earth.

The forum has provided a medium for collectors to show cues that otherwise would never have seen the light of day. I had never heard of Tikkler or his collection a few years ago. Thanks to AZ providing the forum and Steve for posting the pictures we all have the chance to see some amazing cues. He is just one example of the many here. Jimbo's forum is another place that cues see the light of day but an argument can be made that AZ is indirectly partly responsible for that. LOL

To me the most important thing about this place is the relationships it allows to form between members. Things happen when people get together and collaborate. I have met and become friends with people all over the world because of this place. Through those relationships some events were made possible that would not have happened otherwise.

I am sure many others can list more than that. This places has plenty of warts and enough BS to choke a horse at times but IMO it is a driving force in pool in the United States. The real power of this place is the people who never post but do read and act. I have seen it first hand.

Just to help get the ball rolling, here are some ways in which AZB helps --

1) For those who want to find out where the upcoming tournaments are on the regional scene in both men's and women's pool, AZB is second to none. The result is greater participation.

2) AZB allows the business men and women of our sport easy access to others involved in pool as players, sponsors, entrepreneurs, room proprietors, equipment makers and distributors, or fans. This allows them to bounce their ideas and plans off of an incredibly knowledgeable base of pool afficianados, which can only help them in their business decision making.

3) Fans gain access to each other. In March, a fellow poster had his roommate for the Super billiard Expo at Valley Forge back out at the last moment. I wanted to go, but couldn't get a hotel room. When he posted about it, I managed to get in touch with him and the happy result was that I was able to attend.

good job guys. pls keep the repsonses coming. thanks for chiming in JCIN as it was your post that got me thinking about this. maybe i have underestimated AZB's true value. i dont mind being proved wrong. i agree one of the great things is meeting pple, sometimes folks in your own back yard that you just wouldnt run into otherwise. i'm hoping to hear more about how AZB has helped the industry.

btw AZB may lead the way for the buying and selling of cues and that may be good for pool, it hasnt really helped my wallet that much...

brian==he is always the buyer

As far as getting things done, besides the examples previously mentioned, one can look at the participation in the AZ King section as a tremendous and entirely original success.

I've been a member not that long. Meet very good people as well as some shaddy ones. Bought lots of stuff here and sometimes gets scr*w*d a couple of times. Help out answer questions as much as I can and showcasing cuemakers/casemakers by giving reviews on their product.

Supported this site by being a Club Member when it was introduced and still continue to do so. It's all worth it. It's been a good journey overall.

Relationships.

VERY NICE THREAD, Brian!

RELATIONSHIPS.
AZBilliards' most important value to the pool community is the ability to connect people of like mind and spirit from all parts of the globe.

This has been and continues to be my greatest pleasure, meeting new people, discovering new perspectives and just seeing how the rest of the pool world lives, and what their perspectives are, not only as it relates to pool but their own personal lives.

I've met a lot of fine people through this medium and the Main Forum appears to have an unlimited supply of them.

I would say a "major" contribution by AZB to the pool world, is providing a venue where the "important" topic of whether old guys or young guys look weird / should be allowed to wear Hustlin' T-shirts. :p :D

Come on guys and gals, there are many more... :)

How about?

AZ Billiards enables individuals to easily obtain different global perspectives on pool subjects and more since this community is made up of individuals the world over.

Az

anything else?

How about AZ takes a normal pool player and makes them a complete neurotic about the game. Stance, Stroke, CTE, Hal, Ron, Custom, Production, Measel, red circle, blue circle, gamble, don't gamble, Diamond, Brunswick, Morri, Kamuii, old school, new school, cuetable, what should I do here, war stories, internet muscles, Paypal gambling, play by feel, use a system, APA, BCA, Amesterdam, Cases, Books, Gadgets, Avatar wars, Stickies, banned, not banned, NPR, not NPR and on and on.

When it's all said and done it's a blast.

I'm sure some of what I'm posting has been said in this thread (I don't have th e time to read it all) but...

Until something better comes along, AZB is the largest and best way for the Pool community to post semi-real time Pool info and communications. It reaches the largest cross section of everyone involved in Pool from promoters, to players both Pro and amateur, room owners, cue collectors, etc.

Pool is a subculture and does not have mainstream coverage i.e. T.V., radio. Without the Internet, and forums, then it would be impossible to have a collection of diehard Pool enthusiast's sharing thoughts, ideas and opinions.

I guess what I'm trying to say in a long winded way is that AZB isn't necessarily vital to Pool. The Internet and Pool forums is what is vital to Pool. AZB just happens to be the most popular vehicle at the moment.

The most important aspect of AZ to me is the people I have met and the friendships that have came from it. There are so many great people here that I have dealt with I can't begin to mention them all.

Sure, having access to tournament schedules and player info and the like is great but it is the people on the forum that makes AZ what it is, IMO.

You are so cute when you are sweet. Can I have a hug???

All that is true and wonderful.:p

Lets not forget that AZBilliards.com has become the world wide central HUB of information and news. Mike and Jerry treat this professional sport as such and in return they have the respect from so many with in it. :o
