A fun evening with Scott Lee and JoeyA

Scott Lee was passing through my area and contacted me mostly to meet and greet each other since we have never met other than on the net. Lessons weren't part of the plan but playing a little pool was a possibility, just a social evening. I started scheming, um laying plans, several days in advance. If this should turn into an evening's battle I needed an edge. First move, I fed him first. A full belly slows a person down and I figured all of his blood in his digestive system trying to break down a big wad of dead cow and a handful of shrimp should leave little blood for his brain to work with and give me a half-step on him!

As expected from our internet conversations, Scott is a very pleasant guy to be around and talk with. He kept my record intact. After two decades of first meeting people on the net I have yet to meet anyone that wasn't even better in person. The first few times I met somebody after talking to them on the net awhile I wondered if the person would be a real stinker in person. It has never happened and I'm starting to be pretty confident it never will. I can chalk up another great person first met VIA internet. With full belly and after a couple hours of pleasant conversation we were now ready to see what we could stir up. We passed by Rusty's which I think Greg, one of Scott's former student's, owns but Scott was curious about Buffalo's since JoeyA and I often have good things to say about that hall and the owner Buffalo. Diamond tables and a very well ran place, nothing not to like there.

Arriving at Buffalo's the first thing I see when slinking in the back door, oops using the rear entrance, is JoeyA! He is skulking in a high traffic area with pleasant scenery waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting victim. Well no, being our JoeyA he is waiting to play a gentlemanly game of billiards with someone of equal inclination. As soon as I saw Joey I made a beeline thataway and reintroduced Scott and Joey. They had met way back when but it had been years ago I believe. I knew things were going to get good in a hurry. Joey is very sharp and ever eager to learn from anyone; Scott despite me doing my best to not let this become a busman's holiday is hardwired down at a genetic level to teach. He loves it. The conversation and exchange of information was great. We eventually snagged a table and we did a little shooting purely to look at strokes and such. As suspected, Scott and I are pretty close to on the same page about how things should work although it doesn't always seem like it trying to communicate with purely the written word. We were all so busy talking no games were played. Just as well, while cleverly stuffing Scott with steak and shrimp I had overindulged a bit on fish and oysters!

A fun evening. Always a great time with JoeyA and a treat to have Scott in town. I'm looking forward to when he passes back this way again. A big thanks to JoeyA too, he covered the drinks and table time.

That sounds awesome. Thanks for sharing.

I've had similiar experiences of meeting AZ'rs. Are we all much nicer than our writing leaves others to believe?

Sorry things seem that way. I've meet over a dozen people face to face who know my from the AZ.

Text can come across the wrong way, but I do frequent other MBs, where verbal assaults are not only common but expected, and it can be fun when everyone is in on it. AZ is mild in this respect, if you will.

Scott and I have hooked up at least 3 times in the last 10+ years... twice while I lived in Cincinnati and at least once that I remember in Sacramento.

Every time is always a pleasure, food and table time, usually until the pool hall closes and then EATS.

Scott is one of the best 'story tellers' I have ever met in my 40+ years of playing this game.

I've never been together with Scott when we didn't have a good time. Lunch in Vegas, Dinner in Charlotte, Pool wherever, it's always fun and enlightening. Throw RandyG into the mix, and the hours melt away with all the pool stories getting passed around.
I'm glad to be able to call both of them my friends.

Joe,

That is a very good question. No doubt about it some people genuinely are. However the usual problem with the written word is it rarely conveys tone or expression. The reader almost can't avoid adding tone to a post. The problem is that the tone we add is affected by if the person is a friend, stranger, or someone we have had issues with in the past. Also, it depends on the mood we are in, what kind of a day we are having.

Good guys on the net have all been better, even super, in person. The real surprise is the people I have pegged as jerks or jackasses on the net. Often they are good folks face to face.

One of the most hilarious forums I was on was a benchrest forum. Folks have to be very anal to be successful benchrest shooters so arguments over anything or everything were frequent and sometimes personalities got involved. The guys would go at it hammer and tongs for weeks sometimes. The funny part would be that two guys were seemingly ready to meet and beat on Friday, spent all weekend next to each other at a big event talking and having a great time without ever a mention of their argument, then started back fighting on the forum on Monday without missing a beat! :D :D :D

For the record, most folks say I am exactly the same in person as on the net. Some see that as good . . .

Ha!

Where's Scott's input? I want Hu clocked! ;)

Nice story Hu. I look forward to meeting more of the crazy loons here, even Hu someday, maybe.

;)

(btw Joey, good luck in the Gem City)

Nobody clocked anybody. All three of us are far too savvy to be clocked without serious money on the line.

I went in a place I wasn't known awhile back and the room detective tried to clock me for free. Ain't gonna happen! For free I'm a banger.

Sly ole fox makes for a fun hunt!

Or a bad trap...

Lafayette, louisiana

Hu,
It was nice seeing you again and Scott as well. I was amazed at how the two of you chattered the whole night. It was as if you had known each other for years. I was happy to be the fly on the wall. (It's better than being in the ointment :-) )

Scott promised to pass back through New Orleans on his way home to work with me on some things. I had to put it in text because then I can hold it over his head when he "forgets" about me and rushes home.

Scott is headed west this morning to give some pool lessons in Lafayette, Louisiana, in case anyone is looking to make good use of his whereabouts.

I remember a member of AZ Billiards asking me about some pool lessons from that area but we never hooked up. If he is still looking for lessons and reading this thread, I heard some very positive things from Scott while listening to the two of them talk for HOURS. (and if thought I could talk) :D

Hah!

Joey did manage to sneak in a word, or three or four in edgeways! :D :D :D

He better not forget about me on Saturday! :D:D

I'm in for all day lesson at Bill Schick's place. He'll probably have me doing wind sprints around the table to get me in-shape.

The most common reaction for me:

"Oh YOU"RE BVal?" :D:D:D:D

BVal

LOL... mine is always... "you look so much younger than I imagined."

Hu,

It sound as if you, Scott, and Joey had a great time. Scott was here in Florida a few months ago and stopped by to see us here in Orlando - 2 pots of coffee later it was 1AM... its always great to see Scott! If anybody has the opportunity to get lessons from Scott Lee, he is simply one of the best, so please take advantage of it!

That's real nice. Not only Lafayette but Shreveport, LA too.

That's all right, enjoy your lessons. I needed an excuse in case I play poorly in Atlanta this weekend. :D
