Never thought of that....
...but you're right. If some of these cues could talk...The stories and acquired order on some of my cues, and I'm sure many others on this site, are interesting. I'll mention a couple...The Meucci, my first cue which I stared at in the display case at Chris's in Chicago around 20 years ago when I was 18, playing in every weekly 9 ball tourney I could scrape up the entry for. I put down 20 bucks and they held it for me until I could pay it off, took me probably 3 months ($130?). That cue was eventually sold to my buddie, from whom I borrowed it from on a league night. That night we out of hand from one too many miller lite's, I did my best luke skywalker impression after our team won, swinging it like a light saber, and the hourglass taper on that cue had finally had enough, it snapped in two and flew across the room! Well, I had Ed Young build me another shaft for my buddies Meucci a short time later. Then...somehow I got the cue collecting bug...few years later, after I had a modest collection, I felt the need to have my very first cue back. $150 took care of that.
The Rambow...About 4-5 years ago, I helped out a buddie of mine move a bunch of furniture to his girlfriends place, in the pouring rain. He has a huge garage here in the city where we eventually ended up in. After he thanked me for helping him, he asked about compensation, which I declined.
After looking around his garage which we could barely move around in due to his hoarding every thing he's ever came in contact with in his life, I jokingly asked him if he had any old cues in his garage. He rifled around, climbing over stuff and produced a handful of old, cheap, taiwan cues, worthless...then he said, "wait, there's an old case around here somewhere", moments later he found an old dusty vinyl case. I unzipped it open, pulled out the 2 shafts first, and my heart skipped, buckhorn ferrules, then pulled out the butt, saw the butt end, and nearly sharted myself. I told him, "I think we have a problem, this could be a Rambow"..."What's a Rambow?", now I could've played it off like it wasn't anything valuable, but he's a good friend, and I believe in honesty (most of the time!). I told him it would have to be authenticated, but it could be worth decent money. He never flinched, and told me.."if you never would have asked, I wouldn't have ever known, and it probably would have been thrown out...keep it, it's your's"....unreal....months later, Deano Andrews met up with me one night, examined it, played with it, and said, "congratulations, you've got a Rambow"...
I've got more stories, but I don't want to write a novel, and after I read the last response to my thread, it conjured up the memories of some of these cues, and I felt the need to write about at least these two. I don't think there's a permanent thread about "interesting cue acquisitions" or "if this cue could talk", but I think it wouldn't be the worst idea, and probably some fun reads!
Thanks for your nice comments on some of my cues, I'm late for work!
