African blackwood...black boar... Player

actually he has started selling them on cues he has recently finished with a "try it and if you insist I'll add a ferrule" approach

I meant the whole "minimum parts" cue. I think he wasn't comfortable with it due to the shaft not having a phenolic collar where the butt screwed in. You're right though, he is selling ferrule-less shafts.

Found the link to the minimum cue: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=142147

Here's one of his without a ferrule: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=143750

I think that Mason's non-capped thin walled micarta ferrule tries and achieves a reasonable amount of protection, with all the gain possible from just "slapping a tip on the end of the shaft. "
exactly . . . you have a whole continuum between a shaft with a standard ferrule, and a shaft without . . .
vary the length, and thickness of the wall, to come up with a ferrule offering a more direct hit, while still offering some protection to the shaft for durability.

no ferrule

someone on azb brought the whole no ferrule thing to my attention about a year ago.
i'm always into try this, it might work
i played without a ferrule for a while and decided that i liked the hit better. i've sold about 1/2 dozen cues without the ferrule and have not had one returned, so i think the customers also like the hit.
i will continue building shafts without ferrules simply because i like the way the cue feels.

I have a feeling that were going to see a lot of shafts with no ferrels pop up in the next year, it will be a treand or fad, or perhaps a new standard in cue making. I like new ideas that work, not gimmicks. this is exciting to me. Eric Crisp and talked about it some too, when he came to Vegas with his family-we sure had a great time. anyways back to the topic, no ferrels sounds cool to me, i'm looking foward to trying it on a couple different cues.

hey

There may be more cuemakers doing the ferrulless shafts, but I am curious as to how they are going about it. What are they doling different....as in its not just a shaft minus the ferrull and glue on a tip...or is it

I know that Tonys are much more complicated than that. Does anyone know exactly how some of these guys are building these???

I just got mine today, and I have to laugh at all the negative comments on these cues in the earlier posts. I would post a picture but I think not. This one is a little over the top. It is definitly my new player.

im the odd man out but I didnt care for the hit of this cue as much as a regular BB. I play with a BB most of the time(or a Gus that plays very similar) so I have a good understanding here.

Tony put alot of engeneering and time into devloping this cue, and yes its makes a few shots you would never think of shooting seem like hangers. It was truely amazing on certain shots. This cue is a big step fowards in cue devlopment.

Everyone here arguing about the price is missing the whole point, this cue is a prototype for a new generation of cues, and prototypes cost big $$$, Tony wasnt looking for a quick payday-he has pleanty of biz and isnt a $$$ kinda guy anyways. He is in persuit of taking less than perfect materials and making them perfect-no 2 pieces of wood are the same.

Most people love this cue that have been lucky enough to play with it. I played a couple sessions perhaps 4 hours with it and like I just said you can do some amazing things with it, inside english shots are much easier, there is almost no deflection. The cue goes through the ball(something the Mark Tad likes) better than most cues I have ever hit a ball with.

The reason I like my BB better than this cue is this cue is a bit front heavy with the steel joint and black wood, And the way the shaft is designed the shaft infront of my bridge is very light(reduced front end mass). So the whole weight distrubutiuon thing wasnt working for me-but thats just me. The quality of the cue is amazing, the percision of everything is the best there is. I could get used to it I suppose, but I didnt think it would bring the best out of me, my current Black boar and a Gus that was built for Ray Martin do. So I passed. However if anyone is luckey enough to play with the BB players cue is in for a treat.
